Unable to obtain the new configuration of the Datejust that I wanted, I opted for this neo-vintage reference from my year of birth. It is clear that the watch has aged better than me!

Indeed, it still looks great even if it had to be repolished. Even though it shows some signs of wear, in particular marks on the edges of the sapphire crystal, its timeless look and the additions of the 5-digit Datejust references (sapphire crystal precisely, but also the quick date function) make it a surprisingly viable watch for everyday use given its age. I particularly like this silver sunray dial, which often appears white in photos but which has an interesting depth in the light!

I took the time to investigate an offer with a jubilee bracelet that is still robust and without too much stretch. It is extremely light and very comfortable.

I will never tire of this watch, which also boasts of having introduced me to the world of Rolex!

When you think of Grand Seiko, many codes and characteristics quickly come to mind...

The SLGA009 combines all of this into an absolutely exquisite watch.
Just looking at it is a spectacle at all times. Between the so-called "White Birch" dial whose level of detail surprises at every glance, and the "phantom" seconds symptomatic of the Spring Drive, we never tire of observing it.

The quintessential Grand Seiko...

The Speedmaster Moonwatch is one of the most iconic watches, if not the most iconic.

Since its creation, it has managed to maintain an aesthetic relatively faithful to the original concept, which I find very appealing.

However, I have a penchant for "sporty chic" watches, and while I would have gladly acquired a more traditional Speedmaster, this new iteration ticked many boxes close to my tastes and seemed like the obvious choice.

So I bought it immediately after its release and have absolutely no regrets about my purchase (admittedly expensive for the value proposition).

In my opinion, it is relevant to today's market, which favors the iconic and is becoming increasingly premium, for better or for worse.

A classic that lives in its time

The Legend Diver lives up to its name.
A legendary watch, with an iconic design and whose codes have changed very little between the original and its recent reissues.
The one I bought, which is the reference prior to the current one, is the one that convinces best in this not easy exercise of bringing a watch from yesteryear up to date: slightly faded cream indices, domed sapphire crystal and subtle Milanese mesh bracelet contribute to a resolutely vintage aesthetic, all in a very practical 36mm package that still offers presence.
Many brands are trying their hand at neo-vintage these days, but few have succeeded as well as Longines with this watch!

Smart neo-vintage

The Yacht-Master feels like the ugly duckling of Rolex.
Unknown, unpopular, more expensive and uneventful version of the Submariner? I personally see it as a more refined, versatile piece and, above all, recommend seeing it in real life before judging it.
This piece is simply stunning. I fell in love with it from the first contact and have absolutely no regrets about its acquisition.
The format is also pleasant, being available in 37mm for people with thin wrists like mine. The watch is also surprisingly thin, reinforcing comfort on the wrist.
I hope this review will encourage other people to go see it, but be careful! This ghostly sunray dial may grab you as it grabbed me...

Misunderstood? Underrated?

This watch was given to me by my aunt without me knowing that she owned it. It therefore carries a significant sentimental value, but is also very much to my taste stylistically and reminds me a lot of Breguet, which is a house that I love. 
In addition, it reminds me of my first watchmaking loves, because I almost started my adventure in mechanical watchmaking with a Maurice Lacroix.

I was looking for THE watch, the one I would wear every day, robust, reliable, elegant, historic, waterproof, prestigious, the watch of my dreams. For me it ticks all the boxes.

This iteration of the Speed, the 3861 combines modernity and the excellence of a cutting-edge movement, with classic and timeless charm, especially with the hesalite glass. I chose this model because I am a carpenter, I only wear it every day, I swim with it in summer, I bathe my daughters with it, it lives with me. The steel back with the Omega seahorse looks more like a toolwatch I think, with the all-brushed bracelet. And the hesalite brings so much depth to the dial, the play of light, the distortion, the dome, with this step dial and the sub-dials that add so much relief. A little polywatch once a year, and off we go again! I am therefore less afraid of scratching the hesalite than a sapphire! I find that it gives it a real extra soul. This is the only watch that offers that in the current landscape. And we are talking about a hand-wound chronograph, which for me is already part of an approach with an emotional connection to this watch.

I find the new chronograph hand thinner, more elegant, the railway more airy and precise in relation to the frequency of the movement, the balance of the baton indexes and the readability are incredible.

I don't have a big wrist, but the 42 mm don't feel it at all. It is the size of a 40 mm, that's the genius of Omega, with these Lyre lugs, the refined bracelet, the reduced lug-to-lug distance...

The 3861 is very precise, it only advances 0.2s per day. Anti-magnetic, waterproof, the METAS certification reassures me, and the co-axial movement is exceptional. 

Its history is obviously incredible, but it is not only about the conquest of space. It has also experienced polar and Antarctic expeditions, and that is what I like. 

To conclude, this speed is for me the ultimate watch, the watch of a lifetime. It is a dreamer's watch.

A legendary watch, my watch

For my 50th birthday, I wanted a special watch so I decided to go with an Omega Moonwatch. The recently discontinued model (caliber 1861) was in production for over 20+ years so a large number of them is out there.  The most recent iteration (caliber 3861), with its new bracelet, became too dressy for my liking and lost its tool watch looks.  It’s like comparing a Rolex on Oyster vs Jubilee….  The Omega “Tintin” was produced for only 2 years so it’s empirically rare.  I like the “If you know, you know” factor! 

To the Moon and back

My Seed (lunar)

Is it still necessary to add an additional opinion on the Speedmaster? I'll risk it anyway. A watch is a story, a movement, and a design. And there, nothing to complain about, the three elements are combined. Yes, Omega plays the marketing of the "first watch on the Moon" to the fullest. But it still works, right? Then there is this design, what readability, what balance. I don't know why some aficionados go crazy with this DON (dot over 90) but it is there. And finally, this co-axial caliber is still exceptional. I like the rustic side of the manual winding. It allows you to have a more intimate connection with your watch (well, you get what I mean).
And what I also like about my Speed is that you can wear it with a suit as well as on a golf course or in the evening. And when you want to change your look, everything suits it: NATO in all colors, black or brown leather.

Indispensable

This is my very first Speedmaster, and quite honestly, one of the watch purchases that required the most thought.

Two fittings in the store, a lot of hesitation, especially between the Hesalite version, more faithful to the original—with its warmer crystal and painted Ω logo—and this sapphire version, more modern and elegant.

What finally convinced me was the sapphire crystal case back. Being able to admire the caliber 3861, this magnificent hand-wound movement, is a real pleasure. There's something very poetic about this daily gesture, almost a ritual that creates a special connection with the watch.

The bracelet also plays a big part: mostly brushed, with polished center links, it adds a real touch of elegance while retaining the iconic DNA of the Moonwatch.

And then there's the story. It's hard to get more compelling than that.
This is THE watch that went to the Moon. Wearing it is like wearing a piece of history, exploration, and human audacity.

Today, with a bit of hindsight, I even think this Speedmaster can be a perfectly legitimate alternative to a modern Rolex Daytona (ceramic bezel, black dial). When you consider the price difference, the question is definitely worth asking.

And it reminds me of something else:

It's a bit like the iPhone/Samsung comparison. I've always had iPhones. Always. And then, for the first time in my life, I found myself dazzled and impressed by a Samsung.

Same feeling here: a discovery, an unexpected revelation, and a real questioning of my assumptions.

The result?
I'm completely won over.
An iconic, coherent watch, full of meaning… and incredibly impressive for a first Speedmaster.
