The surprising thing about Citizen is that first impressions are never the right ones. I own three of the brand's models, and it's the same thing every time:
J1 "What the hell is this thing?"
J2 "I want it right away."
J3 "No, sorry, I'm not selling it. No, even for the price of a Fifty Phatom, I'm too attached to it, and I can dive with it..."
This Aqualand is a special edition for its fortieth anniversary.
It's an exact reproduction (I haven't checked) of the watch worn by Enzo in The Big Blue in 1988; it was the first real wristwatch with an integrated electronic depth gauge.
Compared to the latest models on the market, the difference is only aesthetic, but what an aesthetic:
The crown, the four buttons, the hands (hour and second), and the depth gauge grid are gold. The case back is unique. The case is a black limited edition scuba tank, not the yellow one on other Promaster models. A nice yellow scuba tank-shaped keychain is also included. There's a strap extension for wearing it over a wetsuit: practical, simple, effective, and robust.
As for the rest, there's no change: I measured a diameter of 38.2 mm, 50.4 mm with the depth gauge, a height of 14.8 mm, and a lug-to-lug of 47.8 mm. It's very comfortable to wear; the depth gauge doesn't bother me at all. It's not that big, fits the wrist, and is so charismatic...
I haven't been able to use the depth gauge and its many functions yet, but the digital part has all the essential features for urban life: date, multiple alarms, chronograph, and... the time: it's actually very practical because the two time displays are, of course, separable, giving you a second time zone. Regarding its measured accuracy: the digital time is accurate in two months, and the hands show a one-second advance in two months. I recently heard a master watchmaker who repairs all brands and at both extreme price levels claim that the best quartz watches in the world are produced by Citizen.
Between luxury brands that produce diving watches that rarely dive below the bottom of the pool; classic divers with no function other than the time, and often much more expensive than the Aqualand; charmless digital watches; and dive computers that can't be imported above the surface, this Citizen model IS.
If I had to find a flaw, I looked, and I almost found it: I would have liked a light for the window, but I had forgotten that Citizen watches are equipped with blinding luminescence. I would love to see the JP2007-17W version shine in the night with its fully luminescent green dial. This anniversary model is the same price as the two non-limited versions. I own an equally charming Promaster Marine Eco-drive, but for just 100 euros more, we have a real war machine on our wrist.

The perfect compromise

This limited edition model pays homage to the eye of the Velociraptors featured in the first episode of Jurassic Park. We had to choose with the orange version of the T. Rex. I preferred this lime green "wink" because I didn't have a green dial; because it's a nice green, bright and acidic, and classic greens are boring; because green is more in keeping with my idea of a dinosaur (even though I've never seen one, and even though I suspect that in real life, they must have been less fluorescent); and finally, because Raptors are cooler and more cunning than Tyrannosaurus Rexes, even though I've never met one.

For the color and texture (which I find even more incredible), Awake used a traditional Vietnamese technique that consists of covering a silver leaf with lacquer. The result is truly successful, the variations in the light are infinite. For the rest, Awake had the good idea of not overdoing it to leave the iridescence of the dial to the forefront: no unnecessary literature, just the name and the three claws of the Raptors (on the T. Rex model there are only two) between the center of the watch and the index at 6 o'clock. The indexes take the shape of the reptile's claws. In very small print, it says "hand made." This is more original and less controversial than the eternal "Swiss made" label, especially since Switzerland didn't exist in the Cretaceous period. The hands are simple and effective. In my opinion, the greatest achievement of this watch is its luminescence: Superluminova wasn't applied to the hands, but rather the hands and indexes are coated with Luminova. As soon as the light fades, it gives a surprising and pleasing impression of levitation.


The 39mm case is simple and beautifully crafted, with short lugs allowing for a seamless fit on the wrist. The modified La Joux-Perret caliber is decorated with a foliage border that references the animal's habitat, as is the phrase "Life finds a way," a phrase uttered by James Goldblum in the film (on the T. Rex version, it reads: "Spared no expense").
The power reserve is decent at 68 hours; I have a deviation of about 30 seconds per The watch is water resistant to 5 ATM.
I find the balance perfect: there are numerous references to the film, yet the watch is particularly understated; even if you look closely, the untrained eye wouldn't guess it's a tribute to the film.
For me, the downside is the strap. It's salmon leather, made in France. In the photo, I thought the choice of a "reptilian" texture and color was clever, but not everyone can be a dinosaur...

In real life, the salmon scales are smooth, green, and iridescent. If you're going for the total Raptors look, I think it would have been better to use an embossed leather, with well-defined scales for a more organic look. Green is fine, but I would have preferred more contrast with the dial, especially since its iridescent treatment competes with the brightness of the dial. The Raptor's iris shines brightly, but as far as I know, glitter doesn't pour on the body. Anyway, I think I'll change the bracelet soon. Too bad, otherwise the nod to the film would have been perfect.

