The dress watch, how to define it? A brand or model that conveys prestige, subtle class and elegance? In this case, this Mido will never reach the aura of Jeager Le Coultre or Patek Philippe. Without precious metals, it is impossible to achieve a form of radiant value. Despite the warm Latin noun "Baroncelli", this watch cannot really generate the emotion that befits the demands of the status watch. But if we compare the prices and the services provided, this watch can be likened to a Cinderella at the beginning of a tale. Of course, the dress is not flamboyant, but the depth and identity can endure. This Mido Baroncelli in fact only asks to be sublimated and supported by the charisma of the wearer. And yes, the watch can shine and completely overshadow its wearer if the personality of the owner is not up to the good. Its sleek "Bauhaus" style design does not help it to exude as much charm as other warmer styles. But it does give it extreme readability and glacial elegance in the noble sense of the term with the marriage of white, metal and a fine royal blue hand. This simplicity requires a finish on the dial of the highest standard, and it is without hesitation that I grant it a level largely up to its financial weight. The date would have still deserved to be positioned at 6 o'clock so as not to break the symmetry. Just like the terms "automatic" and "heritage" which are too much, passable. An elaborate bracelet, sparkling in the sun, I find it sublime, but perhaps it clashes a little with the dial. A contrast between simplicity and "complexity" which perhaps does not marry perfectly. Let's talk about the heart of our "poor" Cinderella. A lively movement, 4Hz, a more jerky hand would have been unworthy. A heart that beats wildly, no delay, it flies faster than time, which pleases me because it is easier to adjust when I want. But the main reason for my purchase is undoubtedly its slender and thin case (7.3mm). In a world abandoned to ostentation and gluttony in all its forms, to excess weight and oversized watches for unsuitable wrists... this steel dress created by Mido is the right answer to the impossibility (for the moment) of offering myself one of the superb creations of a house such as Jaeger Le Coultre, to name but one. The Baroncelli would have gained in perfection with a smaller diameter. Small additional note, I appreciate the metal worked in a lively and sharp way, but for once, this bracelet is too noticeable when worn and does not know how to (sometimes) be forgotten. Like an overly desirable but invasive mistress that you can't seem to leave (is leather a solution?). This watch doesn't generate emotion in me and reminds me that it's up to me to generate emotion during my interactions. I like wearing it because I haven't found anything as elegant and affordable to slip under the sleeve of a very fitted shirt. A watch made to accompany a formal suit because it won't impose itself by awkwardly embedding itself between your sleeve and your wrist. (Is robustness a question to be addressed for this type of watch with non-existent water resistance, which requires delicacy to wear so as not to scratch the dress and if the movement works and is it sufficiently lively and precise?)

Is it still a watch for military use?

Less than a month after purchase (no shock): Crown and its winding stem detach from the case. Fast after-sales service and repair under warranty, nothing to say.
About 6 months later, I dropped it on tiles. It works but the tritium tube index (at 11 o'clock) comes off and wanders around on the dial.
A few days or weeks later, the crown and its stem come out of the case again.
I dropped a Rolex Date Just, the latter completely absorbed the shock, even though that is not its purpose.

How to start this review while trying to remain as objective as possible. If it is not mission impossible, it turns out to be complicated.

Positive: 
- An exceptional rubber strap, both in terms of its cut, its flexibility, its comfort, its softness, its matte color, its lightness and still today... which still smells of vanilla. 
- A 120-click bezel without play, with precise and enjoyable crackles for the ears. An original notched rim, excellent aggressive grip and pleasant toothed wheel design. (too bad its triangle pointer is in super luminova and not in tritium) 
- I love tritium, much more than any other luminescent technology. 
- the texture of the crown provides an exceptional grip and its size makes its handling comfortable and easy. 
- I don't like divers, but this watch has all the characteristics (ISO6425) but without the design! I like its military/efficient/modern look much more. 
- Really good finishes. 

The design is efficient and classic, which makes it ergonomic as well as pleasant to the eye. But precisely, without originality. The dial is too visually loaded, but the essential is easy to read, the superfluous and reduced in size, less prominent. 

Negative:
- A functional date but still integrated in a clumsy way.
- Unbalanced on the wrist (an ultra light bracelet and a really massive/dense case).
- Robustness unworthy of the image and history that the brand conveys.
- Not very precise, it lost 5 seconds of memory per day. For some it is within the limits, but for me, Swiss, these days, it is not acceptable. It is much easier to correct the time when a watch is fast than when it is slow.
- Too thick

Without the problem of robustness, solidity, reliability, this watch would have been one of the rare ones in my eyes to come close to a justifiable price.
Sooner or later I will have it repaired, because I love it enormously visually, I loved handling it. I would take much better care of her, since she is not what she claims to be.

