Glycine is a Swiss watchmaking company founded in 1914 in Biel by watchmaker-engineer Eugène Meylan. Initially known for its women's watches and small calibers, the brand later established itself with utilitarian watches, including the Glycine Airman (1953), which became a benchmark for pilots and travelers. Today, Glycine remains based in Switzerland and caters to fans of legible and robust "Tool Watches" with a reasonable price positioning.
Born at the request of airline pilots, the Airman introduced a 24-hour dial and a 24-position bezel to read two time zones at a glance—a language that would become its signature. The watch accompanied civilian and military aviators, and even traveled into space on the wrist of astronaut Pete Conrad during Gemini 5 (1965). Reissued multiple times (Airman No. 1, DC-4, etc.), it remains the “Aviation/GMT” pillar of the brand.
Alongside the Airman, Glycine developed the Combat family in the late 1960s, including the Glycine Combat Sub, a slim and versatile diver's watch (20-30 ATM depending on the version) which has earned a solid reputation for its portability and excellent Specifications/Price ratio. The collection combines simple codes (steel cases, K1 mineral or sapphire crystals, contrasting indexes) with controlled dimensions, for everyday use without unnecessary complications.
After several decades in the family, Glycine passed through different hands (Altus Uhren Holding, then DKSH). In 2016, the brand was acquired by Invicta, with a public commitment to preserving Glycine's identity and focusing the offering on the flagship Airman and Combat lines. Headquarters and assembly remain in Switzerland.
The Glycine Combat Sub is mainly powered by the GL224 caliber (based on Sellita SW200-1, ex-ETA 2824), a widespread and easy-to-maintain “3 hands + Date” automatic. On the Airman (GMT) side, Glycine uses the GL293, historically based on ETA 2893-2 and now often on Sellita SW330-1/-2, depending on series and availability. These choices power proven configurations (frequent sapphire crystal, 20-30 ATM water resistance on divers, 24-hour dials and bidirectional/locked bezels on the Airman).
Glycine's DNA lies in its clear interpretation, real utility, and respect for its icons: Airman for aviation and travelers, Combat for the sea and everyday life. The brand prioritizes technical consistency and practical value over luxurious overkill, which explains its loyal community and regular reissues of its historic models.
Glycine embodies a pragmatic Swiss approach: watches born from concrete needs (piloting, traveling, diving), with functional aesthetics and well-chosen specifications. If you're hesitating between an Airman or a Combat, rely on real-life feedback: prioritize the authenticity of Dialicious customer reviews to choose the Glycine model that best suits your needs.
