The Sinn U50, launched in 2020, translates the technical and aesthetic principles of the celebrated U1 diver into a substantially more compact and wearable format. Its German Submarine Steel case measures 41 mm in diameter, approximately 11.2 mm thick and 47 mm from lug to lug while retaining independently certified water and pressure resistance to 500 metres. The watch uses a captive diving bezel, screw-down crown positioned at 4 o’clock, sapphire crystal, immediately legible dial and automatic Sellita SW300-1 movement. Three principal interpretations are available from launch: the steel U50, U50 SDR with black bezel and fully black U50 S. The family subsequently expands through limited editions, coloured dials and especially the oil-filled U50 HYDRO branch, which reaches 5,000 metres but necessarily uses a quartz movement.
The U50 directly adopts the visual language of Sinn’s U-series divers: matte-black dial, large geometric hour markers, substantial white hands and strongly contrasting red accents. There is almost no decorative element without a function. The design of the U50 is based on immediate readability rather than any desire to evoke a historical diving watch. This absence of nostalgia matters: unlike many contemporary divers inspired by the 1950s or 1960s, the U50 appears entirely conceived as a modern instrument.
The minute hand is deliberately broad and its form instantly distinguishes it from the hour hand. The red seconds hand contains a luminous section that allows the wearer to check that the watch is running, while the indexes also receive luminous material. The visual hierarchy prioritises the minute because this is the essential indication when a bezel is used to monitor dive time. The dial therefore does not pursue perfect symmetry but rather efficient reading under difficult conditions.
The date window at 3 o’clock is unusually discreet. A dark date disc prevents a large white opening from interrupting the black dial. The function remains practical for daily wear without becoming the centre of the display. Sinn therefore integrates a date without significantly altering the instrument character of the dial. Someone preferring a completely calendar-free diver nevertheless needs to accept that the date forms part of the mechanical U50 architecture.
The bezel uses a sixty-minute scale with large numerals at five-minute intervals and red accents across the first positions. Its principal marker is luminous. The typography and shapes directly continue the recognisable design of the U1, U2 and UX divers. The strong bezel identity makes a Sinn U-series watch recognisable from several metres away without needing to read the logo. It is one of the most consistent signatures in the company’s modern production.
The U50 B introduced in 2025 demonstrates that the architecture also works with a matte-blue dial. Large white indexes and hands remain unchanged in principle, preserving the contrast expected from a certified diving watch. Moving to blue changes the personality without changing the functional hierarchy of the dial. It provides a less austere alternative for an owner who appreciates the capabilities of the U50 without necessarily wanting its most traditional black-and-red aesthetic.
Special editions demonstrate even more clearly how flexible the design can be. Mother-of-pearl, DS decorative grinding, fully luminous surfaces and blue-to-black gradients alter the dial without changing its underlying organisation. The success of these variations lies in preserving functional identity even when the dial becomes considerably more expressive. The U50 can consequently acquire a collectible dimension without losing the immediately recognisable appearance of a Sinn instrument.
The principal ergonomic strength of the U50 lies in its proportions. At 41 mm in diameter, approximately 11.2 mm thick and 47 mm long, it is substantially more compact than the 44 mm U1 from which it draws inspiration. Lug width is 20 mm. A thickness close to 11 mm is especially remarkable for a mechanical diver certified to 500 metres. The watch therefore passes more easily under a sleeve and is much less bulky than most divers offering comparable pressure resistance.
The case and crown are manufactured from German Submarine Steel. Sinn selects it for its mechanical strength, non-magnetic qualities and especially high resistance to seawater. Bead blasting eliminates large reflective surfaces and reinforces the functional appearance. Submarine Steel is not used as a decorative marketing device but for properties directly coherent with a watch intended for a marine environment. It also gives the case a slightly different grey appearance from conventional highly polished watchmaking steel.
TEGIMENT does not correspond to a conventional coating applied over the metal. Sinn hardens the surface zone of the material itself in order to create substantially greater scratch resistance than untreated steel. On the standard U50, the bezel systematically receives this technology and certain configurations extend it to the case. TEGIMENT is especially relevant on the bezel because this is one of the areas most exposed to impacts and friction. It obviously cannot make a watch impossible to mark, but it significantly reduces ordinary wear.
