I was looking for a very precise three-hand watch with a date function. That's how I came across this Grand Seiko SBGA211 with its famous Spring Drive movement. This model, nicknamed "Snowflake," was released in 2017, the year Grand Seiko separated from Seiko to become an independent luxury brand. The case and bracelet are made of high-intensity titanium, giving the watch exceptional lightness. Everything is polished using the Zaratsu method, an ancient technique used on Japanese swords. This technique, applied to materials harder than steel, is a true challenge that requires years of practice. The result is evident in the sharp edges between the polished and brushed surfaces. This model is the brand's first to feature a textured dial. As its name suggests, it represents freshly fallen snow. It was inspired by the snow-capped peaks of the Hotaka Mountains, visible from the Japanese factory. In these mountains, the snow is sculpted by fierce winds, creating intricate patterns. A date window is located at 3 o'clock, and a power reserve indicator is at 8 o'clock. Apart from the blued seconds hand, the hands are sword-shaped, a signature of the brand. Like the hour markers, they feature sharp edges thanks to Zaratsu polishing. In the Swiss watch industry, the words "quartz" and "luxury" are rarely associated. Here, the Spring Drive 9R65 movement dares to combine the best of quartz and mechanical technologies. It is indeed an automatic watch with a rotor, but there is no traditional balance wheel and escapement. Instead, there is an electronic regulator paired with a quartz crystal. Operating without a battery, it is a mechanical watch with precision equivalent to that of 100% quartz watches. The Spring Drive offers an accuracy of +/- 15 seconds per month and a 72-hour power reserve. Through the sapphire crystal case back, we can admire the movement, and it's difficult to see anything other than a classic automatic. The bridges are finely decorated and beautifully beveled. Objectively speaking, it's a very good watch for several reasons. These include its extremely precise Spring Drive movement and its incredibly smooth sweeping seconds hand, the attention to detail and perfectly executed Zaratsu polishing, as well as its exquisitely textured dial. And yet, the magic didn't work on me. Despite its many qualities, I sold it. I found it too cold and lacking in character. It's hard to explain, but it didn't evoke much emotion in me. Although the Spring Drive movement is magnificent to behold, perhaps its perfection lacked life for me? Perhaps I saw the use of quartz in a mechanical watch as cheating? Or perhaps, being from Geneva, I'm more attuned to Swiss watchmakers, their long history, their image, and their prestige?
