Did you know that when it was released in 1960, Bulova displayed its Spaceview watches without dials so that customers could observe the mechanism?

Well, it was so popular that they left them that way! 360 hertz, does that ring a bell? It simply means that the tuning fork vibrates 360 times per second… how? Well, the battery sends energy to the coils that surround the two ends of the tuning fork, and the magic happens. The vibrations then set the hands at such a frequency that the seconds hand seems to float, like on a Grand Seiko Spring Drive. The 38mm case, which sits well, comes in multiple case shapes; we're definitely in the heart of the 70s. An American brand, and models that have exceeded Mach 3 and even gone into space…

Oh, I almost forgot, don't bother looking for the crown; it's on the back of the case, and you have to lift the cover to set it.

A trip into space?

40mm, no bezel, maximum opening that puts this magnificent, immaculate enamel dial front and center. Emerging from the Roaring Twenties, in the heart of the 1930s, these enamel dials were produced for several brands, which piled their logos and trademarks on top. This version features two scales: a spiral tachymeter that can measure speed over three minutes (unlike the one minute of classic tachymeter scales) and a very practical telemeter for determining whether a storm is approaching or moving away, or, in the past, for locating the enemy front by calculating the distance between the cannon shot and the explosion.

A single pusher, therefore, a single button to start, stop, and reset the chronograph. A superb onion crown completes this watch with its irresistible charm.

Half of its 14mm thickness comes from the prominent domed plexiglass crystal, and the best part of this marvel is that it can be opened from the front—and, if you'll excuse the expression, from the back—to directly access the (unsigned) movement. Most of these watches are gold-plated or yellow gold-plated, but mine is chrome, which is much more versatile. The lugs are almost nonexistent, giving it a stunning look. It looks great with jeans and a t-shirt, and equally at home with a crisp white shirt and a suit. It's definitely one of my watches that gets the most positive feedback!

Miverva Chromograph from the 1930s - Enamel single-button

Glycine launched its first GMT watch in 1953, one year before Rolex and its GMT. The first watch to feature a 24-hour rotating bezel—that sets the scene!

For the first three years, the dials were off-white or champagne, then black. Mine is from 1956 and is the first model to feature a mechanical stop-seconds function with a thread (as thin as a hair) that literally pops out of the dial when you pull the crown out at 3 o'clock. This filament acts as a stop, halting the seconds hand at 24 hours. At the time, this was the only way to synchronize these watches, which saw action in the Vietnam and Indochina Wars. The watch is a 24-hour timepiece; the hour hand rotates only once every 24 hours—that alone sets it apart. Radium hands...

Oh, and I almost forgot, the second crown is used to lock the bezel in place once you've aligned it with the hour hand to indicate your second time zone. 36mm of pure joy, it wears beautifully. The lugs are long relative to the diameter, giving it a more substantial presence on the wrist. It has a real adventurer's look, but you have to get used to reading the 24 on the dial, even though that's actually the most obvious part!

The first true GMT watch - My 1956 Airman

The brand's first diving model, produced for only one year (1967), is extremely rare (approximately 100 in circulation according to the literature).

42.5 mm in diameter, like all Doxas, it is labeled "small" because it is very compact.

Unlike all other Doxas that followed, it has a very curved plastic lens (the others are flat), which makes it unique and also thinner. It is clearly the easiest Doxa to wear if you had to choose just one.

This model came in three "classic" colors: Professional (orange), Sharhunter (black), and Searambler (silver). I love the contrast of the oversized orange hand against the sunburst dial. All original, with a signed crown and a vintage bracelet and rice grain, offering unparalleled comfort and ingenuity (extensions + micro-adjustments).

A large part of Doxa's history is on the wrist for this diver, adopted by Jacques Cousteau himself, who imported it to the USA under his Aqualung brand. A collector's item par excellence, don't hesitate if the opportunity arises!

Sub 300 (no t) - 1967

This watch is completely original (Synchron Era 1st generation), 42.5mm in diameter and 13/14mm thick.

Like all Doxas, it's very compact for its stated diameter because the case is wider than the bezel. My wrist is 16.5cm and I can "manage" it without any problem (and I also wear 36mm watches), so don't be afraid!!

The Professional version, so orange, is the very essence of the brand.

I can only recommend buying a vintage Doxa with its original rice grain strap with its micro-adjustable buckle (like handcuffs) and its two side extensions that allow you to wear your watch over your sailor sweater (yes, I do that!) without the need for tools! The strap is solid and very thin, a joy.

In short, a burst of color on your wrist, you'll find all the Rolex Subs around you, a true tool watch with character and patents (decompression bezel) that marked an entire era.



Sub 300t vintage

The term "icon" is often used, sometimes incorrectly, but here you'll agree that the Sub 300T, with its sunburst and silver dial, is a direct nod to the Sub 300T Conquistador tradition.
The Sub tradition began with the Sub 300 in 1967, and soon afterward, in 1969, the Sub 300T was designed in collaboration with Claude Wesly, a member of Jacques-Yves Cousteau's crew. The new diver's watch boasted numerous innovations: case, crown, rotating bezel with its double scale, dial, hands, automatic movement with date, adjustable steel bracelet, and the most important innovation, the helium escape valve. The brand is keen to emphasize that it worked rigorously and scientifically.
The helium escape valve, developed jointly with Rolex, has now become a standard feature in all professional diver's watches. It allows the evacuation of helium molecules, which, being smaller than those of oxygen or nitrogen, can penetrate the case and, under underwater pressure, dislodge the watch crystal.
And if it's called Sub 300T, it's because of the tritium that coats its indexes and hands in very large quantities to provide the greatest luminescence. The tritium has been replaced by luminova.
I had intended to buy this diver's watch, but the brand wasn't distributed in France. In 2023, my favorite watchmaker, Stéphane Clouzeau, became the brand's first distributor! On June 9, 2023, he organized a brand presentation evening. Happy to rediscover this legendary diving brand, I was there in Pithiviers with other watch fans. The first thing I noticed was that a Doxa Sub 300 has a smaller dial opening than a 300T. This was the point that stumped me the most, but the differences don't stop there. The Sub 300T has a more interesting clasp than the 300, allowing the watch to be easily adjusted to the right size via a simple adjustment (see photo).
Personally, I was unsure which model to choose between the Sub 300 Professional with an orange dial and the Sub 300T Searambler. I admit that the choice was made very quickly early in the evening, as the Sub 300T had so many important features.

The dimensions of the 300T versus the 300 are:
- Diameter tied! 42.50 mm x 44.50 mm (same dimensions);
- Thickness 13.65 mm for the 300T versus 13.40 mm for the 300;
- Water resistance 1,200 meters for the 300T versus 300 meters for the 300.

I find the watch very comfortable to wear. Its silver sunray dial is magnificent in the sun, creating irises of color. The touches of Luminova on this sunray dial make it magnificent. The case, the finish of the bezel, the crown, the rice grain bracelet, and the engravings on the caseback of the watch demonstrate the brand's real attention to detail.
Unfortunately, I find that, unlike in the past, the Luminova is a little weak, and compared to my divers, a Seiko SKX is more luminescent.
Despite everything, the watch is beautiful and solid. The few Atlantic waves last summer didn't affect it.
I recommend this brand to anyone looking for an original watch with a touch of history.