But of course, that dial...
In real life, it appears less "red and black" and more like a gradient from brown to orange, which explains why it's nicknamed NEGRONI, like the cocktail made with gin, Campari, and red vermouth.
I was drawn to Sinn's 556 model, the brand's most refined, the most legible, the ultimate tool watch that can be worn anywhere and in any circumstance, but the classic black dial seemed a little too... classic.
Sinn regularly releases variations of its bestseller. When I saw this 200-piece limited edition, I immediately fell for it. No date, stick indexes (which I prefer to the large 3-6-9-12), no unnecessary fluff, and the 5-link steel bracelet is also my favorite.
The dial and exclusivity unfortunately come at a price, as it costs an additional 800 euros compared to the classic version.
The proportions are perfect, and it's very comfortable to wear thanks to the jubilee bracelet that hugs the wrist and its curved lugs.
The satin-finished steel case is solid, and the bulge at the crown gives it a very "industrial" look, reminiscent of a German weapon of war, understated and effective. But, thanks to the delicacy of the sunray dial, the Germanic rigor fades, and the Italian gentleman can swirl the ice cubes in his cocktail glass.
The watch is water-resistant to 200 meters, the crown is screwed down, the time is easily readable day and night, and the deviation is a few seconds per month.
The transparent sapphire crystal case back reveals a soberly decorated but attractive movement.
The case is well finished, and includes spring bars, a bottle of oil, and an additional black calfskin strap with the appropriate tool.

Not just for the dial...

An octagonal G-Shock model with all the usual functions, but with a "manga" treatment on the dial, as well as on the case and strap. In my opinion, it's this overall treatment that makes this model so appealing; decorating only the dial would have been much less interesting. The result is very nice in real life. It's a good compromise: the overprints found throughout add a quirky and fun touch, but the watch isn't extravagant.

It's coherent and very readable.

This edition existed (because it quickly sold out on the CASIO website) in two colors: this blue and a more sober white. Even if it's a throwback to the comic book, I preferred this more playful pop blue. I don't think you could have chosen both colors.

On the dial, the indexes are raised, which creates a sense of depth and three-dimensionality. The most amusing detail is the comic book bubble-shaped day of the week timer.
I regret that the light for the small seconds and date subdial doesn't come from the dial itself, but is located between the 4 and 5 o'clock markers. I'm nitpicking, but it would have been more logical to position the Light button there rather than at the top right.

The case size is perfectly reasonable; the watch weighs only 50 grams. The absence of a crown at 3 o'clock and the fact that the part in contact with the hand is not rounded, but one side of the octagon, make it extremely comfortable to wear. On the back of the case, we find the onomatopoeia "DON," which means "BOOM!" in Japanese. The strap is fully decorated and particularly supple, and is equipped with quick-release fasteners.

This watch is made in Japan, which isn't usually the case for models in this series, and at this price point. And it costs only 30 euros more than its classic counterparts.

MANGA

The only point of my review is to highlight two changes Casio made that justified the purchase of this model.
Among the other G-Shock models, I was drawn to the "nardo" gray: it brings a techno feel to the watch, and it's a nice change from black, not to mention the flashy colors of some models, which are so painful to the eyes.
Moreover, this GA-2300 model also comes in a blinding fluorescent pink-fuchsia, in black, in white, and in this gray, which I find by far the most beautiful, and which pairs well with the orange hands.
The dial is black. From a distance, it looks very minimalist: gray strap and case, black dial, and only the two orange hands. Up close, it's maximalist: an X right in the middle of the dial, three windows: one for the date, one for the seconds, and one analog window at 9 o'clock for the days. This aperture isn't at the same level as the two digital dials, which aren't at the same height as the X, which sits below the hands. This relief, combined with a brightness that also varies depending on the "layer," results in a dial that changes significantly in appearance depending on the distance and brightness.
Otherwise, we find the usual functions of "mid-range" G-Schools. I particularly like the time zone change: you select the city, first the hands move apart for easier reading, then they move, a very pleasant ballet. I regret that the white LED isn't very bright and that the Super Illuminator is actually very average.
Now for the two points that, in my opinion, make all the difference: with a case measuring 45.4mm in diameter and 11.6mm thick, the watch is much smaller than other models, the GA-2100 series for example. It's a joy to wear; the dimensions are perfect, and it's very light and comfortable. And this is even more evident with the second evolution:
I don't know if this is the first time from G-Schock, but here the strap isn't attached to the case: the lugs are equipped with spring bars that allow the strap to rotate freely, which considerably improves comfort. Once on, the watch is perfectly flat, making it easy to slip into a case. Above all, changing the strap is easy. It was clear that I wasn't going to keep the resin strap and opt for an orange leather strap. I was lucky enough to find a 24mm alligator "solo" strap at ABP. These straps are available in a single copy and are made from scrap leather, meaning they are offered at unbeatable prices at this level of manufacturing. It cost me 75 euros. I was able to choose the lug width, the length, and the buckle. I opted for the black PVD one.
I think the choice of a leather strap makes sense with a watch with hands. From a distance, it looks like a classic watch; that's its analog side. Up close, you'll discover a digital watch packed with features, always on time, and virtually unbreakable. The best of both worlds.

