Among the most legendary pieces in watchmaking, the TAG Heuer Monaco Calibre 11 occupies a special place. It's much more than a simple chronograph: it's an icon born in 1969, made famous on Steve McQueen's wrist in Le Mans. And today, it's part of my collection.

This model, which I found at Watchfinder, captivated me with its unconventional design: a 39mm square case, the crown positioned on the left, and a petrol blue dial that's as vibrant as it is timeless. The silver counters and red hands reinforce its resolutely racing look, echoing the world of the racetrack.

Wearing this watch means embracing a style, but also a heritage: that of technical audacity (one of the first automatic chronographs) and radical design. I particularly appreciate its perforated leather strap, reminiscent of pilot's gloves, and its automatic caliber 11, which drives the heart of this legend with precision and reliability.

The Monaco is my first blue dial, and it never goes unnoticed. It has joined my collection as a nod to history, but also as a piece I will happily wear, especially this summer, with a linen shirt... Because some watches just aren't meant to be left in a box.

This Navitimer has a crazy charm! This vintage gold and steel model was the model worn by Serge Gainsbourg who had replaced the leather strap with a steel bracelet at the time because of his sweating problems. Its more contained case with its 41mm is more easily wearable for small wrists than the recent 43mm models. The reverse panda dial, the old winged logo and this gold/steel combination make this Breitling a must have for any collector of watch icons.

A family watch that belonged to my great-grandfather and therefore has great sentimental value. It has a crazy class before its small rose gold case and its chrono function with red hand which gives it this little sporty touch. I had it restored by my watchmaker when I received it and I installed a brown racing strap. It pleases everyone because it combines sportiness, discretion and class. I am still careful because it remains fragile so I only wear it for family meals.

The latest arrival in my collection, this Panerai seduced me with its contained diameter of 40mm and its water resistance to 300m. This model is no longer produced and has been replaced by the Quaranta with the same diameter with a thinner case but with a lower water resistance of 100m. It also has the particularity of having a cyclops for the date. Its massive style and its very luminescent indexes make this watch immediately recognizable with its famous crown protector and its rubber very pleasant to wear. It should be noted however that this watch is relatively heavy even if you get used to it quickly.

This is the one that started it all. Acquired in 1989, when I was 16, with the salary from my first summer job, it satisfied the desire to be older. At the time, I think we talked more about Breitling and Cartier than Rolex. I had the opportunity to buy this quartz model for 3,000.00 francs and since then, despite all the criticism I have heard about its reliability, it has only had two servicings and battery changes. Worn daily for 10 years, and still today when nostalgia arises, in the city as well as at the beach, winter as well as summer, in quiet as during my National Service in an Infantry Regiment, it has never let me down. It had the particularity of being sold new with different variations of bezel (graduated in one direction or the other, with the cardinal points in compass style, etc.). Obtained with a bracelet called "nautical shark" which did not last, I quickly abandoned the steel acquired at a high price at the time because it was much too heavy and uncomfortable. Today the bracelet, which I still have, must be worth more than the watch but yet it will be the one that remains when the end comes and I will have passed on the others.

The first

I am 30 years old, a milestone, a stage, a symbol of moving into a new decade. As usual, every important gift is related to a timepiece. For my 20th birthday, the Speedmaster seemed obvious to me as I had seen this watch on the wrists of my childhood heroes. For this one, the choice was more complex, because no model was unanimous in my mind, Cartier Santos, Reverso, Black Bay...
Months go by and still no internal consensus, at the turn of an evening, I notice on the wrist of a friend a watch that I have rarely had the opportunity to see in real life, a Navitimer. I had a rather negative idea of this watch that I saw overloaded, illegible and above all huge! What was my surprise to see that it is in fact a model in its vintage version I specify, a quite sublime watch. The proportions are good and easy to read, the 41 mm case does not really change the format of my speed and I like the leather strap knowing that I do not have one in my collection yet. In short, this meeting guides me in my search until I find an ideal model in Le Mans. This model from the 60s brings together everything I like, a story thanks to the heritage of the Navitimer but also by this LIP inscription on the dial testifying to a French-speaking partnership that is almost forgotten today. In addition, this model in very good condition has a patina to which I am not insensitive. Since it entered my collection, I have had trouble storing it, I no longer wear it. Its main strength and its ease of association with any type of clothing makes it very versatile
In short, dear reader, I would highly recommend this timepiece that I never leave home without.

An unexpected encounter

For a long time I hesitated to take the plunge, I already have chronos, more readable ...
But I came across this model with a magnificent patina "as I like them" of 41mm without crown, not too thick, tritium, original plexi not scratched, case in remarkable condition, paper box ... a 7750 very well known and "easy" to have serviced. I have a Breitling leather strap of correct quality but not very glamorous, a rubber not necessarily period but of Breitling origin and quality. And above all I equipped it with a strap custom-made by ABP in Aligator with very precise specifications.
This watch has a history beyond the history of this "aviator" model because it belonged to a pilot of the Canadian Air Force. A precision to which I am sensitive having the pleasure of wearing a watch that I like and which had a hectic life!

A face! And a story!

The spirit of the Navitimer in a dress watch!
Having long been amazed by the Breitling universe and more particularly the Navitimer, I have long been frustrated by the very imposing diameters that the brand offers. This 3-hand Navitimer was an obvious choice for me when its release was announced.
The “simplicity” of its dial, the superb finishes, the return of the beaded bezel and the finesse of the case make this watch the perfect in-between for those looking for Breitling’s DNA and an elegant timepiece.

Navitimer auto 41

Ever since I first became interested in watchmaking, the Breitling Navitimer has always been there, in the background. A sort of silent, obvious presence. An essential icon. And yet, every chance I got, I set it aside, preferring another—a more discreet model, a different style, a current favorite.

But one day, almost by chance, during a clearance sale at a major jeweler, it was waiting for me. A 43 mm Navitimer Blue Edition, equipped with the brand-new B01 caliber. A recent model, but still bearing the legendary ink and wings logo. In other words, a nod to the past in a contemporary guise. Polished case, pilot strap, deep blue dial. Beautiful, elegant, technical.

Of course, I fell for it. How could I resist? I left with it on my wrist, my heart pounding, with the euphoric feeling of having finally found "the one."

But there you have it. Once the honeymoon period was over, I began to have doubts.

Yes, it's impressive. Yes, the movement is top-notch, the finish impeccable. But something was missing. That little extra soul. That slightly old-fashioned charm, that raw feel that older Navitimers have, those from before the 2010s. That more balanced panda dial. That more measured presence.

Because despite its "contained" 43 mm, the openness of the dial makes it more imposing than it should be. And this blue, combined with the black, perhaps lacks contrast. Too much mirror polish too: between the case and the strap, it's almost too flashy for me. In short, it's moving away – slowly but surely – from what I love about the Navitimer spirit.

So I'm thinking. What if this is just a sidestep, before the real leap? I'm thinking of selling it. And going back to an older, purer model. A 2008, a 2009 perhaps. Or even a true vintage. Black dial, white subdials. A 40 mm diameter, perfect in my eyes for a pilot's watch. And a custom leather strap that tells a different story. A more reckless look if you have the ref.

Because, deep down, I haven't found the Navitimer of my dreams yet. But I'm getting closer. And perhaps that's the true watchmaking quest: learning to listen to what each watch tells us... to finally hear what we're really looking for.
