The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Chronograph, launched in 2023, places a chronograph complication inside the reversible Reverso architecture through an approach very different from that of a conventional chronograph. Its front deliberately preserves the restrained appearance of the Tribute line, displaying only hours and minutes, while the reverse reveals the movement and concentrates the chronograph indications: central chronograph seconds and a retrograde thirty-minute counter.
The model therefore revisits the concept of the 1996 Reverso Chronographe Rétrograde while using an entirely new mechanism, manufacture calibre 860. This movement must simultaneously drive two sets of hands displaying the same time on opposite faces, power an integrated chronograph and operate a retrograde counter while remaining thin enough to fit into a 49.4 × 29.9 mm case only 11.14 mm thick. The family is available in stainless steel, pink gold and a version extensively executed in pink gold.
The aesthetic concept begins with the contrast between the two faces. The front makes almost no attempt to reveal immediately that a chronograph is present: it uses the familiar Reverso Tribute language with a comparatively restrained dial, applied trapezoidal indexes, a chemin de fer minute track and Dauphine hands. On the steel version, the dial is sunray grey-blue; the first pink-gold version uses sunray black. The front therefore allows the watch to be worn like a particularly understated two-hand Reverso while a far more spectacular complication remains hidden on the opposite side. This dual personality is fundamental to the appeal of the model.
The reverse changes register completely. Rather than a conventional solid dial, it uses an extensively openworked construction revealing calibre 860, its bridges, levers and part of the chronograph mechanism. The indexes and minute track seem to float above the mechanics, while the chronograph indications use blue hands on several versions to distinguish them visually from the time display. The reverse turns the movement itself into decoration and makes the chronograph as much a mechanical spectacle as a timing instrument. This approach also prevents the front from being overloaded with several circular registers poorly suited to the rectangular geometry.
The thirty-minute counter is the most original element. Instead of a circular subdial, Jaeger-LeCoultre uses an arc-shaped scale across the lower part of the reverse. The hand progresses during timing and returns to its starting point once the indication completes its course before beginning another cycle. The retrograde counter adapts chronograph minutes to the rectangular Reverso architecture rather than forcing a conventional circular display into the case. It also frees the central area for the large chronograph seconds and the secondary time indication.
The central chronograph seconds hand travels around a broad peripheral scale. Once timing has stopped, the wearer can simply flip the case over and return to a much more discreet front. Operating the Reverso therefore becomes part of the chronograph experience: the wearer chooses not only whether to start the mechanism but also which personality of the watch is visible. Reversibility becomes a genuine display function rather than merely the historical means of protecting the crystal. This characteristic strongly differentiates the watch from chronographs with permanently visible dual dials.
The third variation introduced in 2024 takes the visual concept further. Its front dial is made from solid pink gold and laser-engraved with fine horizontal lines that reinforce the rectilinear proportions of the case and echo the Reverso’s three signature gadroons. The visible bridges on the reverse are also pink gold and decorated with vertical Geneva stripes. The Q389256J turns the chronograph mechanism into an almost monochromatic composition in which case, dial, indexes and bridges share the same precious metal. It is considerably more demonstrative than the steel model while retaining exactly the same functional architecture.
The case measures 49.4 mm in length including the lugs, 29.9 mm wide and 11.14 mm thick. These measurements need to be understood differently from those of a round watch: almost fifty millimetres represents rectangular length rather than diameter, while the width of less than thirty millimetres keeps the transverse footprint comparatively narrow. Wrist presence depends more on case length and lug curvature than on the relatively modest width. On a small wrist, the watch should therefore be tried on rather than compared directly with a 30 mm round model.
The reversible mechanism necessarily adds several construction levels. The movement container pivots within a carrier attached to the strap; it must slide out, rotate through 180 degrees and lock accurately in the opposite direction. Despite this layered architecture, total thickness remains below 12 mm, particularly notable given that the movement itself measures 5.44 mm. The relative thinness is one of the model’s principal technical achievements considering the simultaneous presence of a chronograph, two time displays and the reversible mechanism. The watch is nevertheless thicker than a simple Reverso Tribute.
The chronograph pushers are integrated into the side of the middle case around the crown. Their rectangular shape is discreet enough not to interrupt the Art Deco lines, yet their presence immediately signals the sporting complication inside. The movement uses a column wheel to coordinate start, stop and reset operations. Integrating the pushers into the case lines avoids the protruding appearance commonly associated with round chronographs. Their operation can nevertheless feel slightly unusual when the case has been reversed and requires a short period of familiarisation.