SDR and S versions add a black layer over a previously hardened surface. Sinn explains that its Black Hard Coating sits on a TEGIMENT foundation in order to reduce the problems that can occur when a hard coating is placed over a much softer substrate. The hardened base is essential to the behaviour of the black coating when the watch experiences impacts or scratching. The U50 SDR limits black treatment to the bezel, whereas the U50 S extends the appearance across the case.
The bezel is described as captive because it is not simply held by friction as on many diving watches. Its construction is intended to prevent it from being torn away during a severe impact. It rotates only counter-clockwise and uses minute-by-minute indexing. The captive construction directly addresses the risk of losing a bezel that is being used to monitor dive time. It is a characteristic example of the way Sinn turns an apparently ordinary component into a safety feature.
The screw-down crown is positioned at 4 o’clock rather than 3. This moves it away from the back of the hand when the wrist flexes and also allows relatively compact protective shoulders. The 4 o’clock position significantly improves ergonomics on a watch intended to be worn during physical activity. It also contributes to the characteristic U50 silhouette without deliberately drawing attention to itself.
The sapphire crystal is anti-reflective on both sides and the caseback is screwed down. The watch is also resistant to low pressure, a characteristic Sinn verifies across several professional instruments. The complete case is therefore developed as a protection system rather than simply an enclosure around the movement. This philosophy helps explain why the back remains solid despite the potential appeal of displaying the mechanical calibre.
Sinn does not simply advertise a theoretical depth rating. The U50 series is certified by DNV for pressure resistance corresponding to 500 metres, or 50 bar. Its construction also complies with the technical requirements of German diving-watch standard DIN 8306. The pressure rating stated by Sinn is therefore verified by an independent organisation rather than relying solely on manufacturer testing. This approach forms part of the brand’s long-standing philosophy for watches intended for professional use.
The U50 also fulfils the waterproofing requirements of DIN 8310 and undergoes tests based on European standards EN 250 and EN 14143 concerning diving equipment. These standards were not originally written for watches, so the test procedures have to be adapted. Sinn consequently treats the diving watch as a genuine safety component that can be evaluated using a philosophy comparable with other pieces of diving equipment. Certification notably considers pressure resistance, temperatures and functionality.
This process explains why the reduced dimensions of the U50 are especially interesting. Sinn has not simply reduced the diameter of the U1 while accepting a lower level of capability than expected from a professional watch. Five hundred metres remains far beyond the requirements of conventional recreational diving. The U50 seeks to demonstrate that a serious diving watch does not need to be massive in order to withstand substantial pressure. Its thickness is therefore as much an engineering achievement as an ergonomic feature.
The watch can be ordered on solid steel, silicone, textile or leather depending on configuration and production period. For genuine diving use, steel and silicone are the most coherent choices. Modern Sinn folding clasps can include adjustment systems suited to changes in wrist circumference. Bracelet choice changes the mass and wearing sensation of an otherwise technically identical U50 very significantly. Silicone reinforces the dedicated diving-instrument character whereas steel broadens everyday versatility.
The steel bracelet uses solid links and bead-blasted finishing matched to the case. Black variations can receive the treatment appropriate to the U50 S configuration. Drilled lugs on many examples also simplify removal. Ease of strap replacement suits a watch capable of moving between daily wear and more specialised aquatic activity. It avoids forcing the owner to treat one configuration as permanent.
As with every diver, original certification does not eliminate the need for maintenance. Gaskets age, crowns are repeatedly operated and impacts can influence component integrity. A U50 genuinely used underwater should undergo periodic pressure testing despite its particularly robust design. The 500-metre specification should not be understood as a permanent capability independent of the actual condition of the individual watch.
The mechanical U50 uses the automatic Sellita SW300-1. The movement operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour, or 4 Hz, contains 25 jewels and provides both manual winding and hacking seconds during time setting. It also displays the date. The SW300-1 is selected partly for its low thickness, which directly contributes to the unusually slim profile of the U50. It also uses a widely distributed architecture familiar to servicing workshops, an important advantage for a tool watch intended for long-term use.
At launch in 2020, commercial specifications for the SW300-1 fitted to the U50 stated approximately 38 hours of power reserve. More recent Sinn documents continue to confirm the SW300-1 but do not always state a specific reserve duration. Power reserve should therefore be connected to the actual movement generation rather than automatically attributed to every U50 produced since 2020. This distinction is especially relevant on the pre-owned market covering several production years.
