My review of the SERICA 5303 PLD

I just received my SERICA 5303 PLD, and it's a truly wonderful surprise. A genuine French diver's watch, born from a collaboration between SERICA and the French Navy's mine clearance divers, hence the acronym PLD ("Plongeurs de la Défense," or "Defense Divers"). This model was designed with them, for them, and it shows: every detail exudes functionality and robustness.

SERICA is a young French brand, founded in Paris in 2019, that is reviving the spirit of classic "tool watches": simple, reliable, timeless, and elegant. I really appreciate this philosophy: focusing on the essentials, with a genuine commitment to quality, but without the exorbitant prices of major brands.

This 5303 PLD is a real gem. Its 39mm case is perfectly proportioned, yet it feels even more compact on the wrist, making it incredibly comfortable. The ceramic bezel is superb, with its subtle magnetic feel and crisp click. The Milanese bracelet gives it a chic and versatile style, but I also wear it on a blue elastic strap, which lends it a sportier, more casual look.

I wasn't particularly used to this type of watch in my collection, but what really convinced me was the personal interaction. The Black Bay 54 is the most representative example of the first TUDOR diver's watch, the reference 7922. The 37 mm case retains the same proportions as before, while benefiting from the TUDOR Manufacture Calibre MT5400 and water resistance to 200 m, technical feats.

HISTORICAL PROPORTIONS AND TECHNICAL PROWESS

The Black Bay 54 model is the model closest, aesthetically speaking, to the first TUDOR diver's watch, the reference 7922. Offered with a 37 mm case, it retains the general proportions of its source of inspiration while being equipped with the high-performance Manufacture Calibre MT5400 and water resistance to 200 m. A characteristic element and faithful to the aesthetics of the period, the unidirectional bezel does not have a minute graduation. However, the aesthetic details do not stop at the dimensions of the case and the bezel. The seconds hand, with its round luminous disc, evokes the appearance of the hand of the original model. The ergonomics have also evolved with a redesigned crown and bezel, but which nevertheless retain the historical spirit.

A DIVE INTO THE PAST

The spirit of Black Bay is part of the history of the brand. The Black Bay line has always highlighted iconic elements of old TUDOR diver’s watches, but the Black Bay 54 is perhaps the closest model to a specific historical piece created to date. The Oyster Prince Submariner reference 7922, one of the first modern diver’s watches, is a great source of inspiration since it is known to have been evaluated and then adopted by the French and American Navies as well as widely used by the pioneers of professional diving. The first versions of the reference 7922 featured a “small crown”, but not yet the red triangle at 12 o’clock, which would later become one of the brand’s signatures. These details gave it a refined and understated aesthetic. The Black Bay 54 is faithful to its model and takes up a large number of distinctive details. The minute hand, for example, in addition to adjusted proportions, is beveled at its base, as on the 1954 model. The second hand is as close as can be to the original. The profile of the bezel ring is also faithful to that of the reference 7922, as are the markings on its aluminum insert. The Black Bay 54 also features resolutely modern touches, such as a satin-sun dial and a “T-fit” clasp for a perfect fit and, of course, the Manufacture Caliber MT5400, a concentrate of high-performance watchmaking technology.

I had wanted a Tudor for a few years and Monfils fils went to the antipodes on the day of the presentation of the BB58 GMT…for an enthusiast like me the excuse was too good 😂. Everything works with this watch, thinner than the old one, a perfect diameter for me and a recognized quality.

The world is vast

This new GMT from Tudor is a great success. Indeed, it is much less thick than the other models of the brand making it more harmonious. Still on the design side, vintage lovers will be seduced by perfectly balanced warm colors. Those having some reservations about the too pronounced gold side, go and discover the watch at a watchmaker, you will see that it is perfectly balanced on this point. The watch is also equipped with the T-fit bracelet which allows an adaptive adjustment according to the heat which is very appreciable. 

The only point of improvement could be the fact of adding a cyclops on the date in order to be able to facilitate the reading of the latter.

The best GMT from Tudor

This Tudor is the latest addition to my collection and my first review on Dialicious. It's also my first with the GMT complication, which is more of an excuse than a real use. Initially starting with a "simple" BB 58, it caught my eye during my research with its black and red coke bezel. Although I wasn't initially attracted to the red, it's relatively dark and blends perfectly with the gold indexes and numerals on the bezel.
I was totally convinced in the store, as the photos didn't show it off enough.
It also has the following appeal: water resistance to 200m with its screw-down crown, Metas caliber.
And finally, the pleasant surprise, this brushed "oyster" style bracelet with T-fit adjustment. I look at the dial/bezel as often as the bracelet itself.
It's certainly the latest addition to my collection, but its popularity is climbing every day. Tudor has really made a big impact with this model, which I wouldn't have considered based on a simple description of its design.