Water resistance is rated to 3 bar. This specification corresponds to the philosophy of a complicated Reverso rather than a diving or aquatic sports watch. The structure contains several moving interfaces related to the swivelling system and the watch is normally supplied on leather or a leather-and-textile combination. The Reverso Tribute Chronograph should be treated as a watch capable of handling normal accidental splashes rather than one intended for swimming. A water-resistance check also remains sensible after several years of ownership.
The straps were created with Casa Fagliano, the Argentinian workshop specialising in polo boots, directly reconnecting the Reverso with its sporting origins of 1931. The steel model is notably paired with a blue leather-and-textile strap and an additional leather option, while gold versions receive more classical combinations. A quick-release system makes changes straightforward. Changing the strap substantially alters the character of the watch, moving from an almost sporting textile presentation to a far more formal appearance on alligator or smooth leather. This versatility is particularly relevant for a watch that already has two visual identities through its two faces.
Calibre 860 is a manufacture hand-wound movement developed specifically for this Reverso. It is rectangular in order to make efficient use of the internal space and comprises 292 components according to current technical specifications, 38 jewels and a single barrel. It operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour, or 4 Hz, and provides 52 hours of power reserve. Calibre 860 is not a round mechanism adapted to a shaped case but a movement conceived to work within the rectangular architecture of the Reverso. This design also supports the composition of the openworked reverse, whose components naturally follow the case geometry.
The chronograph is fully integrated into the main movement and controlled by a column wheel. Jaeger-LeCoultre selected a horizontal clutch rather than a vertical one in order to reduce total movement thickness. The architecture makes several elements connected with chronograph operation directly visible from the reverse. The horizontal clutch is therefore used as an answer to the thinness constraints imposed by the rectangular reversible case. It contributes both to the physical architecture of the calibre and to the mechanical spectacle visible during use.
One of the principal challenges is displaying exactly the same time on both faces. Because the dials face opposite directions, the two sets of hands must be mechanically driven in opposite directions so that, when viewed by the wearer, both rotate normally clockwise. The watch is therefore not a Duoface providing two independent time zones: it repeats the same time on both sides. The dual display requires a specific transmission system even though it deliberately adds no second-time-zone function. Its purpose is to make the watch fully usable whichever face has been selected.
The thirty-minute retrograde counter creates another mechanical challenge. Instead of turning continuously through 360 degrees, its hand travels along an arc and then returns rapidly to the starting point when its course is completed. This function must remain synchronised with the central chronograph seconds. The retrograde architecture concentrates a thirty-minute indication across the lower part of the movement while preserving the visual openness of the reverse. It also forms the clearest mechanical connection with the 1996 Chronographe Rétrograde.
Manual winding is consistent with the search for reduced thickness and with the desire to expose the mechanism. The absence of an automatic rotor frees most of the reverse and prevents an oscillating weight from periodically masking the bridges. With 52 hours of reserve, a full wind covers approximately two days of normal use. Winding every day or two becomes an intentional part of ownership rather than an accidental inconvenience. The crown should naturally never be forced once the mainspring has reached full tension.
(1996) Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Chronographe Rétrograde Historical Predecessor:
The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Chronographe Rétrograde 270.2.69 forms the direct conceptual predecessor to the modern watch. Produced in pink gold in a limited series of 500 pieces, it uses hand-wound calibre 829 and a case measuring approximately 42 × 26 mm. Its front displays the time, date and several indications linked to operation, while the reverse reveals chronograph seconds and a thirty-minute retrograde counter. Calibre 829 is particularly important in the manufacture’s history: Jaeger-LeCoultre describes it as its first manually wound integrated chronograph developed entirely in-house since the quartz era and as a mechanism specifically designed for a rectangular case. The watch belongs to the series of complicated Reversos created during the 1990s and provides the technical concept that calibre 860 would reinterpret almost three decades later.
