Panerai Luminor Otto Giorni Destro (PAM1655): a revelation

I have to admit: for a long time, Panerai never really appealed to me. Like many, I found their models too imposing, almost caricatured. But in hindsight, this judgment was based mainly on a very “digital” experience, looking at photos alone behind a screen. Everything changed the day I went to a store. Initially, I was leaning towards a 40mm Radiomir, thinking it was the most reasonable size for me. Then I let the idea simmer, I tried on other models, took my time. And that's when I came across this PAM1655 Destro. This model ticks many boxes, but what really surprised me is the balance it offers. On paper, 44mm is still 44mm. But the crown on the left radically changes the perception on the wrist. The watch sits differently, almost disappears, and precisely breaks the impression of bulk I was dreading. Added to this is an 8-day power reserve, which is a real luxury when you regularly alternate between several watches. No need to worry, it's always ready. As a result, I don't take it off for weeks! I had also been warned about another "Panerai effect": the constant urge to change the strap. And it's absolutely true, even if it's hard to explain. However, I was a little disappointed by the straps offered by the brand. So I turned to a custom strap maker… and that's when everything took on a whole new dimension. The possibilities become endless. Depending on the strap, the watch can either fully embrace its substantial character or, on the contrary, appear much more understated. This allows it to be adapted to different situations, but also to rediscover the watch with each change. In short, Panerai and I have a story that's just beginning. And I have a feeling this is only the start.
