Orator Owner Review : Elegant, unique and memorable

I present to you this Orator, probably dating from the late 1960s or early 1970s. With its modest 33mm diameter, it might seem small by today's standards, but its wide dial opening and generous 40mm lug-to-lug width give it a surprisingly contemporary presence. The rose gold-plated case, with its classic design, is remarkably thin (5mm, or 9mm with the plexiglass crystal), and the sloping lugs, combined with a supple leather strap, allow the watch to sit perfectly on the wrist. Its 35g weight, including the strap, also makes it a true pleasure to wear. Its balanced and slightly patinated step dial is undeniably charming. It is enhanced by Dauphine hands and faceted rose gold hour markers that catch the light with great elegance. The shield-shaped logo bearing an "S" refers to the original manufacturer, Schild & Co SA, later renamed Orator. Inside beats a 21-jewel, hand-wound FHF67 movement: reliable, robust, and surprisingly accurate for its age. Beyond its design, this little gem holds immeasurable sentimental value: it belonged to my grandfather, with whom I have my earliest horological memories. Needless to say, it occupies a very special place in my collection.