(2023) Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Chronograph Steel Revival of the Chronograph:
The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Chronograph Q389848J marks the return of the Reverso chronograph at Watches and Wonders 2023. Its stainless-steel case measures 49.4 × 29.9 mm and 11.14 mm thick and carries a 3-bar water-resistance rating. The front receives a sunray grey-blue dial with applied markers and Dauphine hands, while the extensively openworked reverse reveals manufacture calibre 860 together with central chronograph seconds and the retrograde thirty-minute counter. Hours and minutes can be read on both faces. The hand-wound movement operates at 4 Hz and provides 52 hours of reserve. Two interchangeable straps developed with Casa Fagliano are supplied, and this reference remains the most visually understated interpretation of the contemporary family.
(2023) Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Chronograph Pink Gold Black-and-Gold Contrast:
The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Chronograph Q389257J is introduced alongside the steel version and retains exactly the same dimensions and calibre 860. Its case is made from 18k pink gold and the front uses a sunray black dial against which the applied indexes and hands stand out. Once reversed, the watch reveals an openworked display in warm golden tones with blue chronograph hands and visible bridge decoration. The retrograde counter remains across the lower section and the central chronograph seconds occupies the perimeter. This reference adds no complication compared with the steel model: its distinction comes from the material, warmer finishing and a more precious wrist presence.
(2024) Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Chronograph Full Pink Gold 250-Piece Edition:
The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Chronograph Q389256J takes the pink-gold concept substantially further in 2024 through a limited edition of 250 pieces. The case, front dial, indexes, buckle and several visible movement bridges are executed in 18k pink gold. Fine horizontal lines are laser-engraved across the dial to reinforce the Reverso’s Art Deco geometry, while the reverse bridges receive vertical Geneva stripes. Dimensions remain 49.4 × 29.9 × 11.14 mm and calibre 860 preserves its 52-hour reserve, integrated chronograph and retrograde thirty-minute counter. Two interchangeable straps, one in Fagliano calfskin and the other in black alligator, allow the personality of the watch to be changed significantly.
The steel Q389848J is the most relevant choice for someone wanting to emphasise the mechanical and sporting dimension of the concept. Its grey-blue front dial, blue chronograph hands and Fagliano straps create a less formal personality than the precious-metal variations. Steel is particularly coherent when the watch is intended to be worn regularly rather than treated only as a collector’s object. Its polished surfaces nevertheless remain susceptible to micro-scratches, especially around the swivelling mechanism.
The pink-gold Q389257J better suits someone wanting a strong contrast between a relatively classical black front and a much more spectacular mechanical reverse. The additional mass of gold is noticeable on the wrist and reinforces the sensation of a precious object. This version prioritises warmth of material and the black-and-gold contrast without changing the functions or performance of the calibre. The decision is therefore principally aesthetic and connected with the desired wrist sensation.
The 2024 Q389256J follows a more collectible logic through its limitation to 250 pieces and the extensive use of pink gold on both the dial and movement bridges. It is visually less discreet but offers exceptional material consistency between the two sides. The Full Pink Gold edition makes most sense when rarity, movement decoration and metalwork matter as much as the chronograph itself. Provenance and completeness of accessories naturally become particularly important on the secondary market.
Whatever the version, the 49.4 mm length deserves an actual wrist test. A rectangular case does not behave like a round one and can occupy a large proportion of a smaller wrist despite being only 29.9 mm wide. Comfort depends primarily on how the ends of the case sit in relation to the actual width of the wrist. The reversible mechanism must also remain easy to manipulate without the strap being fitted excessively tightly.
Finally, the 3-bar water resistance means this Reverso should be approached as a high-horology chronograph designed principally for terrestrial use. On a pre-owned watch, the pushers, zero reset, retrograde counter, case locking and consistency of manual winding should all be checked carefully. Correct operation of the reversible mechanism and chronograph matters more than a complete absence of micro-scratches on an object designed to be manipulated regularly. Other customers’ opinions are essential.
The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Chronograph is aimed at enthusiasts wanting a sporting complication interpreted through the language of Art Deco and high watchmaking rather than that of a conventional chronograph. Its exceptionally restrained front, openworked reverse, thirty-minute retrograde counter and identical time display on both sides create an unusual ownership experience, while calibre 860 concentrates 292 components into only 5.44 mm of movement thickness. Steel provides the most versatile expression, pink gold adds greater presence and the 250-piece Full Pink Gold edition takes decoration and rarity further. The principal practical limitations are the significant case length, 52-hour power reserve and especially the 3-bar water-resistance rating.
To compare actual comfort, operation of the reversible system, pusher feel and long-term enjoyment of manual winding, Dialicious customer reviews provide a particularly useful complement.
