The Explorer II in polar attire!

The Explorer 2 has come a long way since the legendary 1655 and its stylistic redesign embodied by the 16550, which laid the foundations for a strong and timeless design that has changed very little since. I chose this 16570 "polar" model from 2001 precisely because it combines these historical design elements with modern specifications, including sufficient water resistance for everyday wear. What do I like about this model? First and foremost, I appreciate the 16570 for its brushed bezel and the typography of the engraved numerals; it's both rugged and refined. The case is also very well-executed, with a 40mm diameter, a slim profile, beautifully proportioned lugs, and an alternation of brushed and polished finishes. Finally, the crown guard creates an asymmetry that adds character to the overall design while also being functional. Obviously, the white dial played a significant role in choosing this watch. This dial could be made of the whitest porcelain and still be virtually indistinguishable, but above all, it's elegant yet functional, as the black lacquered hands contrast effectively against the white dial, allowing for easy reading in any situation (even without a bezel!). The iconic Mercedes-style hour hand is accompanied by the equally famous GMT hand, shared with the GMT Master II, which adds a touch of color to this monochrome display. Finally, the date is displayed through a cyclops lens, a feature that may be divisive but whose usefulness is undeniable. The whole thing is protected by a flat sapphire crystal, modern and clinical. The movement is a 3185 caliber, characterized by a GMT hand that wobbles depending on the settings; I love it! Even though it's a bit dated, it remains remarkably accurate. Finally, the bracelet isn't its strongest point by modern standards, but I find it comfortable and lightweight. I'd like to give a special mention to the clasp, both for its design, its slim profile, and the practicality of its adjustment (with a toothpick, of course!). I was also determined to have solid end pieces while retaining the drilled lugs. Indeed, while I appreciate the metal bracelet, it's especially on a leather strap that this 16570 reveals its full potential. As you can see, this 16570 is an ideal companion for those who want a watch with character, a history, and a touch of modernity.