2 valuable developments at G-Shock

I don't have any particular attraction to Omega. Only one model, simple and historic, caught my eye:
The Railmaster, a historic railway workers' watch ; ) because it's antimagnetic and very precise. I don't know how many railway workers wore it, certainly very few, otherwise the trains would have been on time...
It was the black swan of the collection that attracted me: the one with the denim-blue dial and the orange seconds hand inspired by the seams of the famous trousers. And I arrived at the right time (and especially the right place) because I don't think this collection was ever very successful, and this model in particular. It didn't stay in the catalog for long, which is why you can find it at a really attractive price.
I find the dimensions and proportions to be truly perfect. I'm surprised that the height is 12.7 mm, because on the wrist, it seems much less thick. Perhaps it's due to the sapphire crystal that's flush with the bezel? The large dial opening contributes to perfect readability. The simplicity of the lines leaves the dial in the spotlight: a discreet and original blue with fine vertical striations of different sizes reminiscent of denim. This texture allows for play with the light; something that isn't clearly highlighted in photos. This is often the case, but this watch is truly (really) more beautiful in real life than in the photo. The thin central white cross "dresses" the dial, and the elements converge toward the center: at the periphery, the railway delineates the terrain, the triangular indexes pointing toward the cross, everything directs the eye toward the brick-colored central dot of the second hand. This dial is more complex than it appears, and truly very pleasant to look at. At night, readability is also a priority, with the indexes and hands of a good size. The luminescence is adequate, but above all, a beautiful "menthol" blue.
Nothing to say about the steel bracelet, simple and effective. I would have chosen the denim strap with loops that echo the orange "sewing" of the seconds hand, but I hate NATO straps, and the total "denim" look would have spoiled the understated, offbeat elegance of this watch. The watch is very comfortable to wear; it fits snugly against the wrist, and I find it surprisingly light for an all-steel watch.
A pioneer in anti-magnetism, water-resistant to 150 meters, screw-down crown, beautifully engraved caseback, and precision that I measured between -5 and -15 seconds per month... nothing is left to chance.
Finally, I find the case superb and very well designed, with an integrated travel case.

A watch for teenagers from Omega

I'd never seen this watch "in person," but on paper, its specifications interested me, with the possibility of returning it if I didn't like it, which seemed easy. Well, I kept it...
Firstly, because it immediately suited my wrist: the size and shape of the case, comfort, lightness, and the strap's closure system. Also, for several technical reasons:
- The case is mounted on a spring system that allows it to follow the movements of the wrist. The watch is very comfortable to wear, but I have no idea if this is the cause. This is also supposed to protect the caliber in the event of an impact; fortunately, I don't have the answer yet.
- The dial is meteorite plated over rose gold. I find the dial brighter than in the photos. I like it or not. Personally, it suits me; it adds shine, and depending on the light, the meteorite (Widmanstätten) patterns stand out more or less. Note that the date window is very well integrated.
- The Sellita caliber is COSC certified (certificate provided). I've owned the watch for a month, and the deviation is minus 2 seconds.
- Finally, their patented strap attachment system allows for very quick size adjustment. However, I find that the three-layer construction: two strands + the carbon buckle, feels a bit bulky on the wrist.
I haven't owned this model for long, but so far, I'm very satisfied with it.

Very technical watch

This watch arrives at a time when my watchmaking knowledge has greatly improved, and with what I consider a sufficient understanding of the main price points and models on the market. I was therefore able to specifically research brands to choose a model at a reasonable price, with the following features: COSC, colored dial, contrasting hands, small diameter/thickness, all steel.

So I found Formex, a small brand. Initially, I was thinking of going for a classic blue dial, but then, in a smaller format, I saw this mother-of-pearl blue dial. I gave it a try, and it was a very pleasant surprise.
It changes a lot depending on the light: sometimes dolphin gray, sometimes petrol blue, or even a more classic blue. The horizontal lines add contrast, sometimes visible, sometimes barely visible. The text written in white appears or disappears depending on the angle of the light. The hands are always clearly visible.

The bracelet also feels excellent to wear. Its half-link extension adjustment can be done with one hand. The polished edges on the links (generally square) create a stunning disco ball effect.

The case is simple, 10.25mm thick, which I consider good for a 3-hand watch with a date display. Especially since there's a spring mechanism, allowing for a bit of flexibility when bending the wrist. A rather gimmicky mechanism, in my opinion, and not very useful.

Since this watch arrived, I've changed my wearing habits (previously one for winter, one for summer). It's about alternating between my three as much as possible, so as to never run out of power. A fun exercise in watch management, I understand the importance of power reserve.

In short, a watch that I love to look at for its dial and hands.
