The Direnzo DRZ 06 Wandering Star, launched in 2024, is a Swiss manually wound mechanical watch designed by Sergio Godoy Di Renzo around an unusual principle: turning the small seconds into an almost theatrical element without making basic time reading more complicated. Its sandwich dial contains a moving disc at 6 o’clock from which only a red dot remains visible, creating the impression of a “wandering star” floating around the centre of the small-seconds display. The construction revives the idea of mystery displays used on certain older watches, but Direnzo adds a Super-LumiNova base that completely changes the effect as ambient light decreases.
The DRZ 06 simultaneously retains several characteristic Direnzo features: a bowl-shaped dial, retro-futuristic automotive inspiration, a case with complex surfaces and comparatively restrained dimensions. Its 316L stainless-steel case measures 38 mm by 46 mm lug to lug and 10.8 mm thick, is water-resistant to 100 metres and houses a manually wound Sellita SW216-1 Elaboré.
The personality of the DRZ 06 immediately rests on its dial. Direnzo uses a sandwich construction: an openworked upper layer reveals sections of a lower layer coated with luminous material. The hour markers are deliberately simple and several radial openings emphasise the depth created by the curved dial. At 6 o’clock, the small seconds does not use a traditional hand. A disc rotates beneath the opening and moves a red dot around an almost invisible central axis, creating the impression that the dot travels independently. The “Wandering Star” small seconds forms the fundamental distinguishing feature of the DRZ 06. In darkness, the BGW9 Super-LumiNova base further strengthens the illusion because the area beneath the disc glows while the red dot remains visually separated from the mechanism that drives it.
The dial also has a highly distinctive concave shape. Direnzo had already introduced this principle on the DRZ 02 in 2018 as a way of creating continuity between the dial surface and the case. Instead of a simple flat disc, the component is machined into a bowl-like shape whose different levels naturally guide the eye towards the centre. On the DRZ 06, the sunburst fumé finish further accentuates this effect by changing colour between the centre and the outer edge. The bowl-shaped dial gives the watch substantially more depth than its 10.8 mm thickness might suggest. Blue and green versions display the gradient particularly clearly, while black is more restrained and the red version introduced in 2025 gives the watch a considerably stronger presence.
The hour and minute hands are broad enough to remain easy to distinguish above an already elaborate dial. They use the same white BGW9 Super-LumiNova as the luminous areas of the sandwich construction and appear bluish in darkness. There is no date window, a decision that avoids disturbing the composition and also allows Direnzo to use a crown without a ghost position linked to an unused complication. The lack of a date strengthens symmetry and allows the small seconds to remain the only visual animation on the dial. The layout therefore remains easy to read despite its originality: hours and minutes are immediately understandable while the seconds indication is intentionally more playful than suitable for precise fractional timing.
The case is manufactured from 316L stainless steel and receives a coating stated at 800 HV to improve resistance to superficial scratching. A width of 38 mm may suggest a small watch on paper, but the almost square middle case, broad circular bezel and 46 mm length significantly increase the area it occupies on the wrist. Its flanks contain several recesses and changes of plane that create different reflections according to viewing angle. The DRZ 06 wears visually more like a compact sports watch than a conventional round 38 mm dress watch. Its 10.8 mm thickness including the crystal remains very restrained and benefits directly from the absence of an automatic winding rotor.
The front crystal is flat sapphire with anti-reflective treatment, while the screwed caseback also contains sapphire through which the calibre can be viewed. The crown does not screw down, but the watch is nevertheless rated to 10 ATM, or 100 metres. This makes relaxed everyday use possible, including rain and occasional swimming provided water resistance is properly maintained. The 100-metre rating makes the DRZ 06 considerably more versatile than a simple neo-vintage mechanical dress watch. It nevertheless has no dive bezel, screw-down crown or architecture specifically developed for diving; its role remains that of a city sports watch capable of tolerating water rather than an underwater instrument.
Direnzo offers the model on stainless steel or vegetable-tanned leather made in Germany. The steel bracelet uses articulated links and receives the same 800 HV hardening treatment as the case. Half links are supplied to facilitate sizing, and Direnzo also offers an alternative folding clasp with several micro-adjustment positions in addition to the butterfly clasp. The steel bracelet naturally extends the volumes of the case and gives the watch its most coherent overall appearance. Its 20 mm width and quick-release spring bars nevertheless make switching to leather or the brand’s FKM rubber option straightforward. With all steel links installed, the watch weighs approximately 150 grams.
