HISTORICAL PROPORTIONS AND TECHNICAL PROWESS

The Black Bay 54 model is the model closest, aesthetically speaking, to the first TUDOR diver's watch, the reference 7922. Offered with a 37 mm case, it retains the general proportions of its source of inspiration while being equipped with the high-performance Manufacture Calibre MT5400 and water resistance to 200 m. A characteristic element and faithful to the aesthetics of the period, the unidirectional bezel does not have a minute graduation. However, the aesthetic details do not stop at the dimensions of the case and the bezel. The seconds hand, with its round luminous disc, evokes the appearance of the hand of the original model. The ergonomics have also evolved with a redesigned crown and bezel, but which nevertheless retain the historical spirit.

A DIVE INTO THE PAST

The spirit of Black Bay is part of the history of the brand. The Black Bay line has always highlighted iconic elements of old TUDOR diver’s watches, but the Black Bay 54 is perhaps the closest model to a specific historical piece created to date. The Oyster Prince Submariner reference 7922, one of the first modern diver’s watches, is a great source of inspiration since it is known to have been evaluated and then adopted by the French and American Navies as well as widely used by the pioneers of professional diving. The first versions of the reference 7922 featured a “small crown”, but not yet the red triangle at 12 o’clock, which would later become one of the brand’s signatures. These details gave it a refined and understated aesthetic. The Black Bay 54 is faithful to its model and takes up a large number of distinctive details. The minute hand, for example, in addition to adjusted proportions, is beveled at its base, as on the 1954 model. The second hand is as close as can be to the original. The profile of the bezel ring is also faithful to that of the reference 7922, as are the markings on its aluminum insert. The Black Bay 54 also features resolutely modern touches, such as a satin-sun dial and a “T-fit” clasp for a perfect fit and, of course, the Manufacture Caliber MT5400, a concentrate of high-performance watchmaking technology.

Context of purchase:

I acquired the ranger (m79950-0001) for my 20th birthday. I was looking for a watch to wear every day, adapted to my lifestyle, capable of making me dream and which ticked a series of characteristics.

While trying on several timepieces in store, I ended up coming across the Tudor Ranger. It ticked all my criteria: Swiss manufacture, timepiece with a historical anecdote, robust, versatile, quality and discreet movement.

The Ranger was released on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the British North Greenland Expedition. Although it is not exactly the model that was used during the expedition, the history of the Ranger is no less fascinating.

Dimensions:

The Ranger has a diameter of 39mm. With my 18cm wrist, I had no problem with the size of the case. The Ranger falls very well on my wrist. I find its dimensions very well proportioned. As an indication, its lug width measures 47.7mm.

Design:

The watch is almost entirely made of brushed steel, with the exception of a thin line around the dial (surely one of my favorite details). This choice of not having a lot of polished steel makes the Ranger coherent. It thus asserts its look of a functional tool watch and its taste for adventure. The Ranger has never been so prepared for adventure thanks to its design, its robust movement and its T-fit bracelet that allows it to adapt to needs. However, it is no less versatile and thus allows you to face a more formal meeting in the morning, to go hiking in the afternoon and to read the time when returning home in the evening thanks to effective luminescence.

The dial is a matte black color with the only inscriptions: Tudor, Geneva, Ranger and the shield. The indexes are painted in a cream color that tends towards cream/yellow. The simplicity of the dial brings out all its little details even more: domed sapphire crystal, red second hand tip, reflections of the hands and the bezel rim. I didn't like the color of the indexes the first time I saw it. But over the months, I realize that this color is becoming endearing. The more I see it, the more I appreciate it. All in all, it makes for a charming dial, extremely readable and very functional. I appreciate the fact that the dial is not cluttered, this makes it functional and pleasant to use throughout the day. 

What I also like is the humility of this piece. It does not attract attention and therefore does not attract theft. It has no other pretension than to satisfy the owner (no social status, no extravagance). Even the COSC certificate is not displayed on the dial, which lightens it and makes the watch more readable. 

Also note that the Ranger is water-resistant to 10 bar/100 m and has a screw-down crown. 

Movement:

The movement is a self-winding mechanical movement with a bidirectional rotor system. It is the COSC-certified MT5402 manufacture caliber from Tudor. I will add a nuance to the term "manufacture": it is a movement produced by Kenissi, whose shareholders are Tudor and Chanel in particular. On this subject, everyone sees noon at their door. The caliber is more precise (-2 to +4 sec/day) than the COSC standards (-4 to +6 sec/day).

In use, this translates into a movement that is very pleasant to wind, both in terms of sound and sensations. The watch turns out to be very precise. 

Conclusion:

Finally, my general feeling is positive. It is a watch that goes straight to the essentials. I love wearing it and handling it. The finishes are top notch and its simplicity, although sometimes criticized, is the very essence of this timepiece. This simple design highlights all the little details that can be admired for hours. You might wonder if today the only use of a watch is not to measure the time you spend admiring it. It is a functional and versatile tool watch that can cope with any situation.

The Ranger, a functional watch with essential details

The Tudor Ranger is a historic model. Inspired by the Tudor Oyster Prince that equipped the members of the British North Greenland Expedition that took place from 1952 to 1954. The hands are well proportioned with a hint of red at the end of the second hand. It adds a bit of color. The satin brushed finish of the case and bracelet is really very well executed. The fine adjustment of the bracelet is also a real plus and its clasp is well finished. The Ranger caliber offers 70 hours of power reserve. It is also a real plus even if for me it is not a subject. A criticism... not really, the dial a little empty, no not even, its simplicity is also its strength

Discretion assured

Although COSC certified, no superfluous technical gibberish mentioned on the dial! Only the mention Ranger! A new caliber manufactured via Kenissi (factory created by Tudor) the MT5402 power reserve 70 H, with increased precision, -2 to +4 seconds of variation per day. The Tfit adjustment of the steel bracelet allows it to be adapted according to the ambient temperature ... Absolute sobriety. In the end I replaced the metal bracelet with a leather strap, which gives even more space and strength to the magnificent simplicity of the dial. The spade-shaped hour hand is much more balanced than the unsightly "snowflake" that have always put me off at Tudor. Found by chance when returning to a dealer still looking for an Explorer in 40, I consoled myself with this Ranger and it is a simple, non-statutory and very chic Daily!

Beautiful because Simple and Robust
