Spectacular & dazzling

There are watches you buy. And then there are those that enter your life. The Breitling Colt automatic I'm presenting to you today has been part of mine since 2007. Almost twenty years already. As such, it has been the silent witness to countless moments: happy times, more difficult periods, significant turning points, and even seemingly insignificant events… but which, put together, form a story. My story. It's the first Swiss automatic watch I allowed myself to buy. Before it, there had been dozens of watches, of varying quality, worn with pleasure but without any real horological attachment. This Colt marks a turning point. A transition. The point at which you stop wearing a watch simply to tell the time, and you begin to wear an object that has meaning. The choice wasn't made lightly. Even back then, I was drawn to Breitling. Like many enthusiasts, I spent long periods in front of the windows of authorized retailers, mesmerized by the brand's strong visual identity, its sumptuous catalogs, and those photos of airplanes, cockpits, and powerful dials. It was all so captivating. There was also, I think, a more subtle influence: the novels of Gérard de Villiers, the SAS series. Malko Linge, the Austrian spy, almost always wears a different Breitling on his wrist. A seed, no doubt, planted very early on, somewhere in my imagination, that eventually sprouted. After literally learning the catalog by heart, the Colt became the obvious choice. It brought together everything I loved about Breitling, without the excesses. A restrained 40mm diameter, which, in retrospect, seems to me a form of perfection. A real presence, but never intrusive. And then there's the pilot's strap, which, in my opinion, is responsible for much of the watch's charm. Its links evoke the image of planes flying in formation, united, cohesive, and powerful. It's a signature, an identity. The dial, meanwhile, strikes a remarkable balance. Neither too busy nor too sparse. Just right. It possesses a subtle, almost organic texture, sometimes reminiscent of a vinyl record, offering shifting reflections from light gray to the deepest black depending on the light. The sapphire crystal, treated with Breitling's signature anti-reflective coating, sometimes seems to disappear completely. Inside, the movement is unpretentious, but it's serious, robust, and above all, exquisitely crafted. I had the opportunity to observe it during a service at my watchmaker's, and the finely decorated oscillating weight is well worth a look. On the wrist, despite a certain brilliance, the watch remains surprisingly well-balanced. It's eye-catching without ever being flashy. If I had to choose a single adjective to describe it, it would undoubtedly be spectacular, but in the best possible way. Looking back, I'm glad I chose a Breitling from that era, before the investor takeover. While I have a lot of respect for the work done since then, I remain nostalgic for that period in the late 90s and early 2000s, when the brand seemed to cater to a niche of passionate enthusiasts, without compromise. I'll never part with this Colt. It's a part of me. And if you have the opportunity to find one in good condition on the secondary market, I can only encourage you to seize the opportunity. For anyone who loves the brand, it's undoubtedly one of the best value-for-money watches of that generation. Emotionally, for me, it's a 5 out of 5. But that, of course, is very personal.