The leather strap significantly changes the perception of the DRZ 06. Black and light-brown versions use vegetable-tanned leather and quick-release bars. They reduce wrist weight and make the unusual shape of the case more visible, but naturally interrupt the visual continuity provided by the metal end links. Leather better suits someone wanting to emphasise the mechanical and retro-futuristic character rather than the sporting side of the watch. Separately available FKM rubber forms a third option better suited to heat and water. Thanks to the conventional 20 mm attachment, the owner is not locked into a proprietary bracelet system and can easily experiment with other straps.
The DRZ 06 uses the Sellita SW216-1 in Elaboré grade with an Incabloc shock-protection system. This manually wound Swiss calibre belongs to the same broad technical family as the automatic SW200 but removes the oscillating weight and automatic winding mechanism. It operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour, or 4 Hz, and Direnzo states approximately 38 hours of power reserve. The use of a manual movement directly contributes to the experience intended for the DRZ 06. It requires the owner to return regularly to the crown to restore energy to the watch and therefore creates a more active relationship than an automatic movement kept continuously on a winder or worn every day.
The absence of a rotor also reduces thickness and reveals more of the movement through the sapphire caseback. Production watches receive decoration including Geneva stripes and Direnzo branding, whereas certain early prototypes shown in initial reviews were visually simpler. The SW216-1 powers hours, minutes and small seconds without a date in this configuration. Removing the calendar avoids an unnecessary crown position and perfectly matches the no-date dial. This mechanical simplicity also facilitates servicing compared with a more exotic complication: the mystery effect of the small seconds comes primarily from the display on the dial side while the underlying calibre remains a Swiss movement widely understood by watchmakers.
The small seconds at 6 o’clock nevertheless provides the clearest demonstration of the work carried out around the movement. Instead of fitting a conventional hand to the axis, Direnzo uses a disc that moves the red dot around the opening. This solution hides the mechanical connection and produces the intended impression of a floating component. The visual complication remains simple to use while completely transforming the way the wearer observes the passing seconds. It is not a complication intended to measure intervals with chronograph-like precision; its appeal lies more in the permanent animation of the dial and the contrast between a traditional manually wound mechanism and an intentionally unexpected display.
(2018) Direnzo DRZ 02 Precursor of the Bowl-Shaped Dial:
The DRZ 02 does not directly belong to the DRZ 06 family, but it is its most important aesthetic ancestor. The Direnzo DRZ 02 reference not communicated introduces in 2018 the concave dial that Sergio Godoy Di Renzo describes as a way of creating continuity between dial and case. Its stainless-steel case measures 41 mm by 48 mm lug to lug and 11.5 mm thick. The crystal is sapphire, water resistance reaches 50 metres and the movement is an automatic Sellita SW200-1. Several date and no-date versions are offered. The dial requires more complex CNC machining than a conventional flat disc and already produces the sense of depth that will become characteristic of future Direnzo watches. Six years later, the DRZ 06 returns to this principle in a smaller case with manual winding, doubled water resistance and its mystery small-seconds display.
(2024) Direnzo DRZ 06 Blue Blue, White and Red Contrast:
The blue version is one of the three colours offered when commercial launch begins in February 2024. The Direnzo DRZ 06 DRZ_06_BLUE has a 38 mm 316L stainless-steel case measuring 46 mm in length and 10.8 mm thick with an 800 HV hardened coating. Its flat sapphire crystal is anti-reflective, the caseback screws down with a sapphire window and water resistance reaches 100 metres. The blue sandwich dial has radial brushing with a fumé effect becoming darker towards the outside, openings revealing white BGW9 Super-LumiNova and the red-dot mystery small seconds near 6 o’clock. The manually wound Sellita SW216-1 Elaboré operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides approximately 38 hours of reserve according to Direnzo. Steel bracelet and leather strap options are available while the crown remains non-screw-down. The combination of blue, white and red makes this the most immediately graphic of the three launch colours.
(2024) Direnzo DRZ 06 Black Most Restrained Interpretation:
The black variation retains the complete technical construction of the DRZ 06 while significantly reducing the visual impact of its dial layers in daylight. The Direnzo DRZ 06 reference not communicated uses the same 800 HV hardened 316L stainless steel, 38 mm diameter, 46 mm length, 10.8 mm thickness, flat anti-reflective sapphire and transparent screwed caseback. Water resistance remains 10 ATM. Its fumé black dial retains the sandwich architecture and openings visually filled by BGW9 Super-LumiNova, while the red small-seconds dot provides the principal touch of colour. The Sellita SW216-1 Elaboré with Incabloc operates at 4 Hz and is wound exclusively through the crown. This version works especially well on black leather or steel and represents the most restrained choice for someone who appreciates the concept but wants the colour effect to remain limited.
