The Seiko SSB455P1—when I saw it in my jeweler's window, I went in, tried it on, and bought it without a second thought, all in 15 minutes flat! I absolutely fell in love with this model: the integrated bracelet is incredibly comfortable, the crystal is sapphire, the Japanese 8T63 quartz movement is highly accurate and reliable, the dial is exceptional in my opinion, the case is brushed with both matte and polished finishes, and the 40mm diameter makes it ideal for all wrist sizes—sporty-chic in all its glory. For me, it has no flaws, except perhaps that they should have made it automatic. It's a welcome change from Prospex and Seiko 5s, a perfect everyday watch.

Lorus is a Seiko brand, quality watches at reduced prices, €150 for this model, quartz chronograph, sporty look, 43mm diameter, unfortunately no sapphire crystal, 316L steel, screw-down case back, 100m water resistant, reliable, precise watch, what more could you ask for at a reduced budget, Japanese Seiko movement known and recognized.

Good value for money

It was love at first sight when I found this watch. A unique design, a Seiko VK63 mecaquartz movement, a sapphire crystal, a 316L stainless steel case with a black PVD coating, a screw-down case back with a beautiful engraving, and a stunning dial if you appreciate this kind of decoration. It comes with a white nylon strap, and I've added two more silicone straps, one black and one bright white, which are more comfortable than the slightly stiff nylon. The watch is very pleasant to wear, very lightweight, and discreet on the wrist thanks to its 39mm diameter. It's a limited edition of 300 pieces.

The Hand

Victorinox Pro Dive 300m titanium, a watch designed to face all situations, the automatic and Swiss G-Shock, black PVD treated titanium case, rubber strap, SW-220-1 movement, a quality watch, robust with its own DNA, despite its 43mm diameter, it knows how to be forgotten on the wrist due to its lightness, personally I prefer it on the yellow silicone strap matching the touches of yellow on the dial and hands.

Swiss Army Knife

The U-Boat Darkmoon 44mm was an impulse buy due to its originality and look. The dial, along with the entire mechanism (a Swiss Ronda 712.3 quartz movement), is bathed in oil. It's a high-quality movement, and the watch comes on a signed leather strap with an Italian design. The case is bronze PVD-coated steel, giving it a vintage look, as is the bronze dial. I've only had it for a few months, and the leather strap is still quite stiff. Combined with the 44mm diameter, it's not the most comfortable watch to wear; perhaps I should try it with its rubber strap.

UFO impulse buy

This is the third automatic watch I've bought, a Tissot PRS516 Extreme chronograph in red. It has a sporty look, is 43mm in diameter, and features a steel case on a black and red rubber strap reminiscent of a car tire. The sapphire crystal case back is decorated with a car rim motif. Again, it's a Swiss watch, with excellent build quality and finish, though its diameter makes it a bit bulky.

1st chronograph

I present to you a Seiko chronograph that is not very common in France. It is an Ananta model (which means infinity in Sanskrit), reference SRQ003. It is an automatic mechanical chronograph, equipped with the 8R28 movement. This model is part of the first Ananta collection of 2009, unveiled at Baselworld in 2010. Seiko designers had "carte blanche" to imagine a high-end Seiko collection, for the first time, offered to the world market. The designers were inspired, for the cases of this collection, and therefore the case of this chronograph, by the Japanese "Katanas" sabers of the Samurai. The sides of the case are sculpted, with a double curvature that evokes the Katana. The level of requirement of the finishes, the dial, the polishing of the case, the bezel, the crown and the chronograph pushers, is very high. The zaratsu "mirror" polish of the sides is exceptional!! 🤩. The watch is massive, thick, and yet, I who like a relative content of the dimensions of my watches, I love this Seiko with its radical, uncompromising, inspired design. It combines everything I like in watchmaking: original style, watchmaking know-how, high technology... I never tire of looking at all the details of this watch.

