Owning a 1954 Universal Genève Polerouter 138 SS is much more than just wearing a watch; it's forging an almost intimate connection with a piece of horological history. The model I was fortunate enough to find—in steel, mounted on a blue leather strap—represents the culmination of nearly two years of searching. I had never found a watch that combined such good condition, vintage charm, and a reasonable price… until I stumbled upon this Polerouter at a watch fair in 2024. A real bargain, and above all, love at first sight. What distinguishes this piece is primarily its bumper caliber, whose old-fashioned oscillating movement provides an absolutely unique sensation on the wrist. Without even looking at the dial, you can feel this subtle, warm, almost living mechanical pulse. This discreet, almost organic presence creates a special connection with the watch, a connection that no more streamlined modern movement could truly replicate. I serviced the watch myself as soon as I bought it, which allowed me to understand every detail, every technical nuance. And despite its venerable age, it hasn't hesitated to accompany me through the most unexpected moments. While I mainly wear it with a suit—where it shines with its timeless elegance—or at watch fairs where it never fails to attract attention, I've even taken it to the gym a few times without any hesitation. It has survived the decades; it can certainly handle another workout. Its patinated dial, its perfectly proportioned steel case, and the blue leather strap that lends it a refined yet understated touch form a harmonious, authentic, and undeniably appealing whole. This is a watch that tells a story, its own as well as mine, and it continues to remind me every day why I love watchmaking so much. In short, this Polerouter 138 SS is not just a beautiful acquisition: it's a unique, charismatic watch, profoundly pleasant to wear and even more so to live with. For me, it embodies the very essence of what a vintage watch should be: charm, character, and that little bit of magic that only pieces from the past can offer.
