The Glashütte Original PanoMaticLunar is one of those watches that you can't miss from across the room. I gravitated towards the white/silver and green dials, but the green won me over with its rich, saturated color. This works brilliantly with the model's signature asymmetric layout, as the different subdial finishings create a dynamic effect in the light. What could feel awkward or imbalanced on paper instead comes across as calm, balanced, and confident, combining a kind of East German restraint, which can sometimes turn stodgy and conservative, with unexpectedly bold visual presence. — The execution throughout is excellent. The movement is classic Glashütte: beautifully finished throughout, with a hand-decorated swan-neck regulator through the display back that reminds you of traditional regional watchmaking. The big date snaps over with satisfying precision, the moonphase is elegantly integrated, and the bracelet is far better than you would expect from a relatively dressy watch, robust, well-finished, and equipped with one of the best on-the-fly adjustment clasps around. As always with the brand, the brushing and overall case finishing are absolutely top tier, albeit simpler than with its SeaQ line. The main compromise with the PanoMaticLunar is thickness. Combined with the fairly traditional mid-case architecture, the watch can occasionally give off a slight “hockey puck” impression from certain angles. Thankfully, the deeply curved lugs help it wear better than the measurements suggest, but this isn't a small watch. Because of this size, the complications, and the bold dial, I wouldn't classify it as a true dress watch. It's certainly not a sports watch, but it straddles the line between dressy and everyday. Putting it on the bracelet accentuates that element of sportiness. That said, while the bracelet is extremely well built, it could benefit from a more dramatic taper to give the overall package a touch more elegance on wrist. — Still, the PanoMaticLunar succeeds because it embraces oddball symmetry and bold colors with extremely well-executed technical mastery and traditional watch making. It’s technically refined, visually distinctive, and full of thoughtful details that reward long-term ownership. — One note on pricing. I picked this watch up on the secondary market. At retail, it is a more difficult decision as prices are fairly high and competition is fierce. The retail price is deserved, but second hand the value is ridiculously good.
