The Explorer, you either love it or you don't pay any attention to it, it's up to you...
For my part, this Explorer is a watch that has spoken to me for years. Here, it is the reference 124270, a version that combines heritage and modernity. Indeed, we find the classic deep black dial, the Mercedes hand and the famous 3-6-9-triangle. This Rolex has managed to keep "vintage" proportions with a historic diameter of 36mm and a visually very successful brushed oyster bracelet thanks to an "old-fashioned taper" from 19 to 14 mm. The fine links and an extension allowing you to easily gain a few millimeters in case of extreme heat make this bracelet very comfortable. Without a chamfer, the case with slightly curved sides is topped with a beveled bezel that slightly overflows onto the bracelet, which gives the whole thing a beautiful presence.
The daytime readability is excellent whatever the reading angle, thanks in particular to the faceted indexes and hands; the luminova makes the pleasure last all night long.
Light, thin and waterproof, this watch is easy to wear in all situations.
Celebrating a significant moment in my life, its name resonates with me and reminds me every day how urgent it is to explore the rest of one's life.

Ideas sometimes die hard. For me, the Datejust (DJ) was a bit of a throwback, even a bit of a "look at me"! I never imagined myself wearing a DJ until I looked at the 1601s, and more specifically the "tritium-free" version, which doesn't feel like a slouch on my wrist. Having come across a few rare examples in recent years, I jumped at the chance to acquire a beautiful piece from 1973.

Why do I like this watch so much?
1/ For its superb tritium-free dial, which still retains the charm of the old world! The dial is slightly sunburst, and its unusual color changes from gray to lavender depending on the light; magical. The "step dial" and long indexes also add a lot of depth to this dial. Finally, I find that the absence of tritium adds a unique touch to this version.

2/ For its bezel! The dial is highlighted by a delicate fluted white gold bezel, contrasting with a steel case whose shape has been well-preserved for its age. You could almost think it was a two-tone model depending on the light.

3/ For its bracelet! The charm of this watch also lies in its folded jubilee bracelet; and how comfortable it is, it's a revelation! I also appreciate this thin period clasp, which gives off a typically vintage charm!

4/ For its flaws! It's not perfect, and that's precisely what makes it so interesting in my eyes... yes, the caliber 1570 doesn't have a quick-set date, but it's still very accurate. So, ultimately, why not wear this unique and endearing Datejust every day!

Finally, I'd like to tell you that just because you think you'll never like this model doesn't mean there isn't a 4- or 5-digit version that could radically change your mind, and that's a good thing!
Be careful, this statement—which applies to any watch model—is dangerous not only for your mental health but also for your wallet!

Datejust 1601 without tritium: just class!

As a GMT and "tool" watch enthusiast, I was initially going for an Explorer II, and I was also able to try the 226570 at the same time as the Black Bay Pro (BB Pro)! Despite the availability of the Rolex, I only had eyes for the crown keeper.
I appreciate this BB Pro first and foremost for its bezel, whose satin finish is very beautifully crafted. This bezel highlights a matte dial that oscillates between anthracite gray and black. It highlights studs made of a kind of ceramic and well-integrated snowflake hands. Obviously, the orange-yellow GMT hand energizes the design without overdoing it. The cream shade of the studs and hands brings a slightly vintage touch. Visibility is excellent during the day and the luminova is super powerful. Everything is enhanced by a domed sapphire crystal that gives beautiful distortions.
The bracelet would have been more elegant without its rivets, but it is very comfortable! The "on the fly" adjustment system of the clasp of this BB pro is amazingly simple and effective. Besides, I like to change my strap regularly, I never considered it for this BB Pro.
It is not a thin watch, I grant you, but when worn it is not shocking, especially thanks to harmonious proportions, a contained diameter of 39mm and an oversized signed crown; finally a mirror polish on the edge and fine chamfers finish off lightening the whole. She is an adventurer, she likes military shirts with rolled up sleeves; rest assured, a simple swimsuit is enough for her because she also enjoys swimming with its 200m water resistance.
The "true GMT" caliber MT5652 (COSC) is very precise and easy to use.
Ultimately, this BB pro is an efficient and comfortable watch that makes me smile every time I see that GMT hand set to the time zone of a city where I've had so many great times.

A GMT armed for adventure!

Stealthy like the S617 and as black as the black pearl, this 5303 has charm. Its atypical design is inspired by great achievements (Seamaster 300), yet it seems unique. The finish is excellent. The Soprod Newton movement is precise (-2 to -4s/d). The only downside is the handling of the crown which could be improved.

Serica 5303: From the Bold to the Black Pearl

The spirit range with date window at 3 o'clock didn't appeal to me, but this 37mm version, window at 6 o'clock, with its contained dimensions caught my attention as soon as it came out. I chose this champagne sunray dial (supposedly for women) whose appearance varies from light gold to silver depending on the light. The finishes are of excellent quality, a mixture of brushed steel and polished chamfer, the engraved crown controls a COSC-certified ETA A31.L11 movement. Mounted on a very comfortable bracelet and equipped with a "quick release" system, it looks sporty but a change of bracelet transforms the watch for a sometimes heritage and sometimes dressy look. I am reducing the quality/price ratio rating following the increase of €260 in 6 months, which is totally unjustified!

Spirit 37mm, it has everything a big one has!

