My journey with Cartier began in 2023 with this limited edition Santos Dumont. I've always loved the Santos' style, especially its shape that perfectly hugs the wrist. However, something held me back; I think it was mainly the lack of robustness. But as my collection grew, I became more interested in models I wouldn't wear every day. And that's certainly the case with this Dumont, which I wear only very rarely, but which makes a statement every time I do. The only drawback with Cartier is the lack of an anti-reflective coating. It's a shame when you offer such beautiful dials.

My story with Zenith began thanks to a friend who owns a Chronomaster Open. My interest in the brand had been limited until then. After doing some research beyond the well-known fact that "Zenith supplied the Daytona for years," I realized the horological legend I'd been missing. So I went to my authorized dealer several times to try them on, and although I'm not usually drawn to white dials, this one instinctively caught my eye. I should also add that my wife, who was with me at the time, even said, "I think it's more beautiful than the Daytona" (referring to the colored subdials). I'll always remember that moment.

And so, a week later, I decided to buy it, and it has since become the watch I wear most often.

The only reason it doesn't get a 5/5 rating is its price, which is, I must say, exorbitant. However, I believe that no brand I am interested in would get 5/5 for value for money today, as inflation has become so outrageous.

The story begins a long time ago. My father received a classic Reverso from my mother for his 50th birthday (25 years ago). I think that my love for watches began at that moment. Although I now have a well-stocked collection, the Reverso has always remained present but distant, perhaps I was aware of the fact that I would rarely wear it. But after giving one to my wife for the birth of our daughter, I started to take an interest in the model again. But there are so many... The choice would certainly have been more difficult if I had not attended a masterclass on watchmaking at the famous Jaeger boutique on Place Vendôme in Paris during which I fell in love with this duoface model with moon phase. It was a few years ago now, but when I had the opportunity to get my hands on this model, I jumped at the chance. It is too recent for my opinion to be final, however I remain captivated by the level of details and finishes that undoubtedly make it a watch for "big boys" to "Frenchify" the Anglo-Saxon expression. Of course, the moon phase is not the most useful complication nor is it used the most, but what a pleasure for the eyes, especially when there are 2 in the same watch. A detail that has its importance: the different sets of bracelets provided with the watch. I think that is what I particularly like in current fashion trends: we allow ourselves to wear it whenever we want, when we want, even a Reverso so dressed with jeans and a t-shirt. This approach speaks to me a lot.

Watchmaking is a very strange passion sometimes. We all know it, we think we are satisfied when we buy our first watch by saying to ourselves "that's it, I have the watch of my dreams, it will calm me down for a while". And then a few months later - or year(s) for the most patient - we say to ourselves "having a collection requires eclecticism, so why not this one?". And then we find ourselves buying a new watch as soon as the opportunity arises or finances allow it. For me Glashütte Original has always been synonymous with prestige. But, I think it took me a while to really get interested in their models due to the lack of an official store. Far from being a criticism, this allows watch lovers to have access to a fabulous brand that does not pay for pharaonic marketing campaigns. Swatch Group certainly, but with the DNA of a high-precision watchmaker and specifications worthy of a 100% independent store. The only problem is that the model I like the most is no longer in the catalog. So I turned to Chrono24 (for the first time) to find the model of my dreams: the Senator Hand Date with matte black dial. A little apprehension when buying, but once I received the watch, I must say that it is probably one of those that had the most effect on me. Refined, elegant, with a sporty chic side, for me it is a watch that can be worn in all contexts, an essential criterion. The little detail that made me fall in love? The subtlety of the reverse date sub-dial. My purchase was therefore above all influenced by the emotion that the design of the watch gave me, the DNA and authenticity of the brand, and the level of details for a price that defies all competition (even Grand Seiko...). Only one problem: the addiction to Glashütte Original begins, and it seems impossible to stop.

Not much to say really. This watch ticks all the boxes and it would certainly be the one I would keep if there was only one left. It can be worn in all contexts depending on its strap, which I particularly appreciate. Historic, comfortable, sporty but classic, in short: legendary. The chronograph that every collector must have. Nothing more to add dear aficionados!

Cartier Santos-Dumont large model. Quartz movement and it suits it well since I don't wear it every day. The dial is beautiful, the level of finish is also very good and the bracelet is very high quality with a pin buckle. It goes just as well with a suit as with more casual outfits, even a t-shirt or polo shirt. It is discreet but attracts a lot of compliments. It is an ideal watch to celebrate a life event as are all Cartier watches!

The all-terrain elegance of Cartier

Accustomed to round sports watches with black backgrounds, this Cartier breaks my usual codes: square shape, white background, Roman numerals... it is a watch of incredible elegance, moreover it is unclassifiable. Cartier is a real watch manufacturer and this idea takes on its full meaning when you put it on your wrist.

What can I say about this model, a total success. The Santos Dumont is an iconic watch, with all the Cartier codes, the secret signature, the sword hands, the railway minute track…

Two hands, extra flat, a sublime leather strap, it is the elegant watch to have in a collection. In my opinion, in the Santos range, it is the most refined, the one that stands out among the very pretty dress watches.

This watch can mean different things to different people, but to me it embodies an immense history enclosed in a magnificently proportioned case.

It is indeed a watch originally created for the aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, who made the first successful flight in an airplane in 1906. At the pilot's request, his friend Louis Cartier is said to have presented him in 1904 with a watch designed to be worn on the wrist, allowing him to time his flights without having to let go of the controls to manipulate a pocket watch. I find it fascinating that the alliance between these two pioneers, Louis Cartier and Alberto Santos-Dumont, not only revolutionized the way watches are worn today, but also pioneered the concept of the tool watch. The choice of gold for a tool watch may seem paradoxical, but what other choice could there be to accompany an aristocrat, a member of the Parisian elite of the early 20th century, on his aerial adventures? Probably my favorite detail on this watch.

But the story behind this watch is also emotional to me. After breaking many records and contributing significantly to the developments of aviation, Alberto Santos-Dumont spent decades campaigning tirelessly against the use of airplanes as weapons of war, particularly upset by their role in World War I. He considered the airplane to be partly his invention and its use in the world wars tormented him until the end of his life. His famous statement, “I never thought that my creation could allow brothers to kill brothers”. Certainly a man I find remarkable, whose destiny seems to me very linked to that of Oppenheimer and who in my humble opinion should be highlighted by Cartier to promote their eponymous watch.

As for the design, this 1575 pre-CPCP faithfully reflects the original design, right down to the screws on the bezel, designed to recall the structure of the Eiffel Tower. This case embodies for me the height of the artistic effervescence of the Belle Époque and it is the first incarnation of the so emblematic design of Cartier that I particularly admire. Moreover, although the current design of the Santos and Santos-Dumont is different, they symbolize, like the original SD, the evolution of lifestyles, in particular the possibility of wearing them with a metal bracelet. This watch is exceptionally long-lasting.

The movement of this 1575 is just as historic since it is the F. Piguet caliber 21, which held the record for the thinnest manual movement for 21 years. Its longevity is just as remarkable as the design of the Santos-Dumont since it was produced from 1925 until the 2000s. I am a fan of two or three hands, and an ultra-thin movement represents for me one of the most beautiful complications a watch can have. While the design may be striking, it is extremely discreet in its size and exceptional thinness. It fits my wrist perfectly, becoming one with me. I also appreciate the fact that it leaves enough space for the bracelet, showing off a beautiful leather strap. Everything I love...

While I am not an aviation enthusiast, this watch has as much historical significance to me as a Speedmaster. It is a bastion of history, utility and design with a presence that cannot be ignored.
