The Omega Speedmaster 125, launched in 1973, was created to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Omega, founded by Louis Brandt in 1848. Officially presented during the worldwide congress organised by Omega in Switzerland in June 1973, it represents one of the most technically and visually ambitious Speedmasters of its period. Its automatic calibre 1041 is a chronometer-certified development of calibre 1040 used notably in the Speedmaster Mark III and Mark IV.
It made the Speedmaster 125 the first wristwatch to combine an automatic chronograph with official chronometer certification. Its particularly substantial stainless-steel case measures approximately 42 mm wide, 51 mm long and 15 mm thick, while its integrated metal bracelet directly extends the case. The black dial displays a date, a 24-hour indicator and a chronograph whose minutes are shown by a large central hand. Long presented as a limited edition of 2,000 pieces, the Speedmaster 125 was actually produced in greater numbers, with research carried out using the Omega archives showing production extending from 1973 until at least 1977.
The Speedmaster 125 looks almost unlike any Speedmaster produced before it. Omega builds the watch around a substantial rectangular structure with rounded corners, inside which sits a circular module containing the movement, dial and crystal. The bracelet integrates directly into the sides of the case and further strengthens the impression of a solid block of metal. The dial nevertheless remains highly functional: date at 3 o’clock, 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock and running seconds combined with a 24-hour indication at 9 o’clock. Two central hands are used for the chronograph, one measuring seconds and the other elapsed minutes up to 60 minutes. This central minute hand is one of the most characteristic functional features of the Speedmaster 125. The tachymeter scale is positioned beneath the mineral crystal rather than on an external bezel, a solution already used on certain Speedmaster Mark models. The black dial is animated by white indications and touches of colour, while the applied Omega logo, name and 125 number provide greater visual depth. Despite the quantity of information displayed, the clear separation of functions makes the watch relatively intuitive to read once its architecture is understood.
At approximately 42 mm wide, 51 mm long and 15 mm thick, the Speedmaster 125 is large even by current standards. Its weight approaches 180 grams with a complete steel bracelet, an especially unusual figure for a watch launched in the early 1970s. The case uses a two-part construction: a strongly brushed outer case receives a round inner module containing the movement, dial, crown, pushers and crystal. This architecture notably allows the module to be removed without treating the entire watch as a conventional one-piece case. The wrist experience is influenced more strongly by the 51 mm length and weight than by the nominal 42 mm width. The original 1221/212 bracelet forms an essential part of the design, with broad horizontal links that gradually taper towards the clasp. Its width reaches approximately 26 mm where it meets the case before narrowing considerably towards the buckle. Omega subsequently used the 1225/212 as a replacement bracelet and later introduced additional service references. The unusual case geometry makes fitting a conventional leather strap far more difficult than on a classical Speedmaster. On a vintage example, the presence of a complete bracelet with sufficient length is therefore particularly important.
Omega calibre 1041 is directly derived from the Lemania 1340 family and Omega calibre 1040 introduced shortly beforehand. It operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides approximately 40 to 44 hours of power reserve depending on documentation and movement condition. It controls the hours, minutes, running seconds, date, 24-hour indication and chronograph. Elapsed chronograph seconds are displayed by a conventional large central hand, while a second central hand totals the minutes; elapsed hours are recorded in the subdial positioned at 6 o’clock. The chronometer certification of calibre 1041 makes the Speedmaster 125 the first officially certified chronometer automatic chronograph. Omega notably adapted the movement to allow regulation in several positions and at different temperatures. Early movements were certified within the Swiss chronometer-control system of the period before the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres progressively centralised these procedures from 1973 onwards. The 1041 was used only in the Speedmaster 125, strengthening its historical appeal but potentially making certain repairs more difficult today. Servicing should be entrusted to a watchmaker familiar with this movement family, particularly to correctly synchronise the two large central hands and chronograph totalisers.
(1971) Omega Speedmaster Mark III Black Automatic:
The Mark III forms the mechanical starting point for the future Speedmaster 125. The Omega Speedmaster Mark III ST 176.0002 is the first Speedmaster equipped with an automatic chronograph and introduces calibre 1040 derived from the Lemania 1340. Its display directly anticipates that of the 125 with a date at 3 o’clock, 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock, running seconds combined with a 24-hour indicator at 9 o’clock and a central hand totalling chronograph minutes. The stainless-steel case adopts a tall “pilot line” construction measuring approximately 41 mm wide and more than 50 mm long, with a mineral crystal and tachymeter scale protected beneath it. Black, blue and grey dials are notably documented. The main mechanical difference from the future Speedmaster 125 lies in the absence of chronometer certification: calibre 1040 provides the foundation that Omega would modify and regulate more precisely to create calibre 1041.

The standard configuration defines the Speedmaster 125 and remains the version most commonly encountered today. The Omega Speedmaster 125 ST 378.0801 has a stainless-steel outer case measuring approximately 42 x 51 mm and 15 mm thick. Its black dial receives luminous markers, a date at 3 o’clock, a 12-hour totaliser at 6 o’clock and running seconds combined with a 24-hour indicator at 9 o’clock. The white central hand measures chronograph seconds while a second central hand, easily identified by its shape, totals the minutes. (1973) Omega Speedmaster 125 Pulsometer Black:
Certain Speedmaster 125 watches are documented with a crystal carrying a pulsometer scale instead of the conventional tachymeter. The Omega Speedmaster 125 ST 378.0801 Puls retains exactly the same stainless-steel case, black dial, automatic calibre 1041 and chronograph architecture as the standard version. The scale positioned beneath the crystal is instead designed to facilitate measurement of heart rate after counting a specified number of pulses. This configuration is considerably less common than the traditional tachymeter and should be examined carefully when buying because crystals may have been replaced during services carried out since the 1970s. The calibre retains its chronometer certification, 28,800-vibration-per-hour frequency and date, 24-hour indication and chronograph functions. The integrated 1221/212 bracelet remains the most coherent configuration. The presence of an authentic and correctly fitted pulsometer scale adds a further dimension to a Speedmaster that is already highly unusual.
