German quality

In September 2024, I started scuba diving after a year of theoretical and practical training in a pool and in open water. I passed my first certification and felt I had to reward myself for this hard work, so I decided to acquire this exceptional dive suit, equipped with an integrated depth gauge. It's the same one Enzo wears in "The Big Blue," in an Eco Drive titanium version, tested several times on dives—a real deep-sea thrill!

A very nice finish for this superb Lip reissue of one of the brand's first dive watches, featuring a "true" GMT complication that I really love.

The crystal is magnificent and transports us back to the 60s. The downsides, for me, are that the vintage look doesn't quite classify it as a true dive watch; it's rather thick and not particularly dressy either.

But in my opinion, it also falls short because of these qualities; ultimately, it's caught between two worlds. I never know when to wear it—dressy? Sporty?

The surprising thing about Citizen is that first impressions are never the right ones. I own three of the brand's models, and it's the same thing every time:
J1 "What the hell is this thing?"
J2 "I want it right away."
J3 "No, sorry, I'm not selling it. No, even for the price of a Fifty Phatom, I'm too attached to it, and I can dive with it..."
This Aqualand is a special edition for its fortieth anniversary.
It's an exact reproduction (I haven't checked) of the watch worn by Enzo in The Big Blue in 1988; it was the first real wristwatch with an integrated electronic depth gauge.
Compared to the latest models on the market, the difference is only aesthetic, but what an aesthetic:
The crown, the four buttons, the hands (hour and second), and the depth gauge grid are gold. The case back is unique. The case is a black limited edition scuba tank, not the yellow one on other Promaster models. A nice yellow scuba tank-shaped keychain is also included. There's a strap extension for wearing it over a wetsuit: practical, simple, effective, and robust.
As for the rest, there's no change: I measured a diameter of 38.2 mm, 50.4 mm with the depth gauge, a height of 14.8 mm, and a lug-to-lug of 47.8 mm. It's very comfortable to wear; the depth gauge doesn't bother me at all. It's not that big, fits the wrist, and is so charismatic...
I haven't been able to use the depth gauge and its many functions yet, but the digital part has all the essential features for urban life: date, multiple alarms, chronograph, and... the time: it's actually very practical because the two time displays are, of course, separable, giving you a second time zone. Regarding its measured accuracy: the digital time is accurate in two months, and the hands show a one-second advance in two months. I recently heard a master watchmaker who repairs all brands and at both extreme price levels claim that the best quartz watches in the world are produced by Citizen.
Between luxury brands that produce diving watches that rarely dive below the bottom of the pool; classic divers with no function other than the time, and often much more expensive than the Aqualand; charmless digital watches; and dive computers that can't be imported above the surface, this Citizen model IS.
If I had to find a flaw, I looked, and I almost found it: I would have liked a light for the window, but I had forgotten that Citizen watches are equipped with blinding luminescence. I would love to see the JP2007-17W version shine in the night with its fully luminescent green dial. This anniversary model is the same price as the two non-limited versions. I own an equally charming Promaster Marine Eco-drive, but for just 100 euros more, we have a real war machine on our wrist.

The perfect compromise

Citizen / Analogue depth gauge over 70 meters, the big blue one is mine ;) / Eco drive, no battery change every 2 years / waterproof 200 meters, ideal for doing the dishes ;) / antimagnetic, goodbye X-men magneto :) / 6-month power reserve / ISO standard / depth alarm / water detector for automatic triggering when diving and for less than €500 at the time in stores.

The accessible Analog depth gauge

This is my very first Citizen. Until recently, I admit that this brand seemed a little obscure to me. In my mind, it was a distant name, without much resonance. And then, while reading an article, I discovered something I hadn't suspected: Citizen is an incredibly rich Japanese brand, with a fascinating past and an almost infinite range of watches.
That's when I rediscovered a model that had crossed my mind without ever really staying there: the Aqualand JP2000.

The design of this watch immediately captivated me. It's a true tool watch: robust, functional, with no frills. Its diving strap, the almost soft feel of the case, and especially the integrated onboard computer with a depth gauge located on the left side... All of this gives the watch a unique, technical, and masculine style. It's not just a beautiful object: it's a watch designed for diving, for adventure, for real-life conditions. And it's a real veteran—no pun intended. Produced continuously since the 1980s, the Aqualand JP2000 is a true living legend.
It quickly found its place in my collection. It's not a watch like any other. It exudes real personality, while remaining perfectly wearable for everyday use. Sure, it's a little chunky, but its diameter is contained, and the overall proportions are very balanced.
It achieves that rare balance between wrist presence and comfort. It's a watch that asserts itself, but doesn't try to overdo it.
Citizen has always been renowned for the quality of its watches, and this Aqualand is no exception. The luminiva is simply exceptional. The hands are also well-designed: a cathedral hour hand, an orange minute hand, and a second hand shaped like a speargun arrow. Yes, just that. And it's superb.
Even the caseback is worth a closer look: the technical markings, the brushed metal, the pin buckle... Everything exudes quality and attention to detail.
This Aqualand was a real revelation. Not only did it give me a new perspective on Citizen, but it also made me want to discover other models in the Promaster range. It combines heritage, technical prowess, and originality.
I wear it with its original strap as well as with a NATO strap or an aged leather strap.
It's an endearing, effective, and decidedly different watch. Quite simply, a gem.
