Spinnaker is a watch brand initially based in England, founded in 2013, and now appears to manufacture its watches in Hong Kong. In any case, the watch box came directly from there when purchased from their website (don't forget the import tax, which explains why you'll always get a 20% discount on watches to offset this tax for European buyers!).

With this watch, there are some good points, even very good ones, and some average ones. The price is under €450, so we're using a category analysis appropriate for this price range:

1. It's very well finished, with a special mention for the PVD coating. After being worn for several weeks straight, there are no scratches. We'll see how it holds up in the long run, but the PVD coating is very reliable. It's then treated in a different way, with, among other things, a superb satin finish on the lugs, case, and bezel. This seems like a smart approach considering the watch's risk of impact damage.

2. The bracelet continues in the same vein as the case: it's very high-quality with a shiny "rice grain" mesh and two wider side links that are satin-polished, like the case. A beautiful continuity between the two makes the watch very visually appealing.

However, the folding clasp is rather stiff and not ideal.

3. The bezel rotates in both directions with sufficient resistance to prevent it from constantly moving, and the domed sapphire crystal gives the watch a unique identity compared to its two siblings with the same finish (gold and black).

4. The two crowns inspire confidence; the crown at 4 o'clock is screw-down and confirms its 180m (18 ATM) water resistance.

5. Finally, inside, there's a Seiko NH35 movement—in short, a solid component.

6. The lume works well (dial and bezel), but nothing more.

On the wrist, the watch is very well-balanced. The case is noticeable, although its 18 ATM water resistance is easily manageable thanks to the very supple strap that adjusts naturally to the wrist. The two crowns are imperceptible. It's a substantial watch, a bit flashy with its gold finish, but its visually technical aspect (it's a diving watch) compensates, ultimately making it suitable for any wrist. Personally, I'm not a big fan of the hands, and particularly the shape of the hour markers. The date is legible, but it would be better if it were the same color as the hour markers (orange background, black numerals, or gold numerals).

In short, and in conclusion, this watch isn't necessarily a primary collector's item; however, it's easy to mistake it for one, and you'll find yourself coming back to it regularly. This is both because of its confident construction and its design, which is both very classic and has a touch of whimsy. I wouldn't go diving with it, but why not swim with it without worry? 


a qualitative daily

It was love at first sight with its dial and color, especially the contrasting small seconds subdial. I didn't hesitate for a moment to find a watch retailer who had one in stock. It seems to have been a good intuition, as a few months later it was nominated for "Watch of the Year 2024" for under €500 (Frank without the C).

The guilloché dial, stunning for this price point, demonstrates Citizen's industrial expertise, as well as its commercial prowess. I think Tissot has adopted the same formula with the same success.

In use, it's incredibly comfortable with its very supple mesh bracelet. A special mention goes to the high-quality folding clasp (always in line with the price, of course). Two minor drawbacks:

1. The case attracts dirt/grease/etc., which requires frequent wiping. I should mention, I'm not a perfectionist, but it's quite noticeable here. 2. The crown is very difficult to operate: stiff and too small.

Aside from these two minor flaws, after more than a year, this watch remains one I really enjoy wearing. It's easy to wear and gives that rare feeling of getting much more than the price suggests.



impressive for the price

I often buy on impulse, and this orange and black T&R model was undoubtedly one of them! I bought this watch at the very beginning of Arpiem, through a Facebook ad, taking a chance on a micro-brand and startup. My opinion is therefore both enthusiastic and reserved, but I stand by it given the initial context of the watch brand.

Let's start with the good, even very good: The overall quality of the case and its finish gives a feeling of robustness, and the engraved case back is a very nice touch (I'm not interested in looking at a basic movement).

The design is sophisticated, with a compact case that also houses a "box within a box" with the dial's flip-up mechanism from 1 to 4 o'clock—I'll come back to that. The matte black bezel is understated: it's elegant.

The dial is also understated but very legible; the two complement each other perfectly. No date complication, which is just as it should be, keeping things simple. The playful design, with the open dial revealing the balance wheel, is just enough to give it a mechanical feel, and it shows. Special mention goes to the very high-quality leather strap, which echoes the dial's colors. The deployant clasp is of slightly lower quality. Overall, the watch is very attractive.

What's most striking about this model is the perceived quality relative to the very reasonable price I paid (under €400).

The second point is the quality of the design: balanced, understated, yet rich in details that are discovered daily, making this a watch you'll want to wear again and again. This was certainly the case for me; I frequently returned to it, and I continue to do so, often in good weather, but in different ways: with a t-shirt or rolled-up sleeves, it makes a statement and is always noticed by watch enthusiasts.

The less appealing part: as explained, the watch rotates 45° from 1 o'clock to 4 o'clock. The idea is nice, the brand specifying that it's to ensure the time is always aligned with the "pilot" while riding. Anyway…
It's a gimmick, but it does create a distinctive case with two nested boxes, like Russian dolls. Unfortunately, the locking mechanism jammed very quickly, and the crown, also based on a nested design, isn't very ergonomic because of this system.