(1973) Omega Speedmaster 125 Telemeter Black:
Another rare configuration uses a telemeter scale beneath the crystal. The Omega Speedmaster 125 ST 378.0801 Tele retains the substantial 42 x 51 mm case, black dial, automatic 1041 movement and integrated bracelet of the traditional version. The telemeter function can theoretically estimate a distance by using the time difference between a visible event and its corresponding sound, for example between lightning and thunder. It therefore uses the chronograph differently from a tachymeter intended to calculate average speed. The dial arrangement remains unchanged with date at 3 o’clock, 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock, running seconds and 24-hour indication at 9 o’clock, together with two central hands for elapsed seconds and minutes. This execution should be regarded as a rare crystal configuration rather than an entirely separate mechanical family. When buying one, the origin of the crystal and service history deserve to be documented as far as possible.
(1973) Omega Speedmaster Mark IV Black Automatic:
Introduced during the same period, the Mark IV shares several technical choices with the Speedmaster 125 while adopting a personality closer to other Speedmaster Mark watches. The Omega Speedmaster Mark IV ST 176.0009 also uses automatic calibre 1040, without chronometer certification, and retains centrally displayed chronograph minutes, date at 3 o’clock, 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock and running seconds with a 24-hour indication at 9 o’clock. Its approximately 42 mm tonneau case also uses, like the Speedmaster 125, a construction in which an inner module containing movement and dial is installed in an outer case. The Mark IV is nevertheless less substantial and does not use the wide integrated bar-link bracelet of the 125. Its existence demonstrates that the Speedmaster 125 was not an isolated mechanical experiment: it belongs to a period during which Omega explored several automatic architectures very far removed from the manually wound Moonwatch. The 125’s calibre 1041 nevertheless remains unique because of its chronometer certification.
(1974) Omega Speedmaster Automatic Mark 4.5 Black Day-Date:
The Speedmaster nicknamed Mark 4.5 by collectors represents the next stage in Omega’s automatic chronograph development. The Omega Speedmaster Automatic ST 176.0012 uses a tonneau case close to that of the Mark IV but replaces calibre 1040 with calibre 1045 based on the Lemania 5100. The dial retains the concept of a large central chronograph-minute hand while adding a day display alongside the date. The movement is designed according to a particularly functional and robust philosophy, distinct from the chronometer-certified 1041 of the Speedmaster 125. This reference helps position the 125 within a period of rapid transformation: between 1971 and the middle of the 1970s, Omega experimented with several automatic movements, tonneau cases, modular constructions and dial organisations. The Speedmaster 125 remains the most commemorative and ambitious proposition among them, notably because of the chronometer calibre created exclusively for it.
The first consideration is comfort. A Speedmaster 125 measures 42 mm wide, but this figure does not genuinely describe its physical presence. Its 51 mm length, 15 mm thickness, very broad bracelet and weight close to 180 grams make it considerably more substantial than a traditional Speedmaster Professional. Trying the watch on before purchase is almost essential. On a smaller wrist, the case may occupy virtually all the available width and the weight can become noticeable, while a larger wrist may distribute the integrated bracelet more effectively.
The case then deserves close inspection. Its broad upper surfaces should retain their brushing, while the sides and certain edges feature polished areas. Excessive refinishing can remove these transitions, round the outer shape and reduce part of the model’s highly architectural character. A watch carrying scratches but retaining its original geometry can be preferable to an excessively polished example. The two-part construction also makes it useful to examine the condition of the gasket positioned between the inner module and outer case.
The bracelet is an essential component of the purchase. The original 1221/212 forms an important part of the identity of the watch and replacement links can be difficult to locate. The 1225/212 subsequently appears as an Omega service bracelet and remains historically coherent, even though it differs from the original. It is essential to confirm that the bracelet is long enough for the wrist before completing the purchase. The integrated construction does not allow the stainless steel to be replaced simply by a universal 20 or 22 mm strap as on a Speedmaster Professional.
Calibre 1041 also requires particular attention. General timekeeping, date, operation of the 24-hour indicator and every chronograph function should be checked. Both central hands need to start correctly and return precisely to zero, while the 12-hour counter should advance and reset normally. A recent service by a watchmaker familiar with Omega calibres 1040 and 1041 represents a genuine advantage. A cheaper watch requiring complex mechanical restoration can quickly become more expensive than an example that has been better maintained from the outset.
Finally, the historical claim of “2,000 pieces” should not automatically be treated as a criterion of authenticity or rarity. Contemporary research conducted with the Omega archives indicates that production was higher and continued over several years. Authenticity should therefore be evaluated through the movement, dial, case, bracelet, serial numbers and their overall consistency. An archive extract or original documentation can provide interesting information, but the actual condition of the watch remains essential. Other customers’ opinions are essential.
The Omega Speedmaster 125 is aimed at enthusiasts looking for a Speedmaster radically different from the Moonwatch and representative of Omega’s technical creativity in the early 1970s. Its enormous integrated case, dedicated bracelet, two-central-hand chronograph display and calibre 1041 give it an identity impossible to confuse with a conventional Speedmaster. Its principal historical importance lies in its status as the first officially certified chronometer automatic chronograph, together with its role as the commemorative watch created for Omega’s 125th anniversary. Its size and weight nevertheless make it important to assess wrist comfort before being seduced by its history alone. Bracelet condition and complete movement functionality are also essential on a watch now more than fifty years old.