The calibre is declared anti-magnetic according to DIN 8309. This does not turn the U50 into a watch designed for exceptionally intense magnetic fields but provides resistance corresponding to the standard. Magnetic resistance completes the instrument logic without requiring a large inner cage that would increase case thickness. The solid back also contributes to the general robustness of the construction.
In 2024, Sinn creates the U50 HYDRO, which retains the general 41 mm format but completely fills the interior of the case with a transparent liquid. Movement, dial and hands operate directly within this fluid. The liquid filling virtually eliminates internal reflection under water and allows the display to remain readable even from extremely oblique angles. It also prevents fogging because humid air is removed from the case.
Because the liquid is practically incompressible, the U50 HYDRO can achieve a spectacular certified pressure resistance of 5,000 metres, or 500 bar. DNV certifies this figure. Thickness remains around 11.8 mm, only slightly greater than the mechanical model. HYDRO technology therefore multiplies certified depth by ten without turning the U50 into a dramatically thicker case. It is one of the clearest demonstrations of Sinn’s engineering-led approach.
The technology does, however, rule out a conventional mechanical movement. A balance wheel could not oscillate normally in fluid because of the damping resistance. Sinn therefore necessarily uses a quartz movement powered by a lithium battery and fitted with an end-of-life indication. The U50 HYDRO is not simply a mechanical U50 made more water-resistant but a fundamentally different horological architecture. Choosing between the two therefore depends as much on the desired relationship with the movement as on depth capability.
The stated operating range for the U50 HYDRO extends from –20 °C to +60 °C. U50 HYDRO, HYDRO SDR and HYDRO S repeat the three principal family finishes: steel, black bezel and black case. The HYDRO branch deliberately preserves the visual vocabulary of the U50 so that the technical revolution remains almost invisible on the wrist. Only the HYDRO wording and selected details immediately distinguish it from its mechanical sister.
(2020) Sinn U50 First Compact Mechanical Diver in the Series:
The Sinn U50 is introduced in spring 2020 as a substantially more compact alternative to the 44 mm U1. Its German Submarine Steel case measures 41 mm, approximately 11.2 mm thick and 47 mm from lug to lug. Water and pressure resistance are certified to 500 metres by DNV. The captive bezel receives TEGIMENT treatment, the screw-down crown sits at 4 o’clock and the sapphire crystal is anti-reflective. Automatic Sellita SW300-1 operates at 4 Hz with date, manual winding and hacking seconds. From launch, Sinn offers the steel U50, the U50 SDR with black-coated bezel and the fully black U50 S on a TEGIMENT foundation.
(2021) Sinn U50 S Mother-of-Pearl Expressive Mother-of-Pearl Edition:
The Sinn U50 S Mother-of-Pearl demonstrates as early as 2021 that the U50 platform can move beyond a strictly black, white and red visual language without abandoning its professional specification. The 41 mm case remains German Submarine Steel, TEGIMENT treated and covered with Sinn’s black hard coating. A mother-of-pearl dial, however, introduces blue, green and violet reflections that are highly unusual on such a functional diver. The certified 500-metre capability, captive bezel and mechanical movement remain aligned with the family. This edition begins a sequence of limited U50 variations in which Sinn uses the dial as a more expressive surface while preserving the underlying technical architecture.
(2023) Sinn U50 DS Decorative Grinding Limited to 1,000 Pieces:
The Sinn U50 DS is presented in February 2023 and limited to 1,000 examples. Its dial receives decorative grinding that produces an irregular surface, meaning individual watches show slightly different visual patterns. The case retains the 41 mm diameter and approximately 11.2 mm thickness of the standard mechanical model, while both case and bezel receive TEGIMENT treatment. Water resistance remains certified to 500 metres. The grey-brown dial changes substantially according to the light and gives the watch a very different presence from the traditional matte-black model. The DS therefore shows how Sinn can introduce an almost artisanal visual dimension into a watch whose construction remains entirely driven by robustness and diving requirements.