The Serica 4512 Commando or how to make a "field watch" exciting!
This is a discreet and efficient watch but one that does not lack character. Its case is simply brushed but its large bezel - brushed vertically and with a polished chamfer - gives presence to this watch with very contained dimensions (diameter: 38 mm and horn-to-horn: 46 mm). Simple, contrasting and symmetrical, its deep black dial is a success. I particularly appreciate the typology adopted, the elongation of the markers at each hour and the deformation created by the sapphire crystal. A fan of "broad arrow" hands, those of this Serica are brushed and generously filled with Luminova ensuring optimal reading whatever the light. The manual Soprod P24 mechanism that powers this watch is a model of precision. The generously sized screw-down crown ensures pleasant winding and contributes to the water resistance of the watch announced at 200m. I naturally associate this 4512 with NATOs but its original bonklip-type strap is very comfortable and allows for a change from the military register. What is the little detail that I prefer on this watch? Its bezel certainly contributes to the charm of this piece but what I prefer is this magical moment when the sharp minute hand is superimposed on the hour hand, the whole thing then takes the shape of a fighter plane that systematically makes me dream (see the photo)! In 2023, Rambo would surely go on a mission with a G-Shock but it would not have the charm of this 4512 Commando!

4512, a revisited commando!

The GW-5000U is designed in the spirit of the first G-Shocks - that's how I like them - but it has modern features like solar charging or multi-band. A more high-end version than the 5600s, it is made in Japan; it benefits from a high-quality resin and a very appreciable screwed back. The famous "shock resist" logo underlined in red gives it that little retro side of the first G-Shocks. Comfort is there but you will need nails or sharp fingers to manipulate the pushers. The contrast is excellent (even with polarized glasses) and the LED lighting is very effective.

It is a purist's G-Shock that will accompany me everywhere that the other watches in my collection cannot accompany me without fear.

G-Shock GW-5000U: authentically modern!

We can say that watches are professional, that they are made to explore the seabed, climb Everest or go to the moon, but personally when I buy one for several thousand Euros I don't even go swimming with it! I can be booed but hey that's my way of seeing things and my way of preserving my pieces. Each acquisition has been the subject of an often long journey accompanied by a few deprivations and deserves a little respect. In short, for each activity that is even slightly risky, I preferred not to wear a watch rather than risk damaging one.

Shortly before leaving for a ski trip, I remembered the hassle of the previous year every time I wanted to know the time. You open your jacket because you don't have an outside pocket, so on the chairlift you freeze them. Your fingers are frozen and you risk dropping your poles at best, or your glove or your phone at worst. In the end, you finally manage to see the time but also an email from work that ends up ruining the rest of your week.

So my new watchmaking quest was born: that of a (real) tool watch with the criteria of a contained size (to fit under your ski jacket :-) and a reasonable price so as not to be afraid of damaging it. In reality, the quest was not long, I turned directly to the G-Shock. The choice is plentiful, they are generally quite imposing, the models have references to lay outside, it is not always easy to find your way around... But hey, with perseverance, I (re)discovered the GW-M5610U, it was it and no other.

No time to wait, a little Prime and the package was delivered the next day. When I unpacked it, I was propelled into the DeLorean at 88 MPH to find myself directly in my middle school in 5th B. Honestly, what a joy! It really smells of the 80s with its digital display, its characteristic shape, its little indications everywhere. No need to read the technical sheet, everything is marked on the dial or the bottom! Its size is really great, super small, quite thin, really ideal for me. I felt even younger when I rediscovered the little beep each time a button is pressed, I can no longer stop myself from starting and restarting a stopwatch and resetting it. But the highlight of the show, the cherry on the cake, the finale of the fireworks, is the blue backlighting each time you flip your wrist to check the time in the dark! My God, I love it, a real joy! It has other advantages with its automatic time setting and solar charging. And honestly, for a hundred euros, isn't it crazy? When you see the price today of my K-Way from the summer camp days...

You'll have understood that I love it. It's not the one I wear the most, but what a smile every time I take it out of the box! In my opinion, each collection should have at least 2 watches, including a GW-M5610U (at least for the collections of nostalgic forty-somethings :-).

For nostalgic forty-somethings

Casio g-shock GW-M5600 from 2008... how to talk about it? How to describe it? Bought new 15 years ago, it hasn't changed. It accompanied me to the ends of the earth... always on time, waterproof and many other things. You put it down in the evening, it goes into standby mode and, in the morning, it wakes up at first light... radio controlled in addition... the only concession at the time, its plastic manufacturing material, less comfortable than the current one. It seems that it is a "must have", I am willing to believe it.

I have been a G-shock fan for a long time, like since 1998! As soon as I got my first job, while taking the Parisian metro, I stopped at a CASIO stand to buy myself my first G-shock. I still have it, by the way. It is in a bad state from wearing it so much. But the story was on its way, not the big story but the little personal story with watchmaking. Before that, I had a few watches, Yema watches, CASIO swatches. But there I chose something that gave me strong emotions. Since then, I have had dozens of G-shocks. At all prices, in all colors, in all shapes. And I constantly alternated between Swiss watches and G-shocks depending on the moment and the conditions. And then recently I went back to the New York and Paris G-shocks one after the other and I rediscovered the legendary 1983 model! The famous black rectangular one. And I fell for this little €100 watch that I proudly wear on my wrist! And which attracts as many comments from watch enthusiasts as a Navitimer, yes yes. In short, G-Shock is fun, it’s timeless and unwavering. It’s pure genius. I love it.

Legendary for 40 years!

Casio g-shock GW-5000U...I've had it for 3 days but I can't help but give my opinion because I know it so well. It's the same solar module as my GW-M5600. Its construction material is flexible and soft. The price of 300 euros is justified by its manufacture in Japan which out of the box is great! Indeed it was on time and date in Tokyo! The size is contained. Heavier than my two other models presented. A great choice. Oh yes it has bluetooth, gadget....
