The Kudoke 3 is a contemporary independent timepiece, the fruit of the craftsmanship of German watchmaker Stefan Kudoke. It is part of the HANDwerk collection and stands out for its unconventional hour display that makes you wonder if you're looking at retrograde time... but no, just ingenuity. ¤ A captivating and ingenious time display The Kudoke 3 offers a unique display that requires a second glance. In reality, it's a classic two-hand movement (no seconds hand), but it actually has four hands. The minutes are indicated in the classic manner by a large, thermally blued hand. The time is read using a three-armed hand of varying lengths, pointing to three arc-shaped scales on a double-level lower dial. This clever system allows only one hour marker to be displayed at a time (except at hours 2, 6, and 10, where two are visible). I was captivated by this ingenious and unusual display, and I eagerly examine those brief moments when two hour hands are visible. ¤ The "frosted gray" dial: a first link with traditional German watchmaking The dial is in two parts, rhodium-plated with a fine "frosted" texture, a Kudoke signature, inspired by the classic finishes of historic Saxon pocket watches. The double-level effect of the dial, with its curved opening, adds visual depth. However, the sleekness of the lower half of the frame may be too much compared to the upper part. A new "flake" finish has been available since mid-2025, and this one further enhances this lower section. ¤ at the heart: the handmade Kaliber 1 The Kudoke 3 is powered by the Kaliber 1, an in-house hand-wound movement with a 46-hour power reserve and 28,800 vibrations/hour (4Hz). The decoration is hand-finished, including a frosted finish on the bridges and a balance cock hand-engraved with the infinity symbol. An alternative finish for the movement is also possible. The entire bridge is then engraved. While very impressive, I found this finish too elaborate for my taste. This movement is housed in a 39 mm polished steel case that is 10.3 mm thick, which seems very reasonable given the integration of the two-tiered dial. ¤ remarkable value for money for independent watchmaking Its starting price is approximately €9,350 excluding VAT. I consider this price point to be excellent for this combination of originality, in-house movement, and true handcraftsmanship (including optional customizable finishes and engravings). ¤ In conclusion: a craftsmanship that bridges the gap between tradition and contemporary design. The Kudoke 3 is the perfect balance between classic design and horological extravagance. It is a testament to Stefan Kudoke's expertise, offering a witty time complication and a level of finish usually reserved for much more expensive pieces. For me, it is an ideal choice for anyone looking for a watch with personality, combining the tradition of German watchmaking with a contemporary approach.