Furthermore, the thinness of the hands is a real drawback. The idea of rectangular hands is a good one, and on this model, the lack of lume doesn't bother me (unlike some others). However, their slimness, and particularly the seconds hand, detracts from the overall visual balance. The more I wear it (though less regularly now), the more this problem bothers me.

In conclusion, this impulsive purchase, like buying candy, has become a watch I've worn regularly for over a year. It's the result of genuine work on a balanced and distinctive/original design, which is truly the watch's strength. Regarding the watch's robustness, I didn't expect anything more than what was invested in its construction. Nevertheless, it really does the job, even exceeding expectations, but paradoxically, all these quality elements highlight the watch's flaws (which are few but noticeable).

Today I wear it less because of these flaws, but it will remain an occasional summer watch when the occasion arises.

An endearing watch

A watch I bought simply because I found it beautiful and elegant.
The bracelet is unique, with its lugs integrated into the rubber strap. The 40mm case is beveled at the edges, making it slim and very comfortable to wear. It's my first pointer date, a true Oris signature, and features a red oscillating weight, also typical of Oris.

After 10 years and a bit of neglect for a daily watch (worn almost every day for at least 5-6 years), it sat unused in my collection.
The bezel had suffered some wear, which is noticeable when worn. Similarly, the bracelet is slightly torn, and replacing it is complicated.
Nevertheless, I had it serviced recently. It was just a simple service; nothing was broken, and the mechanism is working perfectly again. Only the crown is a little stiff when shifting from 1 to 3. The drift is truly minimal, impressive for a mechanism that remains a basic one (ORIS caliber 754, but behind the movement lies a simple Sellita SW200-1a). Finally, what struck me most at the time, as it was rare (today there are many), is the embossed dial reminiscent of the carbon fiber used for car bodies. It gives the dial, along with its hands, a beautiful depth. The cardinal numerals are the same typeface used by Mercedes for its gauges.

Ultimately, it's an endearing watch, one that has made its mark on history through ORIS's collaboration with the Mercedes F1 Williams team, resulting in a truly remarkable version, packed with horological details that make it a genuine collaboration, not just a rebadged edition.

It remains in my collection as one of the first watches that allowed me to reach the historic Swiss level of watchmaking with ORIS.

a beautiful, stylish watch

While dive watches are currently flooding the market (a bit too much for my liking), over 10 years ago I wanted to buy my first watch of this type without breaking the bank. That's how I came across Longines, somewhat by chance, but with the reputation that came with it, despite its less-than-ideal positioning at the time, given its history. The Hydro Conquest is a classic, and this one is a quartz (at the time, quartz and mechanical movements were identical, but the mechanical cost 50% more... I didn't see the point in upgrading).
In use, it's a very comfortable watch to wear, highly legible, and relatively discreet.
Regarding the steel bracelet and case, I must admit that it has developed a nice patina over time, more so than other watches in my collection from the same era. The polished central link, in particular, has aged beautifully. Finally, I particularly regret the loss of color (poor UV protection?) on the bezel, which was originally a deep blue (like the sea, yes, really!), matching the dial, and is now much lighter, to the point of being rather dull. Surprisingly, unlike the bracelet and case, the bezel has remained very crisp and scratch-free: you can't have everything. Today, a new Longines Ultra-Chron Heritage has caught my eye. Proof that I still have fond memories of the brand… even if it's not perfect.

Simple and effective

This Hamilton is one of my first automatic watches, purchased over 30 years ago. I wasn't particularly attached to watches, even though I already found them appealing and worthy of special attention, if only for the beauty of having the time on my wrist. I wore it every day for at least 15 years before I started building a larger collection and set it aside, almost forgetting about it.

During all that time, and until three years ago... It worked but was showing signs of wear and tear, even though it had never received any proper maintenance. When I explained this to my watchmaker, he advised me to send it directly to Hamilton's after-sales service, which I did through him. It came back with a new gasket and replacement pins and pushers. Two or three small parts of the mechanism were worn, but nothing serious. In short, I am giving my opinion on this watch, the photos of which show a new strap and folding clasp from the Bracelet workshop in Paris (very happy!), because it has never let me down, even though it has been through a lot and never broken down, despite a certain amount of neglect! 

Today, I'm getting back into chronographs and, all in all, this is a classic that has become the grandmother of my collection. You always have to respect your grandmother! With its new strap, it may well be back in service in 2026.

Citizen tsuyosa small seconds

This Tsuyosa Petite Seconde was a great surprise for me when it came out. A guilloché dial that catches the light, immediate comfort on the wrist, and an excellent power reserve. Citizen has significantly improved access to the crown in this version. All this for a quality/price ratio that commands respect. Citizen proves once again that you can combine style and pleasure without breaking the bank.
