Omega and Swatch surprised the watchmaking world by collaborating on theMoonSwatchReleased in early 2022, this unexpected partnership between a high-end luxury brand and a playful, colorful brand created a buzz and quickly became THE product everyone was talking about worldwide.Swatch MoonSwatch was inspired by the iconic design of the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch and is available in 11 variations representing different planets, adding a touch of the Swatch spirit to the design.
This collaboration had significant implications for both brands. For Swatch, it was an opportunity to revive its declining popularity in a market dominated by smartphones and smartwatches, particularly the Apple Watch. Swatch had tried various strategies, such as artist series and limited editions, but had struggled to regain its former prominence. By leveraging the marketable and recognizable design of the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch, Swatch aimed to attract attention and boost brand sales.
For its part, Omega faced the challenge of keeping pace with its competitor, Rolex. Although it had a loyal customer base, Omega generated less overall interest compared to Rolex. The brand had made efforts to position itself in the high-end segment, improve movement technology, and highlight its heritage models. However, the postponement of major partnerships due to COVID, such as the Olympic Games and James Bond, undoubtedly had a negative impact on sales. To refocus attention on the brand, Omega adopted a bold approach with the Swatch MoonSwatch yy offering consumers the opportunity to own a Speedmaster-inspired watch at an affordable price, Omega aimed to create desire and aspiration for their higher-end models.
The outer box matches the watch's color and includes information about the corresponding planet or astronomical body. Inside, the display box elegantly presented the watch and included documents showcasing the entire model range. However, some "experts" found the quality of the inner box to be unsatisfactory.
Have customers forgotten that this Mooswatch was initially marketed at €250, which is €50 more than a standard Swatch chronograph?
The case design was one of the strong points of the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch by faithfully reproducing the design of the Speedy. It allowed consumers to experience the Moonwatch without the high price tag. The 42mm diameter case, including the asymmetrical side, offered optimal comfort on the wrist. The 90-point marking on the tachymeter bezel and the engraved "S" in the center of the crystal faithfully reproduced the original design. Although the case back differed from that of the traditional Speedmaster, displaying the Swatch logo and model details, it cleverly incorporated a clear image of the planets on the battery cover, as seen on the Moonwatch. Mission To Venus, Mission To Mars, Mission To Saturn or Mission On Earth.
The MoonSwatch is made of BioCeramic, a material advertised as being composed of one-third bio-based plastic and two-thirds ceramic. Although this material resembles plastic, it is lightweight, allows for vibrant colors, and preserves the watch's contours well. In use, however, this material appears to be just as fragile as other Swatch models.
The dial design remained faithful to that of the Moonwatch, with a reorganization of the subdials due to the use of the Swatch ETA quartz movement instead of the Omega Co-Axial movement. The inscriptions "Speedmaster" MoonSwatch" appeared below the upper subdials, creating visual balance. The 1/3-second markers on the dial, while unusable on a quartz watch, paid homage to the Moonwatch. The hour markers consisted of small rectangles filled with luminescent material, and the two classic dots were present at 12 o'clock.
Its lightness and comfortable fit on the wrist surprised those expecting a more imposing presence, but this is entirely logical given that it's a Swatch! The Speedmaster's design has captivated over a million customers with its clean lines, choice of typography, and aesthetically pleasing hands. The Velcro strap offers a customizable fit and blends seamlessly into the watch's overall weight, making it almost imperceptible for everyday wear. However, in practice, this strap, adorned with the Omega logo—perhaps a bit over the top—doesn't seem to be the most comfortable, judging by the numerous customer reviews shared online.
In early 2024, Swatch continued its lineup with the Moonswatch Mission To The Moonphase Full Moon in a brilliant white and an all-black version called New Moon. These two latest iterations were launched with great fanfare, reminiscent of the original release.
The 11 references Swatch Moonswatch like the Moonswatch Mission To Jupiter, Moonswatch To Uranus or Moonswatch Mission To The Moon are offered at a price of €260 in Swatch stores, to be clearly distinguished from Swatch distributors who do not sell it.
A masterstroke in terms of marketing and undoubtedly a seed planted in the hearts of younger enthusiasts. Time will tell if it takes root at Swatch or Omega! There's no doubt this innovation has given the Swatch Group wings, with the launch in 2023 of a new collaboration with... Swatch Scuba Fifty Fathoms in collaboration with Blancpain, then of the Royal Pop collaboration with Audemars Piguet in 2026.
