I can't even say I chose this Greubel Forsey over another: I love the brand far too much for that, and I own several. But if I had to explain what truly captivated me about the Double Convex Balance, I vividly remember the moment a watchmaker explained its workings to me. Two inclined balance wheels connected by a spherical differential that averages their rates. I found the principle absolutely brilliant. And as is often the case with Greubel Forsey, behind something visually spectacular lies genuine horological ingenuity. On the wrist, it also holds a delightful surprise. Its diameter and architecture give it a substantial presence, but the titanium completely transforms the experience. It's so light that you quickly forget its size. A large watch that feels almost imperceptible: it's practically cheating. The double balance wheel is obviously magnificent to behold, but what I love about Greubel Forsey is that you can look at their watches in two ways. From a distance, the whole thing is visually striking. Then you take a magnifying glass and discover another world. And there, the problem is always the same: you look for the detail that might have been treated with a little less care than the others… and you don't find it. The finishing is, in my eyes, simply perfect. Fucking perfect, even. There, I said it. 😂 Photographs don't really do it justice. Like many Greubel Forsey watches, the case and dial are extremely layered. The different levels, the volumes, the openings, and all this architecture actually create a depth that the image tends to flatten. You really have to see it in person to appreciate the object. And despite all this delightful mechanical chaos, the timekeeping remains excellent. The hands are large, perfectly designed, and visually positioned above all the other architectural details. You could easily spend ten minutes watching the balance wheels in action… and then, perhaps, remember that a watch also tells the time. As for flaws, I've looked. But then again… you can't criticize God. 😂 More seriously, I could obviously criticize its price or size if I considered them independently of its intended purpose. But as the owner, there's nothing that truly bothers me when I wear it. It's also one of the watches in my collection that most consistently elicits the same reaction. Whether they're a watch enthusiast or not, practically everyone who sees it in person falls under its spell. And for a true connoisseur, encountering a Double Convex Balance in the wild is rare enough to provoke a… let's say, slightly over-the-top reaction. 😂 What I perhaps like most about it, ultimately, is its versatility. It's spectacular without being complicated to wear. It works with a suit—apparently, I don't wear it much—as well as with Bermuda shorts and sneakers at McDonald's, which is much more in line with my natural environment. It always looks perfectly at home. Greubel Forsey remains a true love story for me. Because the brand strives for perfection in everything: in design, in manufacturing, in finishing, in craftsmanship, but also in that human touch I've always found there. For me, it's simply the pinnacle of watchmaking. And ultimately, my Double Balancier Convex is probably just that: the most expensive everyday watch… but also one of the best.
