Carl Suchy & Söhne, founded in 1822, is a historical house born in Prague and later based in Vienna, created by watchmaker Carl Suchy and revived from 2016 under Robert Punkenhofer; it caters to enthusiasts of Viennese Modernism who want pared-back dress watches that still deliver mechanical substance.

Viennese Modernism and the “waltz” seconds disc: time in motion

The aesthetic draws on Adolf Loos: crossed dial lines, polished/brushed volumes, and a waltzing seconds disc at 6 o’clock that aligns with the guilloché once per minute; mechanically, the Waltz N°1 uses Vaucher’s 2.6 mm VMF 5401 micro-rotor, finished and adjusted for the brand, keeping the case slim and comfortable. This blends Loos-style minimalism with credible micro-mechanics for clear, everyday wear.

Waltz N°1 and Belvedere: families and use cases

The range focuses on a dress “waltz” watch — including Skeleton and “Day & Night” variants — and on the sport-chic “Belvedere” (40.8 mm steel, 100 m) with integrated bracelet and a more textured dial; together they span formal attire to refined casual without blurring identity. Start by choosing the architecture (dress waltz vs. integrated sport), then the wrist presence and finish.

Carl Suchy & Söhne Waltz N°1 Skeleton — Openworked dial following Loos’ lines; GPHG 2018 nomination.

Carl Suchy & Söhne Waltz N°1 Day & Night — Dial update playing with day/night contrast.

Carl Suchy & Söhne Belvedere — Integrated-bracelet sport-chic, 40.8 mm, 10 ATM; Midnight/Champagne/Bordeaux runs and titanium/steel variants depending on the series.

From 1822 to today: imperial heritage and a modern revival

A flagship of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Carl Suchy & Söhne supplied the royal court and counted Emperor Franz Joseph I and Sigmund Freud among its owners; a long “creative break” began around 1914, followed by an official revival in Vienna from 2016 with limited series. The current lineup embraces Viennese heritage while leaning on a clearly identified Swiss ecosystem (movement, assembly).

Positioning, pricing, and reach

Historically, the Waltz N°1 has sat around ~€7,500–8,500 depending on version and period, while the Belvedere has listed, depending on series, from ~€6,400 (2023 launch) to ~€7,900 (2024 colors) and up to ~€9,900 for certain titanium/limited variants; distribution mixes direct sales and selected retailers in Europe and Asia. The target buyer seeks a design-led dress piece or an integrated sport watch that stays faithful to Viennese Modernism.

Conclusion

Carl Suchy & Söhne is for those who want an instantly recognizable watch thanks to its waltzing seconds and quietly architectural style. The Carl Suchy & Söhne Waltz N°1 is the natural choice for formal elegance and slim wear; the Carl Suchy & Söhne Waltz N°1 Skeleton suits fans of controlled openness; the Carl Suchy & Söhne Belvedere delivers daily versatility without abandoning Viennese DNA.
