Grand Seiko has mastered a particular art: that of telling a watch's story and celebrating it in all its aspects. As Les Rhabilleurs rightly point out, the brand is not limited to telling the time. Some watches simply tell the time, while others, rarer ones, tell a true story. The Grand Seiko SBGA413 undeniably falls into this second category, perfectly illustrating Lenouveaureveil's words, which are so resonant and easy to identify with.

A Tribute to the Seasons and Japanese Nature

This model belongs to a collection inspired by the seasons and is named Shunbun, corresponding to the spring equinox in Japan. It evokes that unique moment when the cherry blossoms, or sakura, reach their peak, just before their petals fall. The textured dial of the SBGA413, a spectacle in itself, is distinguished by a subtle hue that varies depending on the light, oscillating between pink and silver. This visual creation also echoes water, and this watch offers, to borrow the quotes above, "a textured dial that captures the moment." Depending on the angle or ambient light, whether natural or artificial, the watch presents a constantly changing face.

Exceptional Details

Grand Seiko's signature faceted indexes and dauphine hands ensure perfect readability from any viewing angle. The seconds hand stands out with its fluid and hypnotic, smooth movement, made possible by the Spring Drive caliber, renowned for its accuracy of +/- 1 second per day and its 72-hour power reserve.
The 40mm case, made of high-intensity titanium, gives the watch great lightness while ensuring a real presence on the wrist. This feeling is reinforced by the "front/back" sapphire crystals and the weight of the movement parts, for a total of approximately 95 to 105g with the titanium or leather strap, the latter being my preference. The beveled lugs and the surfaces polished using the Zaratsu technique are details that, in my opinion, distinguish this watch from its competitors, which are often much more expensive for similar quality and finishes.
The transparent case back showcases the caliber 9R65, whose rotor features a refined decoration.

A watch integrated into my collection

How did this watch join my collection? First and foremost, I've always been drawn to Japanese culture, even though I'm not an expert. Within a collection, we find different profiles: some invest financially, while others seek to diversify, for example by acquiring a watch for each specific use (aviation, diving, special event, work, etc.). There are also impulse buyers, a category to which I sometimes belong: the excitement of purchasing and receiving the watch is an exhilarating feeling—when I was younger, it was with Lego (in fact, it's still the case today...lol).

I really wanted to add a Spring Drive model to my collection, but not just any model: the Skyflex also appealed to me, as did the Autumn version (SBGA415). However, it was the SBGA413, with its unique reflections, that was a real favorite. It's a watch that doesn't go unnoticed while remaining discreet and elegant.

As mentioned previously, I fitted it with a custom-made ABP strap made of gray ostrich leather and lined with marine calfskin (often my favorite for its durability and waterproof properties).
The previous Delugs bracelet, although very beautiful, was not suitable for the leather strap buckle that I subsequently acquired from the lovely salespeople at the Grand Seiko Vendôme Paris boutique.

An Ode to Japanese Watchmaking Precision and Spring

If there's one timeless watch, I think it's this one: for its history, for all its reissues since its creation in the 1960s, and I think that, along with the Rolex Submariner, OP, DJ, etc., it's a watch that remains timeless and whose appearance remains fairly close to the original.
From this, one might be tempted to say that there's a lack of originality, research, or even be tempted to assume that it's a clone: sacrilege!! :)
Joking aside... between the movement developments (since the 321 and its column wheel, the Lémania variations, the recent coaxial ones...), the color variations, special editions or reissues (which, between us, are becoming a bit too numerous for my taste, marketing marketing!...), it has come a long way, and not just from the Earth to the Moon (or to please the conspiracy theorists - of which I am not one - from Switzerland to Stanley Kubrick's Studio... lol)
This watch has another value for me too, and I'm not talking about the financial side. First of all, it's my second "Speed." I initially bought a recent one a few years ago with a magnificent oversized set, but above all bulky and hellish to store! And then... with sapphire crystal on top and underneath to admire the Lemania underneath. Frankly, I got tired of it: tired of the weight of the "beast," tired of the heavy straight steel bracelet with the built-in hair removal function; Tired of this kind of whitish circle because of the sapphire crystal: in short, tired of this lack of charm and character of the older ones. I sold it after 3-4 years.
I came across this one about a year and a half ago and fell in love with it (obviously I would have preferred one from the 60s with a 321, but it's difficult to find in good condition and especially impossible at a price that fits my budget). I fell in love, I said, with the patina of the indexes (the last tritium ones - from 1996), the overall cleanliness, which for a moment scared me a little about the risk of having a "Frankenwatch" (but not a good one, just well-maintained, preserved, and rarely worn by the previous owner), I fell in love with this original, discreet "plexiglass" crystal, and the feeling that it's ultimately my "first speed". Even the strap inspires me more (tapered with a thinner buckle making it more comfortable). Being a bit of a diehard when it comes to purchasing a watch, I have several reference books on the model and/or brand: Moonwatch Only (the bible), A Watch on the Moon, etc.
Ultimately, it's this blend of emotion and history that this beautiful Speedmaster inspires in me that I'm happy to share here.