Seiko Ananta Chronograph "Katana"

The Seiko Crown Chronograph reference 45899 is a unique timepiece, both understated in its design and profoundly significant in its place within Japanese watchmaking history. Dating from July 1964, it marks a pivotal moment for Seiko, and indeed for the global watch industry, coinciding with the Tokyo Olympic Games. Owning and wearing this watch today is like carrying a piece of that era on your wrist. Powered by the Seiko 5719 mechanical caliber, this Crown Chronograph showcases the brand's technical expertise in the early 1960s. At a time when Seiko was striving to establish itself as a credible competitor to Swiss manufacturers, the development of mechanical chronograph movements was a crucial undertaking. The 5719 caliber perfectly embodies this ambition: simple, robust, reliable, and above all, ingenious. Here, there is no complex chronograph with multiple counters, but rather a single-pusher system of exceptional functional purity. A single press starts the 60-second timer, a second press stops it, and the mechanism then resets automatically. This minimalist, almost pedagogical approach was designed for direct and intuitive use, particularly in the context of sporting competitions of the time.

This deliberate simplicity is also reflected in the original white dial, perfectly legible and balanced by two central hands. The overall design exudes Japanese precision: nothing superfluous, everything serves the function. The stainless steel case, generously sized for its era (45 x 37 mm and 12 mm thick), offers a strong presence on the wrist without ever being excessive. The case back is undoubtedly one of the most poignant details of this watch: the Olympic flame is engraved on it, along with the date of manufacture, July 1964. This powerful historical marker definitively anchors this piece in the context of the Tokyo Olympic Games.
The example I own is in very good overall condition. The strap was replaced with a new, non-original model, while the watch itself was serviced, without attempting to alter it. I made the deliberate choice not to polish it. The micro-marks, the traces of time, are an integral part of its identity. They tell its story, its history, and, in my eyes, reinforce its authenticity. It's a philosophy I often apply: preserve history rather than erase it.

I bought this watch on a pure impulse. A huge Seiko enthusiast—I've owned over a hundred pieces—I'm constantly on the lookout, with alerts set on sales websites, always eager to discover a model I haven't yet encountered. When I came across this Crown Chronograph 45899, I didn't know it. And yet, it was an instant connection. An immediate purchase, without hesitation. And looking back, no regrets: it has become one of the centerpieces of my collection. The modern reissues offered by Seiko pay homage to this model, but owning the original from 1964 is a completely different experience. Wearing this Crown Chronograph today means wearing a rare watch, imbued with meaning, and proudly embodying Seiko's watchmaking heritage. It's a watch I deeply appreciate, one I treasure, and one I wear with genuine pleasure, aware of how fortunate I am to own it.

Review of my Seiko Crown Chronograph 45899 (1964)

Found for a handful of euros, this very cool Seiko Sports 100 M929 5020 from the 80s was sold immediately after installing a new battery. I, who didn't really wear quartz, except for a solar one to show off, was completely hooked on the excellent look of this watch. It is in great condition and is really nice to wear. The bracelet is light, signed and easy to adjust. I am the first to be surprised but I love this charm! I really enjoy wearing it and playing with its different functions!

A classy Seiko LCD for a handful of euros

Years ago, I fell in love with this particular Seiko Chronograph, reference 5717. Before then, I wasn't a huge fan of Seiko because I honestly wasn't aware of the diversity of models that the brand produced in the 60s/70s. I had Omega's Chronostop in mind as THE reference for such a watch, but I wasn't ready to buy one.

I remember browsing the web when I stumbled upon this model that absolutely stunned me! I asked myself: What is this thing? After some research, I realized that it was a derivative of the limited-edition chronograph that Seiko had made for the Tokyo Olympics in 1964. I did look for the historical model, but the prices were well above the 300 € that I ended up paying for this watch from my memory.

It works perfectly, the bezel is fantastic, even though I would have preferred the plastic one from reference 5719. It's a watch that brings a smile to your face - simple, efficient, as the Japanese know how to do. It's worth noting that this model has been reissued in the Presage range with a rather successful look, but of course, it doesn't have the charm of the vintage piece!