Is it still a watch for military use?

For contemporary dimensions, the case is good, below what is practiced. But the past has already done much better, more contained. The readability is good if we compare to other chronographs, but it remains perfectible, especially if we could better differentiate the time from its chronograph function, the reading would be more instinctive. The price is disproportionate as the model has been amortized for so many decades. In my eyes, the biggest flaw. The second biggest flaw for me, especially given the dimensions of the case and theoretically the know-how of the manufacturer, is the water resistance which has never been revised upwards. So little audacity and courage, it's sad. Small note, the robustness is difficult to note because users take very good care of it and few models have been mistreated. Let's not forget that the legendary G-Shock which has suffered all the torture tests possible and imaginable is supposed to represent a little the paroxysm of robustness.

Biblical proportions, desirable but improvable, expensive.

My Seed (lunar)

For my 50th birthday, I wanted a special watch so I decided to go with an Omega Moonwatch. The recently discontinued model (caliber 1861) was in production for over 20+ years so a large number of them is out there.  The most recent iteration (caliber 3861), with its new bracelet, became too dressy for my liking and lost its tool watch looks.  It’s like comparing a Rolex on Oyster vs Jubilee….  The Omega “Tintin” was produced for only 2 years so it’s empirically rare.  I like the “If you know, you know” factor! 

To the Moon and back

I was looking for THE watch, the one I would wear every day, robust, reliable, elegant, historic, waterproof, prestigious, the watch of my dreams. For me it ticks all the boxes.

This iteration of the Speed, the 3861 combines modernity and the excellence of a cutting-edge movement, with classic and timeless charm, especially with the hesalite glass. I chose this model because I am a carpenter, I only wear it every day, I swim with it in summer, I bathe my daughters with it, it lives with me. The steel back with the Omega seahorse looks more like a toolwatch I think, with the all-brushed bracelet. And the hesalite brings so much depth to the dial, the play of light, the distortion, the dome, with this step dial and the sub-dials that add so much relief. A little polywatch once a year, and off we go again! I am therefore less afraid of scratching the hesalite than a sapphire! I find that it gives it a real extra soul. This is the only watch that offers that in the current landscape. And we are talking about a hand-wound chronograph, which for me is already part of an approach with an emotional connection to this watch.

I find the new chronograph hand thinner, more elegant, the railway more airy and precise in relation to the frequency of the movement, the balance of the baton indexes and the readability are incredible.

I don't have a big wrist, but the 42 mm don't feel it at all. It is the size of a 40 mm, that's the genius of Omega, with these Lyre lugs, the refined bracelet, the reduced lug-to-lug distance...

The 3861 is very precise, it only advances 0.2s per day. Anti-magnetic, waterproof, the METAS certification reassures me, and the co-axial movement is exceptional. 

Its history is obviously incredible, but it is not only about the conquest of space. It has also experienced polar and Antarctic expeditions, and that is what I like. 

To conclude, this speed is for me the ultimate watch, the watch of a lifetime. It is a dreamer's watch.

A legendary watch, my watch

Is it still necessary to add an additional opinion on the Speedmaster? I'll risk it anyway. A watch is a story, a movement, and a design. And there, nothing to complain about, the three elements are combined. Yes, Omega plays the marketing of the "first watch on the Moon" to the fullest. But it still works, right? Then there is this design, what readability, what balance. I don't know why some aficionados go crazy with this DON (dot over 90) but it is there. And finally, this co-axial caliber is still exceptional. I like the rustic side of the manual winding. It allows you to have a more intimate connection with your watch (well, you get what I mean).
And what I also like about my Speed is that you can wear it with a suit as well as on a golf course or in the evening. And when you want to change your look, everything suits it: NATO in all colors, black or brown leather.

Indispensable

…it might be this one… I have a special affection for Omega, which I consider to be a truly exciting manufacturer with extraordinary collections. The Speed Master is the ultimate chronometer with such a recognizable design that I never get tired of. And much less flashy than the recent Daytos. The 2021 model with the 3861 module is great and the strap is incredibly comfortable! For me it’s a must-have. Right now I’m wearing it on a NATO strap, it gives it a great vintage style.