To celebrate its 170th anniversary, Auricoste unveils Fusco, a 170-piece limited edition watch that pays homage to the Fusiliers Commandos and features the motto "Force & Honor" engraved on the back of each piece. Note FUS for Fusiliers and CO for Commando.
I was captivated on that sunny day at TimeFest in Bordeaux. I find its 37mm x 11mm dimensions very well proportioned.
On the wrist, it feels very discreet, thin, and light, including the steel bracelet.
Surprisingly, as someone familiar with 40mm wrists (Submariner, etc.) or 41-42mm wrists like the Seamaster, I was seduced by its presence and comfort on the wrist. It was only when I placed it next to a Seamaster Bond that I realized the difference.
I appreciate the case finish and the beautiful brushed buckle on the steel bracelet with its micro-adjustment. These vintage Neo touches, which some describe as the lume dots on the indexes, the logo on the steel bracelet's folding clasp, and the transparent caseback, are quite subtle.

A favorite at TimeFest 2025

It's a pleasure for me to share with you this "prose" about my 1960 Airain Type XX - a watch dear to some ALAT (Army Light Aviation) pilots.
I acquired this watch before the COVID period at a watch fair in Dourdan. Fairly soon after its acquisition and some problems with the Flyback, it went to recover! But the patient remained in the clinic for a long time! Between the eclipse of COVID (I know my Marvel classics 😅), a lack of parts and the loss of a watchmaker friend in Paris, it had an eventful convalescence... Nearly 3 years later, a visit to the excellent Atelier des Tocantes in the 17th arrondissement, and it was with a certain emotion or a certain emotion that I got my hands on it again!
A fascinating story from the outset for these Type XX watches: Breguet, Dodane, Airain, Chrobofixe, etc., equipped with an excellent Valjoux 222 "flyback."
Generous dimensions for the time: 37.5mm excluding the crown, approximately 10mm thick.
A beautiful patina on this one gives it a certain charm, a "buy-it" criterion for me!
A real pleasure for me to share it!

A must-have for collectors - 1960

I had already had a certain hype for the By Stef "1" then I had missed it with other projects and especially another Grand Fond in my collection. (A Spirit whose review I have already posted on Dialicious). I must admit for the anecdote that it was the second ZRC and always a more demanding expectation on a dial that I considered too wise. When the By Stef 2 project started I again came close to correction with another compulsive purchase 😊… and finally… Knowing Stéphane Clouzeau for a few years, I contacted him recently just after the opening night and I benefited from a cancellation. 24h delivery (Pithiviers is not very far from Paris where I live)
From there, ZRC, for me - diver (or ex future diver) is also a story of passions, stories, strict specifications: passing through prestigious ambassadors: the Jacques Cousteau, divers / mine clearers of the Mediterranean ... A story that started 120 years ago and then a more hollow period like many brands and the resurrection. Of the 2000s which is not ephemeral seen from the window and this thanks to a committed CEO whose name is linked to the brand.

A colorful favorite!

For a long time I hesitated to take the plunge, I already have chronos, more readable ...
But I came across this model with a magnificent patina "as I like them" of 41mm without crown, not too thick, tritium, original plexi not scratched, case in remarkable condition, paper box ... a 7750 very well known and "easy" to have serviced. I have a Breitling leather strap of correct quality but not very glamorous, a rubber not necessarily period but of Breitling origin and quality. And above all I equipped it with a strap custom-made by ABP in Aligator with very precise specifications.
This watch has a history beyond the history of this "aviator" model because it belonged to a pilot of the Canadian Air Force. A precision to which I am sensitive having the pleasure of wearing a watch that I like and which had a hectic life!