(2024) Direnzo DRZ 06 Green More Organic Fumé Dial:
The third launch execution adopts a green tone that strongly highlights the transition from a brighter centre to a darker outer edge. The Direnzo DRZ 06 DRZ_06_GREEN retains the 38 x 46 mm 316L case, 10.8 mm thickness, 800 HV coating, anti-reflective sapphire and 100 metres of water resistance. Its sandwich dial remains date-free and uses the same BGW9 Super-LumiNova beneath the openings and on the hands. At 6 o’clock, the red “Wandering Star” dot rotates on its disc and appears particularly distinct against the fumé green surface. The manually wound Sellita SW216-1 Elaboré has Incabloc protection, operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides approximately 38 hours of reserve. Steel bracelet with half links, German leather or FKM rubber allow the watch to move between city use, a dressier appearance and everyday situations involving more moisture.
(2025) Direnzo DRZ 06 Red New Colour and GPHG Selection:
The red colour joins the family after the original three shades and becomes the most widely noticed DRZ 06 variation in 2025. The Direnzo DRZ 06 DRZ06_RED retains exactly the 38 mm platform, 46 mm length and 10.8 mm thickness, with 800 HV-treated 316L stainless steel, flat anti-reflective sapphire, transparent screwed caseback and 100 metres of water resistance. Its red dial repeats the radial brushing, sandwich construction, luminous components and mystery small seconds. The Elaboré-grade Sellita SW216-1 remains manually wound, with Incabloc and a 4 Hz frequency. This execution is selected for the 2025 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, giving the DRZ 06 unusual visibility for a young independent brand positioned well below the price of major Swiss manufacturers. Red strongly reinforces the automotive inspiration and makes the moving dot feel more integrated with the complete dial.
The first choice concerns colour because the mechanical specifications remain practically identical. Black is the most discreet and works easily with everyday clothing. Blue provides the strongest immediately recognisable contrast between dial, luminous material and red dot. Green feels warmer and changes substantially with light, while the 2025 red has the most assertive personality. Blue is probably the best choice for someone wanting to enjoy the full graphic character of the DRZ 06. Black better suits someone who wants the originality to remain concentrated around the small seconds.
Manual winding should be considered before purchase. Approximately 38 hours of autonomy means that an owner wanting to wear the watch every day will generally need to wind it daily or almost daily. This gesture can become either a pleasure or an inconvenience depending on habits. The DRZ 06 particularly suits someone who appreciates regular interaction with a mechanical watch. For a wearer who simply wants to pick up a watch in the morning without considering its power reserve, an automatic Direnzo such as the DRZ 02R will be more practical.
The steel bracelet gives the watch its most visually complete presentation. It extends the lines of the case, receives a hardened coating and includes half links that make adjustment easier. The butterfly clasp is elegant but does not offer on-the-fly adjustment; the alternative folding clasp with micro-adjustment positions can therefore be useful for a wrist that changes size throughout the day. The alternative clasp is the more functional choice when precise comfort matters more than the visual continuity of the butterfly design. Leather is lighter and FKM rubber more coherent for summer or frequent contact with water.
The 38 mm figure should not be interpreted like that of a conventional small round watch. Its almost square middle case, broad bezel and 46 mm length create greater presence. The restrained height nevertheless prevents excessive bulk and the curved lugs bring the bracelet closer to the wrist. The DRZ 06 is particularly interesting for someone wanting presence close to a 39 or 40 mm watch while retaining a nominal 38 mm diameter. On smaller wrists, its restrained vertical dimensions remain reassuring; on a broader wrist, the case geometry partly compensates for the moderate diameter.
Finally, a pre-owned DRZ 06 deserves several straightforward checks: consistent operation of the small seconds, winding without unusual resistance, correct crown behaviour, condition of the hardened coating and no visible moisture beneath the sapphire caseback. The 100-metre rating should be verified if the watch will genuinely be used in water. A recent water-resistance test remains preferable before swimming with an example that has already been worn for several years. The presence of the original bracelet, half links and additional clasp can also have genuine practical value. Other customers’ opinions are essential.
The Direnzo DRZ 06 Wandering Star is aimed at enthusiasts wanting a distinctive Swiss mechanical watch without moving into a complication that is difficult to use every day. Its 38 mm case, concave dial and mystery small seconds give it an immediately recognisable identity, while the Sellita SW216-1 retains comparatively conventional and serviceable mechanics. Blue, black and green form the original 2024 launch range, while the later red version adds a stronger expression and the visibility of a 2025 GPHG selection. The steel bracelet best highlights the continuity of the design, while leather and rubber can make the watch lighter or more sporting. The principal choice ultimately lies in accepting regular manual winding in exchange for a slimmer watch and a more direct relationship with its mechanics.
To compare comfort, accuracy, ageing of the hardened finish and the real appeal of the small-seconds display through extended ownership, Dialicious customer reviews provide a particularly useful complement.
