I think the Longines brand has been etched in my mind since I was a child, due to its historical sponsorships in Formula 1 and horse racing, and its association with high-end Swiss watchmaking. It's surely this image of a major Swiss brand, with its beautiful products and a price point much more affordable than other iconic brands, that made it my holy grail in 2025. I set my sights on the Spirit Zulu Time. The anniversary advertising campaign for 100 years of the Zulu Time at Longines certainly played a part. And besides, if it suits Superman, it's bound to be a great watch... But with so many models available, the process was still long before the final choice. I eliminated the gold or titanium models from the equation, as they were too expensive for me, and settled on the 39mm for my 17cm wrist. It took me a few fitting sessions in the store to choose between the sunburst blue dial, the black with a two-tone bezel, the anthracite with a British racing green bezel... I finally settled on the anthracite with the midnight blue bezel. This model is truly versatile. The gold gilt on the four hands and the applied Arabic numeral hour markers gives it a dressy look. The dark, almost black dial and the 39mm diameter lend it a discreet air. And finally, the blue bezel adds a casual touch. This watch can be worn just as easily for formal occasions with a dress shirt as it can for everyday wear with a sweater or t-shirt. Its other strengths: it plays beautifully with light. The numeral rings constantly shift from a brilliant gold reflection that almost completely obscures the inner color of the marker, to the opposite, with cream markers and a subtle outline. Another striking play of light occurs on the railway track's rehaut, where a bevel creates random golden reflections. Less noticeable on web pages, the font color of the date disc isn't white but beige, matching the hour markers and minute track. The same goes for the numerals on the bezel, which are off-white. I think it creates a nice coherence with the overall vintage look. Any downsides? Not really. No on-the-fly micro-adjustment of the clasp. I find the engraving on the crown poorly done. The sandblasting isn't attractive, and the logo is almost illegible. But these are minor details. I'm not even mentioning the COSC certification, GMT, and domed sapphire crystal, which are readily available elsewhere… In short, I'm very happy with this purchase, which holds a prominent place in my collection.
