CAPTA, publicly presented in 2026, is a young independent French watch brand led by Alexandre Dib and Trystan Jego; it speaks to enthusiasts of creative chronographs, legible design, proportions conceived for real life and participatory projects that seek to propose a new idea without rejecting the heritage of mechanical complications.
CAPTA is built around a very personal story. The two founders explain that they have been friends since childhood, followed different paths in crafts connected with material, design or construction, then came together around a shared certainty: it was time to give form to a more personal watchmaking vision. The brand claims a measured ambition, closer to the right gesture than to loud demonstration.
The CAPTA name comes from a discovery in the numismatic archives of the city of Nîmes: a coin bearing the inscription “AEGYPTO CAPTA”, referring to the Roman Empire’s conquest of Egypt. This local root gives the project a strong cultural base, connected to territory, history and the idea of capturing what surrounds the creators in order to reinterpret it. CAPTA therefore turns an ancient reference into a contemporary method of creation.
The brand’s approach rests on a desire for intentional simplicity. Nothing should be added unless it serves an aesthetic or technical reason. The watch should be able to move from the office to a terrace by the water, from the city to nature, without becoming an incomprehensible niche object. This philosophy gives CAPTA an interesting position between an enthusiast’s watch and a watch genuinely wearable every day.
The first model, CAPTA Omnia Uniscale, opens the Omnia collection with a very clear proposition: bringing together three historical chronograph scales within one visual system. Where vintage chronographs often layered tachymeter, telemeter and pulsometer at the risk of creating strong graphic density, CAPTA chooses to unify the three readings within one coherent track.
The principle is easy to understand. The tachymeter measures average speed over a known distance, the telemeter estimates distance through sound propagation, and the pulsometer measures heart rate over a given number of beats. The three scales can be read at the same moment, without one scale overwhelming the others. The main innovation is therefore not to add a function, but to make several functions legible without overload.
The subtlety of the project comes from the position of the scale. The Uniscale function is not printed directly on the dial; it is laser-engraved beneath the surface of the sapphire crystal. At first glance, the watch looks like a balanced three-hand watch with a chronograph counter at six o’clock. When light or attention changes, the hidden information appears. CAPTA gives the wearer the choice to see the complication rather than suffer it permanently.
The dial also works with depth. A peripheral rim runs almost all around the watch, interrupted at six o’clock, while the dial rises close to the inside of the double-domed sapphire crystal. The applied Super-LumiNova BGW9 indexes appear white by day and blue by night, and the hands are inspired by tribal paddles, with a central cabochon intended to hide the pinion. The whole seeks to create an effect of miniature architecture rather than a simple flat surface.
This visual construction makes the watch more interesting than a quick technical sheet might suggest. The crystal creates a glass-box effect, the engraving becomes almost an optical layer, and the dial finishes change according to the colours: sunburst for blues, parmas and greens, sandblasted for sands and greys. The success of the model will depend greatly on the real quality of this depth on the wrist.
The case seeks a balance between originality and wearability. The sheet indicates a diagonal diameter of forty-one millimeters, but a stated wearing feel close to thirty-nine millimeters, with a lug-to-lug distance of forty-six millimeters and a “drop to drop” measurement of forty-two millimeters on bracelet. Thickness is stated at 12.1 millimeters, or nine millimeters without the crystal. CAPTA therefore insists on proportions more than on the raw diameter figure.
The crown is placed on the left, in a so-called destro configuration, in order to allow a right-handed wearer to operate the chronograph with the right thumb. The case stands on four lugs, with twist-end lugs, a polished ring around the sapphire crystal and a grooved collar filled with coloured lacquer matching the dial. These details give the case its own identity, without depending only on the Uniscale dial.
The material choice reinforces the logic of daily use. The case is made from 316L steel with a hardening surface treatment stated at 1,200 Vickers, in order to increase scratch resistance, and water resistance is stated at eleven atmospheres. The solid caseback preserves thickness, protects ergonomic coherence and receives an engraved explanation of how the Uniscale works. The brand clearly wants to avoid a showpiece watch, beautiful in photos but fragile in real life.
The selected movement is a CAPTA Omnia Uniscale powered by a Sellita SW562, a manually wound mechanical chronograph running at four hertz. CAPTA indicates that it worked with Sellita and adapted the movement by removing the small seconds in order to keep only the thirty-minute chronograph counter, in line with the logic that “every element must earn its place”.
The technical sheet announces a typical power reserve of sixty-three hours, official accuracy of plus or minus five seconds per day, and prototypes indicated between minus one and plus two seconds per day. These figures are ambitious for a young brand, but they will need to be confirmed on watches delivered and worn by the first owners. The seriousness of the project will be judged as much on production consistency as on the beauty of the initial idea.
The ideal profile is an enthusiast who wants to participate in the birth of a brand, likes chronographs but does not necessarily want a dial saturated with information, and accepts the risk inherent in a Kickstarter campaign. The project will suit less those who want an already established brand, a global service network, predictable resale value or an immediately available watch. CAPTA requires a curious buyer, sensitive to reading innovation and ready to accompany a first production.
CAPTA is aimed at enthusiasts who want to discover a young French brand with a real starting idea, a local identity and a legible technical proposition. The watch appeals through its unified scale, engraved sapphire crystal, left-side crown, hardened case, territory-rooted colours and ambition to make the chronograph clearer without impoverishing it. The choice should take into account taste for crowdfunding, trust placed in a first series, real wrist comfort, service after delivery and price relevance compared with competing mechanical chronographs.
