My review of the SERICA 5303 PLD

I just received my SERICA 5303 PLD, and it's a truly wonderful surprise. A genuine French diver's watch, born from a collaboration between SERICA and the French Navy's mine clearance divers, hence the acronym PLD ("Plongeurs de la Défense," or "Defense Divers"). This model was designed with them, for them, and it shows: every detail exudes functionality and robustness.

SERICA is a young French brand, founded in Paris in 2019, that is reviving the spirit of classic "tool watches": simple, reliable, timeless, and elegant. I really appreciate this philosophy: focusing on the essentials, with a genuine commitment to quality, but without the exorbitant prices of major brands.

This 5303 PLD is a real gem. Its 39mm case is perfectly proportioned, yet it feels even more compact on the wrist, making it incredibly comfortable. The ceramic bezel is superb, with its subtle magnetic feel and crisp click. The Milanese bracelet gives it a chic and versatile style, but I also wear it on a blue elastic strap, which lends it a sportier, more casual look.

I wasn't particularly used to this type of watch in my collection, but what really convinced me was the personal interaction. Every technical detail exudes mastery: the Chromalight-filled indexes and hands ensure perfect readability in the dark, the scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, and the Triplock crown guarantees water resistance even in the most extreme conditions.

The Black Bay 54 is the most representative example of the first TUDOR diver's watch, the reference 7922. The 37 mm case retains the same proportions as before, while benefiting from the TUDOR Manufacture Calibre MT5400 and water resistance to 200 m, technical feats.

HISTORICAL PROPORTIONS AND TECHNICAL PROWESS

The Black Bay 54 model is the model closest, aesthetically speaking, to the first TUDOR diver's watch, the reference 7922. Offered with a 37 mm case, it retains the general proportions of its source of inspiration while being equipped with the high-performance Manufacture Calibre MT5400 and water resistance to 200 m. A characteristic element and faithful to the aesthetics of the period, the unidirectional bezel does not have a minute graduation. However, the aesthetic details do not stop at the dimensions of the case and the bezel. The seconds hand, with its round luminous disc, evokes the appearance of the hand of the original model. The ergonomics have also evolved with a redesigned crown and bezel, but which nevertheless retain the historical spirit.

A DIVE INTO THE PAST

The spirit of Black Bay is part of the history of the brand. The Black Bay line has always highlighted iconic elements of old TUDOR diver’s watches, but the Black Bay 54 is perhaps the closest model to a specific historical piece created to date. The Oyster Prince Submariner reference 7922, one of the first modern diver’s watches, is a great source of inspiration since it is known to have been evaluated and then adopted by the French and American Navies as well as widely used by the pioneers of professional diving. The first versions of the reference 7922 featured a “small crown”, but not yet the red triangle at 12 o’clock, which would later become one of the brand’s signatures. These details gave it a refined and understated aesthetic. The Black Bay 54 is faithful to its model and takes up a large number of distinctive details. The minute hand, for example, in addition to adjusted proportions, is beveled at its base, as on the 1954 model. The second hand is as close as can be to the original. The profile of the bezel ring is also faithful to that of the reference 7922, as are the markings on its aluminum insert. The Black Bay 54 also features resolutely modern touches, such as a satin-sun dial and a “T-fit” clasp for a perfect fit and, of course, the Manufacture Caliber MT5400, a concentrate of high-performance watchmaking technology.

There are watches that go beyond their utilitarian function to become legendary. The Rolex GMT-Master II is one of them: a watch born in the sky, designed for pilots, adopted by travelers, and now reinvented in a new and elegant version, the “Bruce Wayne,” with its black and gray ceramic bezel.

A watch born to conquer the skies ✈️

The story of the GMT-Master begins in 1955. At that time, intercontinental flights were booming with the growth of the American airline Pan American World Airways (Pan Am). Since 1950, when TUDOR created one of the first modern professional diving watches, the brand has become the official supplier to the French Navy. With the Pelagos FXD model, with its fixed, very robust watch case lugs, TUDOR is renewing this historic collaboration.

TUDOR PELAGOS FXD 

I let myself be tempted by this Pelagos FXD, while I already own the classic Pelagos (which I will review one of these days). 
They share the lightness of the titanium material, the reliability and power reserve (70 hours) of the automatic movement, the dominant blue, and the incredible quality of the luminova. 
But it is really not the same watch! 
The blue of the FXD is less "artificial" than its big sister, a slightly deeper navy blue, more discreet, marrying very well with the gray of the titanium. 
No date, which is for me an advantage in terms of sobriety and balance. 
The bezel is bi-directional, which is very practical (especially for combat swimmers!). 
And above all the lugs are fixed, no pumps risking breaking. 
This of course limits the choice of strap (it's not really a Nato that comes with the watch, but it's very comfortable and well designed), and therefore this watch is intended more for everyday, sports, vacation, casual use, than for dress use.
Nice reminder on the case back of the partnership with the French Navy (and the vintage).
The quality of the luminova is such that you can easily read the time at the end of the night.
The watch is very pleasant to wear, between the lightness of the titanium and the possibility of adapting in 2 seconds the imitation Nato strap with velcro.
It's certainly a fairly recent purchase, but I have a hard time leaving it, and I feel that it will accompany me all summer and much more.
Another success from Tudor. We always wonder why pay double and wait 2 years for the cousin to the crown...

A surprisingly practical watch, a very readable dial both day and night with its bi-directional bezel that can be used every day for daily activities.
Having served in the Navy, having the FXD Pelages Marine Nationale is a real tribute and pleasure and a strong emotion every time I wear it.

The perfect marine watch

Perfect readability, a sturdy and lightweight watch, a crazy charm… a history and military specifications. I haven’t taken it off for 6 months. It’s sublime. I was lucky enough to be able to acquire it at a Tudor pop-up store on vacation. I tried it on and bought it straight away. A favorite.

Hypnotic Blue

This watch is very comfortable to wear on the 2 bracelets provided with the purchase and particularly on the scratch bracelet. For sports, swimming, this is the watch I wear. The fixed lugs (FXD) are one of the reasons that guided me towards this purchase. It really stands out from the usual Tudor watches and in particular from the other Pelagos and BB58 that I see on everyone's wrists.

Simple, well designed watch.

When my AD offered me this watch, I immediately liked it because of its simplicity and the sobriety of the watch. For this diver, no mirror polish on the case and bracelet that make watches too flashy and too showy. No, a simple and effective design with a beautiful precise movement, I immediately liked this watch.
