French Flair!

I must admit it: I've always had a soft spot for watches from the 70s that assert a strong identity. Those that don't try to please everyone, but offer a vision. This Apose Douz Celadon is part of that tradition, a watch that boldly proclaims its French roots. Just turn the watch over to read the inscription engraved under the case: "So French." An almost provocative phrase in a watchmaking world largely dominated by Switzerland. And yet, with this Douz on your wrist, you quickly understand that this phrase isn't just a slogan. It conveys an ambition, almost a state of mind. You could even see an echo of the famous phrase attributed to Napoleon: "Impossible is not French." Because designing a chic-sport watch with a strong personality today, with a movement stemming from the renaissance of French watchmaking, already demonstrates a certain audacity. ▶️ The first thing that catches the eye is the case. You immediately sense—at least for me—a strong 1970s influence, a period when watchmaking explored new forms and embraced more architectural lines. And I love that! The Apose Douz seems to capture this spirit without succumbing to mere nostalgia. The case has a strong presence, yet remains perfectly balanced on the wrist. The fluted, almost sunburst bezel plays with the light and adds a unique dimension to the overall design. It's a detail you quickly notice, then rediscover with every movement of your wrist. This finish brings the watch to life and accentuates its sporty and elegant character. The crown, too, deserves a closer look. Its finishing clearly reflects the high standards the brand aimed for in this project. It symbolizes, in a way, the transformation of an ambition—to design a watch that is "so French"—into a concrete reality. Every detail of the case has been carefully considered, such as the sculpted sides that add a beautiful visual dynamism. ▶️ A dial enhanced by the Celadon green color, a unique feature in watchmaking Its distinctive pale green hue—likely inspired by antique Korean and Chinese ceramics—immediately brings an almost unexpected visual softness to a watch with such a bold design. The surface has a slightly powdery finish, which subtly diffuses the light and gives the dial a very pleasing depth. This softness contrasts with the highly graphic presence of the applied hour markers, characteristic of watches from the early 1970s. There is a certain boldness to this elegant dial: the lines are clean, the hour markers have a real presence, yet the overall effect remains perfectly harmonious. We also note the work done on the typography of the cardinal hour markers, whose design provides a very successful visual balance. This kind of detail may seem anecdotal at first glance, but it always contributes to the overall personality of the watch. It is often in these small graphic decisions that a brand's stylistic identity is revealed. The hands offer a particularly interesting touch. Their bases adopt a hexagonal shape, a subtle reference to the silhouette of France. It's a detail that isn't immediately noticeable, but it contributes to the overall identity of the watch. A kind of hidden, almost intimate signature, which reinforces the feeling that every element of this Douz has been designed to serve a specific purpose. ▶️ A French caliber, of course The Douz Céladon is powered by an automatic movement from France Ébauches, a manufacturer that is contributing to the revival of French watchmaking. It is always interesting to see these movements appear in contemporary watches, as they tell a much broader local industrial story than just the mechanics. This caliber offers a comfortable power reserve, more than sufficient for everyday wear, but a little short compared to the Pequignet Initial movement that powered the N°3-100 collection. One can sometimes hear the characteristic whir of the oscillating weight, this subtle mechanical reminder that discreetly accompanies the movements of the wrist. Some enthusiasts love this sensation, others barely notice it, and still others are concerned by it… but it serves as a reminder that the watch lives to the rhythm of its wearer. The accuracy of -4/+4 seconds per day is achieved thanks to adjustments made by the brand's watchmaker, demonstrating a genuine commitment to quality in the final assembly. However, one might regret the solid case back, as it obscures the impressive architecture of the France Ébauches caliber. In a watch that proudly proclaims its French horological identity, it would have been interesting to be able to admire this movement. ▶️ The steel bracelet is another triumph of this Douz. Its design integrates perfectly with the case and fully contributes to the watch's chic character. The small links offer great flexibility and allow for a very natural fit on the wrist. Even without a highly precise adjustment at the clasp, the bracelet's design generally makes it easy to find a perfectly fitting size. Once on my wrist, I quickly forget I'm wearing the watch, which is often the sign of a well-designed bracelet. The comfort is genuine, and the overall impression is one of very pleasing coherence… and a watch unlike any other. ▶️ After wearing this Apose Douz Celadon for a few days, you gradually understand the brand's philosophy. This isn't a watch that seeks to impress with a spectacular technical display. Rather, it offers a vision: that of a chic and sporty French watch with a strong design. Its visual appeal naturally attracts attention, but its comfort and balance make it a pleasure to wear. Priced at €2,950 on a steel bracelet, this Apose Douz Celadon offers an interesting take on contemporary watchmaking. A watch that doesn't try to copy established codes, but instead asserts a clear identity. A watch that tells a story of French industry, and an aesthetic one at that. And above all, a watch that reminds us that beyond the great historical houses, watchmaking can still be a field of expression and ambition. 😎 My "Mood Board" with this Apose Douz Celadon: Film: The Sunday Woman – Luigi Comencini (1975) Car: Venturi 260 LM Music: More Than This – Roxy Music (1982) All technical specifications below or on the brand's website.