(2024) Sinn U50 HYDRO Move to Oil Filling and 5,000 Metres:
The Sinn U50 HYDRO brings Sinn’s established HYDRO technology into the compact 41 mm format. Its German Submarine Steel case is filled with a transparent liquid in which movement, dial and hands are immersed. This construction virtually eliminates underwater reflections, prevents fogging and, because the liquid cannot meaningfully be compressed, permits certified pressure resistance to 5,000 metres or 500 bar. Thickness remains around 11.8 mm. The movement necessarily becomes quartz because a mechanical balance wheel cannot oscillate normally in the fluid. U50 HYDRO, HYDRO SDR and HYDRO S respectively reproduce the steel, black-bezel and black-case philosophies of the mechanical family.
(2025) Sinn U50 B New Blue-Dial Interpretation:
The Sinn U50 B joins the regular collection in 2025 with a matte-blue dial paired with the familiar 41 mm German Submarine Steel case. Large white markers and luminous hands preserve the characteristic legibility of the series while the red seconds-hand and bezel accents remain. The watch continues to use the automatic Sellita SW300-1, anti-reflective sapphire, screw-down crown at 4 o’clock and captive TEGIMENT-treated bezel. Water resistance remains certified to 500 metres. This model matters because blue is no longer merely a special-edition feature but becomes a permanent alternative to the historical black dial of the U50.
(2026) Sinn U50 S BS Blue-Black Gradient Limited to 500 Pieces:
The Sinn U50 S BS is announced in February 2026 and limited to 500 examples. It combines a 41 mm German Submarine Steel case with TEGIMENT and Black Hard Coating with a dial that transitions from blue into black. Captive bezel, 4 o’clock screw-down crown, sapphire crystal and DNV certification to 500 metres remain consistent with the U50 philosophy. The movement is the automatic 25-jewel SW300-1 running at 28,800 vibrations per hour. The edition continues the strategy of special black U50 models by using the dial to create collector identity while preserving the resistance and certification of the regular professional diving watch.
The standard U50 is probably the most coherent entry into the family. It leaves the Submarine Steel visible, preserves the historical black, white and red aesthetic and avoids the cosmetic concern of wearing a dark coating. The steel U50 particularly suits someone wanting a robust, slim mechanical diver that remains easy to wear every day. Its 41 mm diameter and 47 mm length work on a wide range of wrists.
The U50 SDR is an excellent compromise for someone who likes a black bezel but wants to retain the natural steel case. Black Hard Coating is applied over a TEGIMENT base while the middle case remains bead blasted. The SDR visually emphasises dial and bezel without turning the complete watch into a black object. It also creates stronger contrast between the different components of the case.
The U50 S provides a more stealthy and contemporary presence. Black case and bezel give greater visual importance to the white markers and red accents. The treatment remains technically sophisticated, although any black watch deserves some protection from very severe impacts. The U50 S should primarily be selected for its appearance because its diving performance remains identical to the standard mechanical U50. Limited editions then add greater collectibility through their specific dials.
The U50 HYDRO follows a radically different philosophy. Its 5,000-metre capability and underwater readability at virtually every angle are technically impressive, but it replaces mechanical watchmaking with quartz. The HYDRO is the more rational choice for someone prioritising diving performance and Sinn technology over the pleasure of an automatic movement. Servicing also requires specific handling of the liquid-filled case by a competent service centre.
Whichever model is chosen, the condition of bezel, crown, seals and bracelet deserves inspection on a pre-owned watch, and old certification does not replace a recent pressure test. A strong maintenance history matters more than the complete absence of marks on a diving watch designed to be genuinely used. Other customers’ opinions are essential.
The Sinn U50 is aimed at enthusiasts looking for a genuinely modern and technical diving watch without accepting the bulk often associated with pieces capable of withstanding substantial pressure. Its 41 mm case, approximately 11 mm profile, German Submarine Steel, captive bezel and 500-metre certification create a particularly uncommon balance between comfort and robustness. SDR and S versions principally change the appearance, special dials add a collectible dimension, and the HYDRO branch pushes the engineering concept to 5,000 metres at the cost of abandoning a mechanical movement. The principal limitations are comparatively conventional power reserve on early mechanical U50 watches and an extremely instrumental appearance that will not appeal to someone seeking a vintage-inspired or luxurious diver.
To compare real-world comfort, TEGIMENT durability, accuracy, bezel ergonomics and everyday behaviour of the different bracelets, Dialicious customer reviews provide a particularly useful complement.