This is the one that started it all. Acquired in 1989, when I was 16, with the salary from my first summer job, it satisfied the desire to be older. At the time, I think we talked more about Breitling and Cartier than Rolex. I had the opportunity to buy this quartz model for 3,000.00 francs and since then, despite all the criticism I have heard about its reliability, it has only had two servicings and battery changes. Worn daily for 10 years, and still today when nostalgia arises, in the city as well as at the beach, winter as well as summer, in quiet as during my National Service in an Infantry Regiment, it has never let me down. It had the particularity of being sold new with different variations of bezel (graduated in one direction or the other, with the cardinal points in compass style, etc.). Obtained with a bracelet called "nautical shark" which did not last, I quickly abandoned the steel acquired at a high price at the time because it was much too heavy and uncomfortable. Today the bracelet, which I still have, must be worth more than the watch but yet it will be the one that remains when the end comes and I will have passed on the others.

The first

I am 30 years old, a milestone, a stage, a symbol of moving into a new decade. As usual, every important gift is related to a timepiece. For my 20th birthday, the Speedmaster seemed obvious to me as I had seen this watch on the wrists of my childhood heroes. For this one, the choice was more complex, because no model was unanimous in my mind, Cartier Santos, Reverso, Black Bay...
Months go by and still no internal consensus, at the turn of an evening, I notice on the wrist of a friend a watch that I have rarely had the opportunity to see in real life, a Navitimer. I had a rather negative idea of this watch that I saw overloaded, illegible and above all huge! What was my surprise to see that it is in fact a model in its vintage version I specify, a quite sublime watch. The proportions are good and easy to read, the 41 mm case does not really change the format of my speed and I like the leather strap knowing that I do not have one in my collection yet. In short, this meeting guides me in my search until I find an ideal model in Le Mans. This model from the 60s brings together everything I like, a story thanks to the heritage of the Navitimer but also by this LIP inscription on the dial testifying to a French-speaking partnership that is almost forgotten today. In addition, this model in very good condition has a patina to which I am not insensitive. Since it entered my collection, I have had trouble storing it, I no longer wear it. Its main strength and its ease of association with any type of clothing makes it very versatile
In short, dear reader, I would highly recommend this timepiece that I never leave home without.

An unexpected encounter

The spirit of the Navitimer in a dress watch!
Having long been amazed by the Breitling universe and more particularly the Navitimer, I have long been frustrated by the very imposing diameters that the brand offers. This 3-hand Navitimer was an obvious choice for me when its release was announced.
The “simplicity” of its dial, the superb finishes, the return of the beaded bezel and the finesse of the case make this watch the perfect in-between for those looking for Breitling’s DNA and an elegant timepiece.

Navitimer auto 41

Ever since I first became interested in watchmaking, the Breitling Navitimer has always been there, in the background. A sort of silent, obvious presence. An essential icon. And yet, every chance I got, I set it aside, preferring another—a more discreet model, a different style, a current favorite.

But one day, almost by chance, during a clearance sale at a major jeweler, it was waiting for me. A 43 mm Navitimer Blue Edition, equipped with the brand-new B01 caliber. A recent model, but still bearing the legendary ink and wings logo. In other words, a nod to the past in a contemporary guise. Polished case, pilot strap, deep blue dial. Beautiful, elegant, technical.

Of course, I fell for it. How could I resist? I left with it on my wrist, my heart pounding, with the euphoric feeling of having finally found "the one."

But there you have it. Once the honeymoon period was over, I began to have doubts.

Yes, it's impressive. Yes, the movement is top-notch, the finish impeccable. But something was missing. That little extra soul. That slightly old-fashioned charm, that raw feel that older Navitimers have, those from before the 2010s. That more balanced panda dial. That more measured presence.

Because despite its "contained" 43 mm, the openness of the dial makes it more imposing than it should be. And this blue, combined with the black, perhaps lacks contrast. Too much mirror polish too: between the case and the strap, it's almost too flashy for me. In short, it's moving away – slowly but surely – from what I love about the Navitimer spirit.

So I'm thinking. What if this is just a sidestep, before the real leap? I'm thinking of selling it. And going back to an older, purer model. A 2008, a 2009 perhaps. Or even a true vintage. Black dial, white subdials. A 40 mm diameter, perfect in my eyes for a pilot's watch. And a custom leather strap that tells a different story. A more reckless look if you have the ref.

Because, deep down, I haven't found the Navitimer of my dreams yet. But I'm getting closer. And perhaps that's the true watchmaking quest: learning to listen to what each watch tells us... to finally hear what we're really looking for.

A Boyingtonian watch

This Navitimer has a crazy charm! This vintage gold and steel model was the model worn by Serge Gainsbourg who had replaced the leather strap with a steel bracelet at the time because of his sweating problems. Its more contained case with its 41mm is more easily wearable for small wrists than the recent 43mm models. The reverse panda dial, the old winged logo and this gold/steel combination make this Breitling a must have for any collector of watch icons.
